PERSONAL STATEMENT

I've always loved storytelling. I've devoured film my whole life.


The margins of my school books were always lined with character
sketches and I created all sorts of short animations. I love to see a
narrative unfold and a story come to life. So naturally, I chose to
do a Bachelor of Film and Television at Swinburne.

I was often told during my time at Swinburne that my approach


to storytelling was very visual, very graphic. Half of my first 90
second film consisted of animated credits and the core
storytelling device in my first documentary was animated text. As
I went through the course, I realised that I loved the Art
Direction, Title Design and the Story Boarding process as much
as making the film itself.

I graduated in 2008 and have worked freelance in the film


industry in a wide variety of projects including: music videos,
educational and promotional videos and online content. More
and more I've been drawn towards design and problem solving.
I'm really excited that the Graduate Diploma of Graphic Design
offers the opportunity to broaden my skill base and work in an
interdisciplinary environment.

ART DIRECTION Zoop! the story of four friends who accidentally

ZOOP!
stumble into a parallel dimension, is the largest Art
Direction project that I have undertaken. It involved
the creation of two major sets. The first being a 20m
long hallway consisting of 10 identical flats. The
hallway was built with a curve to create the illusion
that the hallway was infinate.

After the hallway was built it was dressed with five


alternating sets of props. This was done to create
the affect of different areas in the infinite hallway
universe.

ART DIRECTION
ZOOP!
The second of the two sets was dubbed
the “brainroom”. It was a cross between
a hippy’s lounge room and mad
scientist’s lair.

As well as painting and texturing the


four flats that made up the set, the
brainroom had a working video wall and
control panel.

The two sets were shot in different


studios. It was necessary to partially
build the brainroom set on the hallway
set and visa versa to give the affect that
the sets were connected.

TITLE DESIGN
One of my favourite parts of film
making is title design. Good title
design not only sets the tone for the
film but also adds levels of meaning.

The title design for ZOOP! was a


challenge. ZOOP! has predominantly
science fiction themes. The aesthetic
of the first half of the film is that of
a comedy or drama. The opening
credits were used to introduce the
science fiction elements of the film to
the audience at an early stage.

These are a series of stills from
my first 90 second film, Love:

The film was a exploration of
the happiness and enevitable
sadness that comes with falling
in love. I used black and white
to represent this. The title is
never compleatly visible. The
black and the white are both
needed to complete the full
picture.

STORY BOARDS
Storyboarding is an extension of the writing
process. It gives you the opportunity
resolve potential problems before the
shoot. For heavily stylised projects like,
Edna Webb’s Music Box, storyboarding
allowed me to fine tune the aesthetic of the
film and experiment with different visual
ideas.

I cut the music and narration with the
storyboards to create a full-length animatic.
I did this to set the tone and pace for
the actors and crew and to minimise the
amount of film needed for the shoot.

The story boards for ZOOP! were very


important. They were used to determan
how much of the set would need to be
built, the lighting requirements, as well as
the types of lenses that would be used.

TYPO PROJECT
The typo project was a self initiated logo
and branding project. I undertook it to
refine my design and software skills.

Typo is a stationary and “concept” store


that is a branch of Cotton On. It is a
relatively new company with stores across
Australia.

Typo Mission statement: Typo is a one stop


concept store with irresistible products
to fill your space with confidence. Taking
trends from the fashion industry and
applying them to notebooks, decal wall art,
gift wrap and other specialty items, Typo
offers product with attitude… Typo is fast
and affordable.

After analysing Typo’s mission it with vintage ornamental lettering.

rebellious art I experimented
by incorporating street
art into the design. I knew
I didn’t want the logo to
reference street art directly, I
felt that would come across
as disingenuous. Instead
I wanted to capture the
dangerous and rebellious
spirit of street art.

This is how I came across


the idea of vandalising
the logo. By allowing the
customer to vandalise the
logo it keeps the logo fresh
and unique. It captures the
spirit of street art without
plagiarising its aesthetic.

CLOSING STATEMENT

I hope this folio has given you an insight into my interests and
approach to design. Although most of the work is film based
I feel that the methods I use are heavily influenced by design.
Through this course I aim to further develop and refine my skills
and continue to marry the two disciplines. I am excited about the
opportunity to deepen my understanding of design and broaden
my abilities.
