Helping Hands helping out
■ Food pantry to open
during the week for clients
Helping Hands is pleased to announce
that it will begin opening once per month
during evening hours to accommodate
the needs of clients who are unable to
access the food pantry during its regular
business hours of Monday, Wednesday &
Thursday from 10am to 2pm.
Beginning on Thursday, June 2nd, and
continuing on the first Thursday of each
month, Helping Hands will be open from
6pm to 8pm to serve the needs of clients
who may not be able to come during the
daytime hours.
The number of clients that Help-
ing Hands serves continues to increase
as there continues to be more and more
needs within the community. The expan-
sion of service for Helping Hands is part
of the future vision for the outreach min-
istry.
Helping Hands is also involved with
a community garden project that will be
coordinated on the grounds of Heritage
United Methodist Church this year. This
is an exciting way for those who have re-
ceived the benefits of Helping Hands to be
able to participate and get involved. For

Helping Hands also continues to look
forward to its Miracle Sunday Service at
Ensley Park at 6pm on June 12th. This
will be a consolidated service of the area
churches designed to raise funds for the
new facility. Recently, demolition and
clearing of the old motel on the site, just
south of the VFW Hall, was completed by
Dean’s Excavating as Helping Hands pre-
pares the site for new construction.
The faithful support of the commu-
nity for the operations and future vision
of Helping Hands continues to be greatly
appreciated by all those involved with the
Helping Hands ministry outreach.

Sheriff’s JAZZ BAND PERFORMANCE

Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office
deputies responded to a two-vehicle
head on accident in Home Town-
ship early Saturday morning, which
injured five people.
Investigation reveals that Da-
vid Withey, along with 14-year-old
Tristen Withey and 10-year-old
Brice Withey, were traveling South
on Deja Road in their 2003 pickup
when a 1998 Chevy Blazer driven by
18-year-old BreAnn Metcalf from
Weidman, crossed into the oncom-
ing lane striking Withey’s vehicle
head on.
Withey and his sons were in-
jured and transported to the Gratiot
Community Hospital by Montcalm
County Emergency Medical Services
for their injuries. Metcalf was trans-
ported to Gratiot Community Hos-
pital by Montcalm County Emer-
gency Medical Services where she

was later flown to Saginaw Hospital
by Flightcare to be treated for criti-
cal injuries. Metcalf’s passenger, 19-
year-old Kristin Wernette, from Re-
mus was injured and transported by
Aeromed from the scene to a Hospi-
tal in Grand Rapids.
Investigation reveals David
Withey and his sons were all wear-
ing seat belts at the time of the crash,
however, neither Metcalf nor her
passenger were wearing seat belts.
Deputies were assisted at the
scene by Home and Day Fire De-
partments.
This crash remains under inves-
tigation and deputies continue to
determine whether drugs or alcohol
were a factor in the crash.
The Newaygo High School Jazz Band
participated in the 8th Annual Jazz Fes-
tival in Hastings on April 16th. The stu-
dents performed at the Hastings City Bank
in the morning and visited other venues
throughout the town to enjoy the music
of other local area high school jazz bands.
On Saturday alone, there were over twenty
participating high school jazz bands and
semi professional bands performing.
The Newaygo Band, under the direc-
tion of Daniel Barnett, performed for Cli-
nician Brian Coyle, were provided com-
ments to enhance their playing skills.
Brian Coyle is currently Associate Profes-
sor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies
at Hope College. Brian has performed with
Al Jarreau, Marcus Roberts, Gene Bert-
oncini, Roberta Flack, Melissa Manches-
ter, the New Buddy Rich Band, Jermaine
Jackson, Bobby Shew, Marvin Stamm,
Gary Foster, the O’Jays, Pia Zadora, Eric
Reed, Ravi Coltrane, Jeffrey Osborne, Su-
san Anton, Mac Davis, Chris Vadala and
Lorrie Morgan, among others. He is the
author of numerous New Music Reviews
for the Jazz Educators Journal, serves on
the Resource Team and is chairman of
the New Music Committee for the Inter-
national Association of Jazz Educators.
Brian is an active performer, composer,
arranger, adjudicator and clinician who
frequently appears at festivals, universi-
ties, colleges, high schools and clubs both
regionally and nationally. He is a member
of the Jazz Faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts
Camp, where he directs big bands, teaches
improvisation and performs in the Blue
Lake Monster.
The students ended the evening lis-
tening to and enjoying the sounds of the
Instrumental Headliner Concert featur-
ing the WMU Jazz Orchestra. This concert
was opened by performances from the
Middle School and High School All Star
Bands. Newaygo Senior, Megan Garvin
was a member of the High School All Star

Springs fall classes at MCC

Popular local playwright Scott Phillips has written his
sixth production, “Devil May Care,” and it will debut at
the Kent Theatre in Cedar Springs. In this musical com-
edy, a missionary destined for Heaven and a politician
bound for Hell arrive together at the Pearly Gates. But
a mix-up causes them to change places and havoc en-
sues in the unearthly realms. This engaging show ranges
from hilarious to poignant as the new arrivals discover
their eternal rewards and punishments.
This is the second musical that Phillips has written
with his sister, professional musician Jill Phillips, who
composed the words and music.
Performances will be May 20th, 21st, 27th, and 28th
at 7:30 p.m. and May 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at the Historic
Kent Theatre, 8 N. Main Street Cedar Springs, MI. Tick-
ets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. For those un-
der 18 years of age, tickets are $6 for all shows. Tick-

State Band and
Orchestra Festival
On Wednesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 5 the Tri
County High School and Eighth Grade bands traveled
to Reeths Puffer High School to attend the Michigan
School Band and Orchestra Association’s State Band
and Orchestra Festival.
Bands must play a march, a piece from a required list
and a selected number. Festival participants are judged
on the three concert numbers in the area of tone qual-
ity, intonation, rhythm, technique and interpretation by
a panel of three judges. They also must sight-read two
pieces for a fourth judge, and these grades are then aver-
aged together for a final rating.
Both the High School Band and the Eighth Grade
band received First Division Ratings. Congratulations

TO THE EDITOR:
I would like to say, I read your newspaper
every week to keep up on community events.
So when I saw the full page ad on Our Varsity
Basketball players becoming District Cham-
pions, it made me proud. It also made me
start to wonder why there is such disparity
between sports.
The basketball team achieved a great ac-
complishment by becoming District Cham-
pions and was acknowledged, rightfully
so. My question would be when the Varsity
Wrestlers attained the same accomplish-
ment, by winning their District Champi-
onship on 2/10/2011, there was no such
acknowledgment in the paper. It even goes
so far as the day after the Varsity Wrestlers
winning Districts, there was no mention of
it in the morning announcements, but it was
announced of a loss by the J.V. basketball
team. These wrestlers have had some great
achievements. We have a couple of wrestlers
with 100 plus wins in their careers. We also
have freshmen wrestlers with winning re-
cords they can be proud of. Our wrestlers go
out week after week and do their job’s one on
one, man against man, this is why I feel they
deserve the same acknowledgment when
earned.
As a proud sponsor of all athletes who
give their all on the mat, the court, the field, I
believe they should be treated equally. These
are our children and grandchildren, trying
to make our District and Community proud,
so I would hope in the future our wrestlers
would get the acknowledgement that they
also rightfully deserve.

Randy Fisher’s legacy lives on for Tri County students with a new scholarship formed and funded in his
honor by family, friends, and the community.
The Randall L. Fisher Scholarship was established to assist a Tri County senior in their pursuit of post-
secondary education. A Tri County math teacher for 34 years, Mr. Fisher valued education and passed on that The high school counseling office
love for learning to his students. He inspired students to work harder, set higher goals, and helped them on their would like to recognize the following
way to accomplishing them. He supported students by attending many sporting events, band performances, and students for earning Student of the Month
other school activities. He was also a driver’s education instructor, class advisor, softball coach, and a mentor for at Kent Career Technical Center:
new teachers. He is remembered by his students for his boundless energy, sense of humor, life lessons and quotes,
and willingness to be available for extra help in their math studies. John Adams (12th)
Even after retirement, Mr. Fisher continued to teach calculus for Montcalm Community College (MCC) at Engineering/Site Design Program
the Panhandle Area Center in Howard City.

performed the play, “Two Bear Cubs,” a Miwok myth, for the other third grade classes
at MacNaughton Elementary. They practiced for weeks during their RTI time, using
the new Elmo and digital projector for their lines. They did a great job!

For the last two months at Edgerton Upper Elementary, students have been investing
some of their personal time outside of school creating posters that represented “Respect”
in March and “Fairness“ in April. It was set up as the Edgerton Art Prize for Character.
Since April was the month of “Fairness” all the students who took their personal time
to create a poster received a token prize. In May, the focus will be on “Citizenship” and
students will be doing something school wide in recognition of this. The students really
displayed some creativity in their artwork, mixing themes and colors.

middle school for an assembly at 1 p.m. Public is

The May 20 evening rally is open to the
public and is held at the Tri County High School
Gym at 6 p.m. The evening rally will include a
mini-survivor event, live music, and Mike Skupin
sharing. The event is free.

Applications are now available for the 2011- 2012 school year. The Tri County
Preschool program is grant funded and is offered FREE for students who meet
eligibility requirements. To be eligible, a family must be identified as having two
“risk-factors.” These risk factors are determined based on the state Great Start
Readiness Program criteria. Families who have children that are four years old or
will turn four years old by December 1, 2011 are welcome to apply. Applications are
available at MacNaughton Elementary, Sand Lake Elementary, and the Tri County
Administrative Office. Applications will be accepted anytime since enrollment is
determined on eligibility factors, however, priority of session time will be given to

The Tri County Jr. Basketball Camp for boys and girls entering 3rd
through 8th grade will be held June 13 through the 16 from 9 a.m. to
12 p.m. The cost is $20 and it includes lunch and a basketball.

Kent District Library is pleased to present two Michigan authors from
this year’s list of Michigan Notable Books. Adam Schuitema, author
of Freshwater Boys, will visit KDL’s Byron Township branch at 6:30 pm on
Thursday, May 19. Freshwater Boys is a collection of eleven short stories set in
and around the Great Lakes of Michigan. Gordon Olson, editor of A Michigan
Polar Bear Confronts the Bolsheviks: A War Memoir, will speak at KDL’s Sand
Lake branch at 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 21. This book tells the graphic story
of a young Michigan soldier’s experiences during President Woodrow Wilson’s
ill-fated 1918 military expedition against the Bolsheviks in the frozen reaches

Gardeners and readers will be delighted as the Friends of the Library
“grows” minds this June and welcomes your plants for the 7th Annual
“Awesome” Plant Sale & Auction at the KDL Sand Lake/Nelson Township
Library. Donated plants are very important to this event. This is a great time to
divide plants from your own garden or just make some room. Re-home them
and help the library! Please pot your plants and label them with the common
name, light requirements, height and bloom color. (Pots are available at the
library.) Potted plants may be dropped off at the Library June 1 st through
June 9th. Plants will be inspected by the USDA and due to state inspection
requirements, will not be accepted after June 9. Local businesses, community
residents and friends generously provide all the plants and items for the event.
Last year, over 2,000 plants were donated, including perennials, annuals,
herbs, flowers, trees, shrubs and more. The sale is from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
and an oral auction will begin at 2:00 p.m. The event is at the Library, 88
Eighth Street, Sand Lake (rain or shine) and all proceeds benefit the Library to
meet the “growing” needs for youth and adult programs, books, and resources.

It is a strange, confusing, and terrifying world in which live. Natural
disasters have devastated lives and lands both far away and close to

our compass in this uncertain world? On the one hand, some say

other supposed expert on Christianity says that Jesus is coming back
to judge the world this very May 21st! Mark the date! You can count
on it or so he says. What are we really to think?
Settling ourselves in our uncertain times cannot be found in fol-
lowing the latest fad or popular personality, but through the certain
hope of the Scriptures. Pastor Brian Humphreys will address many of
the controversies of our day from the Bible at First Baptist Church of
Howard City. In the Sunday morning service, our current series is:
“Jesus, the Devil, Heaven, and Hell.”

I recently was introduced to the idea of Viruses of the Mind by Wayne Dyer’s new book, “Excuses Begone”. In this book Dyer

to you, read the healing affirmation or create your own. Then every single time you hear the old meme in
your mind or from you mouth, cancel it, and plug in the new one. Within a short time you will be thinking
