The Communication Server 1000E (CS 1000E) product is an IP-based
communications system that lets customers distribute a large number of
telephony users throughout their QoS-managed IP network, controlled by a
Call Server.
The CS 1000E is a highly scalable and robust IP PBX that offers support of IPbased
applications using industry-standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
and H.323 protocols, while providing an industry-leading set of telephony
features and applications. The system supports a wide range of IP telephony
devices, such as IP Phones, Media Gateways, and soft clients for desktop,
tablet, and PDA devices.
With the CS 1000E, customers can evolve from a traditional TDM network to
a converged IP network. Deployment is seamless because the CS 1000E
integrates with existing PBX systems from Nortel and third parties, which lets
customers expand the size and functionality of their networks while preserving
their investment in other Nortel equipment, such as Nortel Meridian 1 PBX,
and Communication Server 1000 systems.

With CS 1000 5.0, the CS 1000E can be equipped with either a Common

The CS 1000E lets customers deploy a full IP PBX architecture that supports
up to 22,500 IP Phones, either at a single location or distributed through a
QoS-managed IP network. To support a large number of IP Phones, you can
network a CS 1000E system with other CS 1000E systems over the IP network.
A typical CS 1000E solution is comprised of CS 1000E Call Servers and
Media Gateway 1000E¶s.
c c
A minimum of one CS 1000E Call Server is required to control call processing
and telephony services and to provide various 10/100/1000 BaseT Ethernet
interfaces. The Call Server also provides the system memory required to store
operating software and customer data. The Call Server is available with a
Common Processor Pentium Mobile (CP PM) or CP PIV-based Call Processor.

c c!c
CS 1000E CP PM Call Servers have a circuit card, slot-based architecture.
This allows for a CS 1000E product with only a single MG 1000E chassis. It
uses the CP PM card configured as a Call Server (CP PM CS) for processing
calls.
c cc c
CS 1000E CP PIV Core Call Servers are rack-mounted. Each CP PIV Call
Server contains a CP PIV Call Processor card and a System Utility card.

intervention can cause control of call processing to switch from one
CPU to the other using a Graceful Switchover, leaving all call
processing states intact.
‡ Signaling Server software, including SIP Gateway, H.323 Gateway, and IP
Phone software:
² If the master (Leader) Signaling Server is unavailable, a Follower
Signaling Server becomes the IP Telephony node master.
² Signaling Servers share set registrations (load-sharing).
‡ H.323 Gatekeeper:
² If the Primary Gatekeeper is unavailable, an Alternate Gatekeeper can
be configured (automatic database synchronization).

² If the Primary and Alternate Gatekeeper are unavailable, a Failsafe

Gatekeeper can be configured (for each Signaling Server).
‡ H.323 Gateway interface to Gatekeeper:
² If the Leader Signaling Server fails, a follower Signaling Server
becomes the H.323 Gateway.
