Summary
‘The presence of depressive symptoms in patients. with
schizophrenia has been recognized and described reitere-
tively, even though ts significance on the Ueatment and
outcome ofthis disorder is stil ignored. The sympioms which
fare present in a major depressive episode are not exclusive of
‘pression and may be confused with the negative symptoms
of schizophrenia, vg, apathy, anhedonia, and abulia, or wth
the parkinsonian effects of antipsychotics such as akinesia,
During the last few years attention has been gwen to the
study and treatment of depression in schizophrenia, thus an
appropriate clnimerrcal instrument is needed. Addington et al
Gesigned a scale to asses depressive symptoms in schzo-
jhreric patients. The behavior of such intrumert in English is
Saiisfacory, therefore, tis advaisable to transiate the
instrument and assess the Spanish version
We studied 103 patients with the diagnosis of schizophve
nia (OSMAILR), in fwo thi level hospitals, who were under
{teatment with ‘antipsychotics. The patients were assessed
with the Caigary Seale for Depression in Schizophrenia, the
Beck Depression Inventory (BO!) and the Oittascio Seale for
Extrapyramidal Symptoms, besides, 50 % of te patienls were
also assessed with the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale
for Schizophrenia (PANS), and the remaining 50% was
‘evaluated with the Calgary Scale in two diffrent days of the
same week, by two independent investgators. A significant
Correlation was observad (r = 0.72. p < 0.0001) between the
total scores of the Calgary Scale and the BOI. Neither the
Correlation between the Calgary scores and the DiMtascio
Scale, nor the negative subscale of the PANS were signi
cant. The cortelation between the scores of the Calgay Scale
fof the subgroup that was evaluated twice weekly was good (¢
0.60, p< 0.0001). Our findings indicate that the Calgary
‘Seale to evaluate depression in schizophrenia has a saisfac-
tory concurrent validty with the BDI, and is reproducibly is
‘9006. Being able to rely on this instrument wil ease the study
fof the relationship between depressive symptoms and
schizophrenia,
