Los verbos modales son ciertos verbos que son invariables, es decir, que se forman igual con
todas los pronombres personales. En este caso vamos a ver el uso del modal 'should'.
El verbo modal 'should' se utiliza para expresar consejos o para decir lo que
es correcto o incorrecto hacer. Se suele traducir como 'debería'.
Dar consejos = You should call your sister. (Tú deberías llamar a tu hermana.)
Decir qué es correcto o incorrecto hacer = You shouldn’t smoke (Tú no deberías fumar)
Los verbos modales son iguales para todas las personas y siempre van seguidos de
un infinitivo (sin “to‟). Además, no necesitan auxiliar para formar la negativa y la
interrogativa.
You should find another job. (Tú deberías buscar otro trabajo.)
He shouldn't talk while he is eating. (Él no debería hablar mientras está comiendo)

WORKSHOP N°2: Modal Verb CAN
El verbo modal 'can' se utiliza para expresar habilidad y para expresar permiso (posibilidad). Se
suele traducir como 'poder'.
Los verbos modales son iguales para todas las personas y siempre van seguidos de
un infinitivo (sin ‘to’). Además, no necesitan auxiliar para formar la negativa y la interrogativa.
► AFIRMATIVA: Para formar la afirmativa utilizamos el verbo modal seguido de otro verbo sin la
preposición 'to'.
You can take a biscuit. = Usted puede coger una galleta. (posibilidad)
* Aunque en español usemos el verbo ‘saber’ en inglés debemos utilizar el modal ‘can’ para
expresar habilidad.
► NEGATIVA: Para negar un verbo modal no necesitamos de ningún auxiliar. Para hacerlo
añadimos la partícula de negación ‘not’.
* Recuerda que podemos encontrar también la forma completa 'can not' o 'cannot' con el mismo
significado.
► INTERROGATIVA: Para preguntar con un verbo modal invertimos el verbo modal con el
sujeto.
► RESPUESTAS CORTAS: Para responder con respuestas cortas utilizamos el verbo modal
solamente.
* Utilizamos las formas completas para las respuestas cortas afirmativas. En las respuestas cortas
negativas utilizaremos las formas contraídas.
Los aspectos importantes que debemos tener en cuenta son los siguientes:
Usamos la misma forma para todas las personas. No usamos una forma diferente en la
tercera persona del singular.
Los modales siempre van seguidos de otro verbo sin la preposición 'to'.

Monkeys are interesting animals. They have got hair on their body and they have got a

much. But they can eat insects,too.
They are intelligent animals. They can use stones and they can
peel fruits. Scientists teach them human language and they can
understand it but they can’t speak it.
They are social animals. They have got tribes. They live in
the rainforest and they sleep on the trees. They work
together and they get their food. Sometimes, they work
together and they steal their food from humans! They are
intelligent, funny and amazing animals.

El verbo modal 'could' se utiliza para expresar habilidad en pasado y para expresar
cortesía. Se traduce como 'podía', aunque en algunos casos se traduce como 'podría'.

El modal „could‟ es el pasado de „can‟. Al igual que con todos los modales se utiliza

Utilizamos el verbo ‘have to’ para expresar necesidad u obligación externa, es decir,
obligaciones impuestas por otros.
I have to study for the exam. = Yo tengo que estudiar para el examen.
El verbo 'have to' sigue las reglas propias del Presente Simple, por lo que debemos tener en
cuenta la tercera persona del singular. Además, necesitamos los auxiliares para formar la
negativa y la interrogativa.
I have to study for the exam. = Yo tengo que estudiar para el examen.
She doesn't have to study for the exam. = Ella no tiene que estudiar para el examen.
Does she have to open the window? = ¿Tiene ella que abrir la ventana?
Los aspectos importantes que debemos tener en cuenta son los siguientes:
Recuerda que ‘have to’ suele compararse con ‘must’ y ambos pueden traducirse por ‘tener
que’ o ‘deber’.
Utilizamos el verbo ‘have to’ como cualquier verbo, por lo que necesitamos recordar las
formas del Presente Simple.
