Lent 2011 – “Eyes Wide Open”
The season of Lent is an important time in the life of all Christians. It is a time for deep-
ening our faith through worship, study, prayer, contemplation and sacrificial service.
Our theme for Lent 2011 is “Eyes Wide Open”. We will look at our spiritual blindness
and explore ways we can allow Christ to open our eyes to see Him, ourselves, our neighbors
and our world through the lens of Christ’s love.
See below the special events and services which will help us grow during this season of
Lent. Please read the scriptures listed to prepare for each worship service.

PORT Homeless shelter concluded this week! Thank you to all volunteers, members of the
church and partner churches for helping to make this a great week. We fed an average of 70
guests per night and sent guests on their way each morning with lunch. On the last day of the
ministry we passed out hygiene kits to help throughout the summer months when shelters such
as this are no longer available. Pictures below are of the youth making hygiene kits and
lunches for out PORT guests. Thank you all! Please continue to keep this ministry in your
prayers.

The Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center's 2011 Banquet and Benefit Auction will be on

seling and consulting in a faith context.

place issues and other concerns. PPCC treats adults, adolescents and children and works
within the financial means of its clients. The Counseling Center hopes to help people to be
more at peace with themselves and with each other. In times of stress and in times of growth,
feel free to call PPCC at 873-2273.

Thank you to PODS for your help and support in the renovation project currently being done
by Denbigh Presbyterian Church. The use of the POD storage unit, free of charge, during this
project is a great help. Sincerely,

HOME RENOVATION PROGRESS REPORT – MARCH 16, 2011 6

Our God continues to supply us with opportunities to serve. The renovation of the home in
the Denbigh community is moving along slowly but steadily. A new hot water heater was in-
stalled in February 2010 but it was not until the fall of 2010 that it was decided to move forward
with an extensive renovation of the entire home. Due to the cold weather of December, January
and early February many tasks could not be carried out and so there was slow progress during that
time period. This worked out well since it provided time to source the huge variety and quantity
of materials needed.
During those recent cold months some work was carried out inside the unit such as replac-
ing a toilet and other plumbing issues. A friend of the church gave a dishwasher and it was in-
stalled. Three interior doors were hung and some electrical problems were resolved. Three clos-
ets were framed out and the subfloor in one bathroom was replaced.
Many things began to happen around mid-February. An anonymous donor provided a heat
pump system and it, along with new ducting, was installed by Tommy Garner Air-conditioning
and Heating. Mr. Garner also provided a bathroom cabinet complete with sink, faucet and drain
and several vinyl windows. The windows are in place now and are making a huge difference in
comfort and reduced heating bills for the family.
Gault Electric LLC provided and installed a new electrical panel with circuit breakers to
handle the heat pump and resolve some improper wiring in the old panel. The Elmer Back Gifting
Center supplied a new vacuum cleaner and a cabinet for the second bathroom. This cabinet was
without a countertop so Brunk Tile and Interiors gave the necessary materials to build a tile coun-
tertop. Sherwin-Williams Newport News-Denbigh has given paint and the family has painted the
ceilings throughout the home. We anticipate they will be giving more too! A number of individu-
als have donated various materials such as doors, faucets, plumbing supplies, wood trim and furni-
ture. Storage problems were resolved when we acquired a storage unit from PODS and it certainly
has been put to good use.
It has been absolutely amazing how God has been involved in this effort. From the outset it
was obvious that there was no way our church could come up with the funds for this multi-
thousand dollar project. But God has stepped in. He has brought many caring individuals to come
forward with donations of materials and funds. Just today I learned of someone who will supply
the remaining six windows and may have a lead on the vinyl siding! Our God is indeed an awe-
some God!
There is still much work ahead. Two exterior doors will be replaced as well as the six re-
maining windows. The whole house will be stripped of its siding and replaced with new siding.
Most of the wood paneling will be taken down and new paneling put in its place with insulation
added in the exterior walls where necessary. Then wood trim goes in to supply the finishing touch
to the walls. Flooring throughout the entire unit will finish up the inside. Last of all will be the
replacement of the underpinning and badly deteriorated wood deck.
The active workers so far include Jay Dunn, Bev Daniels, Franz Thiessen, Bob Murphy,
Keith Pennell, Jan Spruill and Blair Gloss. If you would like to join the effort please contact Keith
Pennell at 877-3119. The team also welcomes monetary donations to the cause. They may be
designated to Home Renovation.
The last point to address is money spent. The expenditures so far total $723. These funds
came from fund raising (the Denbigh Doers and the dessert auction), donations of members and
friends of DPC and the Outreach Committee budget.

One Great Hour of Sharing: All around us we see needs resulting from natural
disasters, poverty and economic downturns. How can we hope to help so many
people who are in distress? As a church, we want to express God’s love to those
around us in practical ways, as well as to share the gospel of Christ. One Great
Hour of Sharing is the offering that enables us to reach out to those less fortunate
both in the U.S. and abroad. This offering supports aid though Presbyterian or-
ganizations providing food, disaster relief and other needs. For example, Presby-
terian organizations are providing assistance in Haiti to provide clean water, food
and medical assistance following last year’s earthquake. Please be generous in
your support of our church’s work though this ministry by giving on Palm
Sunday, April 17.

Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has sent $100,000 from One Great Hour of
Sharing funds to help in the initial Japan disaster response in cooperation with our ecumenical
partner Church World Service (CWS). PDA is working closely with PC(USA) World Mission
in identifying the best way to respond to the needs of our long-term mission partners as they
become engaged in the disaster response.
Please consider increasing your support to the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering
this year on Palm Sunday. Special needs and opportunities have arisen in response to this cur-
rent crisis, and PDA invites you to share your blessings through designated gifts that provide
the resources needed to assist with immediate, long-term and unmet needs of this disaster.
If you wish to give to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, you may write a check to
Denbigh Presbyterian Church and note in the memo line: Japan Earthquake and Tsu-
nami disasters #DR000117.
Denbigh Presbyterian Church members have donated a total of $375.00 toward this fund
as of Sunday, March 20.
Please pray for the people of Japan and other areas affected by the earthquake and tsu-
nami. Thank you for all your support and prayers throughout this time of great need.

Gideon Offering
Gideon’s International emphasis was on Sunday, February 27. Mr. Hilton Jones updated our
congregation on the work of the Gideons around the world. We contributed $134.00 to this
ministry.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Thank you to those who attended the pancake supper. Our Relay for Life Team raised $248.00
before expenses.
Krispy Kreme Donut Sale
Our Relay for Life Team raised $404.00 through donut sales. The Hall family purchased 83
boxes of donuts which our youth and their leaders distributed at Paul’s Mobile Home Estates
and Collards Trailer Park as gifts from DPC. Each person received a small card that read “Just
for you, Just because...We just want you to know that God loves you and cares for you.” The
cards also contained information about Denbigh Presbyterian Church.

Easter Egg Hunt

The Middle School youth will be hosting the Easter Egg Hunt on
Saturday, April 23 from 2:00PM – 3:00PM
Candy donations are gratefully accepted to fill the Easter Eggs. Please do not
bring chocolate as it melts easily while the eggs are hidden outdoors. Drop off
candy donations to the church office prior to church on Sunday, April 17.

Denbigh Presbyterian Pre-

Pre-Kindergarten

During the month of April our three year old classes will have a visit from the Virginia
Zoo. A representative of the zoo will present a program entitled “Eyes, Ears, and Noses.” It
will teach the children about how animals use their senses to help them survive in the wild.
Our students in these classes recently spent time exploring with and learning about their own
five senses, so this program should be a fun way to reinforce this learning.
DPPK families continue to support the ministries of DPC. During the month of March,
our students contributed 58 items to the food pantry, donated items for the PORT hygiene kits
and one family also made a financial contribution toward the bagged lunch program for PORT.
The school will be closed April 4-8 for Spring Break. Our school year is winding down,
but we have a lot more fun and learning to do when we return from this time spent with our
families! We hope you have an opportunity to take a break this Spring, too, and enjoy the
weather as the temperatures warm up.

Kitchen Fund and Renovations

Our Kitchen Team has been hard at work making plans to improve our kitchen so that we may
better serve our congregation and community. As we reported in the “Session Notes” of last
month’s Digest, the Session has authorized the Kitchen Team to move forward with renova-
tions to the kitchen, utilizing the money in the Kitchen Fund. Currently we have $17,912.68
in the Kitchen Fund.
Below is an update on what is planned, the costs (to date) and an expected timeline.

installation of additional receptacles, 6 lights on the existing hood over the
oven/range, new light fixtures, power for new oven and connect power to it; discon-
nect old stove and reconnecting new stove. Electrical Work will cost $2,425
2. New appliances have been ordered and will be installed in approximately 3 weeks.
This includes a convection oven ($3,990), restaurant electric range with extra oven
rack ($4,336), three-compartment stainless steel sink and faucet ($1,006) and deliv-
ery/set in place all appliances ($655). Appliances and delivery will cost $9,987.00
3. Plumbing improvements and repairs. Estimated at $1,200
4. New light fixtures $480
5. New cabinets and countertops will be installed (more cabinets and counters than we
currently have) $9,000

the time of his passing at the age of 97. Through Christ our family was truly blessed.
