Dawson JV Baseball
The bases are loaded. It’s all up to the
pitcher now. If he throws the ball just
right, he’ll be able to get the last batter
out and win the game. The score now is
7-3, Dawson is in the lead. It’s the last
game of the season. The last Wortham
batter swings, and misses. “Strike one!”
calls the umpire. He swings at the ball
again, and misses. “Strike two!” called
the umpire. The pitcher takes a deep
breath. He cranks his arm back and
throws the ball. the batter swings, but
he’s just a tad late! “Strike three,
batter’s out!” the umpire yelled.
Dawson wins! After losing to Wortham
last time, Dawson pulled through! “We
played really well, especially since
Wortham has a really good J.V. team.
Another plus was it was the last game
of the year. It was a great way to finish
the season,” J.V. Baseball Coach, Gary
Kay boasted about his astounding team.

Dawson Softball

Tuesday April 19, 2011, at Hubbard,
the Dawson High School Softball
team took a loss to the Hubbard
Jaguars for the last district game of
the season. Dawson Bulldogʼs
coach, Jordan Revill,added this,
“The game was bad, we werenʼt in
focus. We should have done
better.”
Many players,including
the coaches, thought the team
didnʼt play to their full potential.
Some players thought they werenʼt
paying enough attention and that
they shouldʼve done a lot better.

gave me their best moments in
softball. Haylee said,”playing hot
potato with our softball and gloves
(my group won)”, was her favorite
memory. Hannah said,”Hitting my
home run against Teague, it might
of messed up my batting for the
rest of the season,but it felt great.”

Dawson High School Varsity Baseball made
it to the playoffs once again. Dawson’s
Varsity Baseball’s first playoff series against
Avalon was a sweeping victory. Dawson took
the first game 25-2 and the second 16-0.
Going into playoffs Dawson’s Alex Shaw,
who had the best batting average, said it
didn’t matter where or who they played they
were ready. In the second round of playoffs
Dawson faced number two in the state
Blueridge. The series was played in Forney
with Dawson falling short in game one
Friday the 13th 16-0 and then losing game
two Saturday 14-2. Coach Somwang said,”
The season was good we ended 18-7. I saw
good thinks for next year. For the seniors,
good luck. And the for the returners the
season never ends continue to work and get
ready for next year.”

 The  Navarro  County  Youth  Expo   division),  Trisha  Siddons  3rd  place

Hudson  and  Faith  Holt.  This  event   her  cake  (senior  division),  Payton  
took  place  on  March  21st  in  the   Woodall  4th  place  with  canned

Dawson  did  very  well  over  all.   Alaina  Pearson  1st  place  with  her

Senior Graduation
Graduation comes around every year, but what makes this year
special? We had a chance to interview some of the Seniors and they
all had something to say. Josey Kelley’s advice for everyone in Jr.
high and high school was, “Everything counts and everything
matters.” Trey Tennison replied, “Stay on your grades and maintain
a good attitude.” When Alex Shaw was asked what he wanted to do
in college he just smiled and answered, “I plan to play football for
the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.” Brittney Jayroe said her
plans for the future are too, “Study biology.”
Dawson high school graduation will be held on Friday, June
3rd, at Ed Mitchell Field. The ceremony starts at 8:00 P.M. The
Senior sponsors are Ms. Woodard, Ms. Lindsey, Mrs. Biggie,
Coach Samwang, and Mrs. Murray. Mrs. Gibbs our high school
principal, and Mrs. Barton our counselor, have guided and advised
this Senior class to achieve their graduation requirements.
Some of the Seniors were asked what they would’ve done
differently, several responded that they would have payed more
attention to their grades and class work. Nick Renfro stated that
graduation would be bitter sweet for him. Lee Demmings
responded that he would miss everyone in his class and hopes to
hang out sometime after they all go their separate ways. The class
of 2011 has been together through thick and thin. They will be
missed and we wish them the best of luck in the future.

Mrs. Hulin-White was interviewed about
the exhilarating graduation of our
magnificent 8th graders. But what exactly
goes on at a graduation, you may ask ?
Mrs. Hulin-White responded with “A
Ceremony to recognize TAKS
accomplishments, and proceeding to high
school. Also, the 8th grade Valedictorian
speech, following with the honoring of

The 2011 Derrick Days

As always Derrick Days was held in Corsicana,Texas . The people who sponsored it this year were the
Haynie Oil Company. Derrick Days took place on April 28, 29, and 30. There were many cool and fun
events that took place such as the Crow Fish Cook Off, Chili Cook Off, Horse Shoes, Three on Three
Basketball, Strong Man Competition, and many others. The reason for Derrick Days was the Celebration of
the oil boom in Corsicana when it used to be a Oil City.Last year the estimated attendance for Derrick Days

     Local Music

The local music group, “Beastmode,” has been astoundingly successful this year.
Everything from starting band fresh, to rocking the House of Blues, this band is close to
perfect. Leading the band is Ty Skinner, an outgoing ninth grade Dawson student. Also
making up the band is Josh Burleson, Arthur DeVatalis, Luke Woodall, Josh Skinner, and
Brandon Cehand as the manager. Ty said he started the band to, “succeed in the music
industy and sell many albums.” This amazing band has performed at the House of Blues in
Dallas twice, the 2011 Derrick Days, and also plan on taking the stage and dominating the
crowd at other local venues. “It’s very entertaining and rewarding,” Ty boasts of the band. I
soon learned after talking to several of the band members, that the boys are very quick to
speak highly of each other. When asked how hard it was to start and keep the band going,
he replied, “moderate, but hard to get going for awhile. “ The talent spread throughout this
group of young musicians is nothing short of extraordinary. Local fans who have heard
“Beastmode” never lack positive compliments, as they speak almost breathless about the
outstanding group. When asked where he hopes to perform live in the future, he replied
with a smile and certainly no lack of confidence, “Super Bowl!” “Beastmode” has huge
goals and outstanding dreams, and with the talent, heart, and optimistic attitudes, nothing
can stop this small town band!

Local Dawson art teachers, Miss
Sammon and Miss Woodard, are
hosting their yearly Navarro
County Art Competition. You must
be an FFA member in order to
enter. The competition will be held
in two different places. The Heart
of Texas Fair, or the Navarro Youth
Expo. The classes that will be
judged this year are photography,
drawing, and painting. The
competition is occurring during the
Youth Expo. All kids are able to
enter the art competition. Judges
are picking this years winners for
the art competition by what you
decide to enter. All students should
have the privilege to enter in this
year.
Prom

The theme for Prom this year
is Hollywood. This special occasion
will be located at Barons on fifth in
Waco on May 21st. The Prom
sponsors are Mrs. Sammon, Mr.
Litrell, Mrs. Kirkland, and Coach
Revel. They raised money for Prom
by the students paying $2.00 a month
for class dues, had two dinners, a
concession stand, and donkey
basketball. It cost $8.00 per person or
$15.00 per couple to get a ticket. So
come on out.

has Field Day. This fun day is on
May 19th and 20th. Kids in pre-k

Dawson At State Tennis Meet

Dawson made it once again to the state tennis meet.
It’s been 30 years since Anna Sanders made it as a
player but this time she acted as the coach for Dawson.
Steven Travis, Nathan Blair and Tyler Frazee are star
players of the team this year. These players have been
working hard all season. Tyler was eliminated at the
Regional Meet making it to state as an alternate while
Steven and Nathan advanced to the state meet. The
final game was against Poolville; scores were 2-6, 6-3,
3-6. “Although we did not win I’m very proud of the
players,” said Mrs. Sanders. She is looking forward to
the future tennis teams.
Dawson High School Track

The varsity high school track team did outstanding.
Some of the girls placed through fourth in all their
event they did, and that was the highest they could
get in district. Brittany Coleman placed fourth in
triple jump, Jasmine placed First in long jump,
Brittany Carr placed fourth in discus, Jasmine parks
placed fourth in the 100 m run.They all competed in
district including Haylee Kimbriel, Raven Blair,
Jackie Sigler. They didn't make it to area but they all
did amazingly. Jasmine parks competed in area on
April 13th, 2011, in Fairfield. From what the
reporter hears, district went very well because more
girls advanced to district this year than last year. In
order for them to make it to district they had to
place in the top four. Jasmine parks is the only one
to make it to Regionals. There are NO odds in
competing in Regionals. Their biggest competition
in Regionals was Era and Oakwood.
Spring Football

Dawson High School’s football team is going
to lose key players such as Kirk Williams, Alex
Shaw, Trey Tennison, Michael Passinni, Lee
Demmings, Michael Vaughn, Steven Travis and
many more. They start August 2nd practicing
from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Off season
will train hard and play harder.The coaches
think Brandon Cehand the young freshman
will have to step his game up next year. All
in all the coaches have a positive outlook
for next year.
