Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa was born on a Sunday, 28 March, 1936 in the city of Arequipa

(Peru). He is a Peruvian writer and politician who has also had Spanish nationality since 1993.
Considered one of the most important contemporary novelists and essayists, his works have
garnered numerous awards, including the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature.

As a writer, he rose to fame in the 1960s with such novels as The City and the Dogs (1962), The
Green House (1965), and Conversation at the Cathedral (1969). He went on to write prolifically in
various literary genres, including literary criticism and journalism. His books include plays, crime
novels, history and politics. Several of his novels, such as Pantaleón y las visitaras (1973) and La
fiesta del Chivo (2000), have been adapted and taken to the cinema.

Many of Vargas Llosa's works are influenced by the writer's perception of Peruvian society and by
his own experiences as a Peruvian; however, it has increasingly dealt with issues from other parts
of the world.

Since he began his literary career in 1958, he has lived in Europe (between Spain, Great Britain,
Switzerland and France) most of the time, so that a certain European influence is also perceived in
his work.

Como escritor, alcanzó la fama en la década de 1960 con novelas como La ciudad y los perros
(1962), La casa verde (1965) y Conversación en La Catedral (1969). Continuó escribiendo
prolíficamente en varios géneros literarios, incluyendo la crítica literaria y el periodismo. Entre sus
libros se encuentran obras de teatro, novelas policiacas, históricas y políticas. Varias de sus
novelas, como Pantaleón y las visitadoras (1973) y La fiesta del Chivo (2000), han sido adaptadas y
llevadas al cine.

Muchas de las obras de Vargas Llosa están influidas por la percepción del escritor sobre la
sociedad peruana y por sus propias experiencias como peruano; sin embargo, de forma creciente
ha tratado temas de otras partes del mundo.

Desde que inició su carrera literaria en 1958 reside en Europa (entre España, Gran Bretaña, Suiza
y Francia) la mayor parte del tiempo, de modo que en su obra se percibe también una cierta
influencia europea.
