What is Mind.....?
• Mind refers to the collective aspects of human
intellect and consciousness that originate in
the brain and which are manifest in some
combination of thought, perception, emotion,
will, memory, and imagination.

What is Mind.....?
• There are many theories of what the mind is and how
it works, dating back to Plato, Aristotle and other
Ancient Greek philosophers. Pre-scientific theories,
which were rooted in theology, concentrated on the
relationship between the mind and the soul, the
supposed supernatural or divine essence of the
human person. Modern theories, based on a
scientific understanding of the brain, see the mind as
a phenomenon of psychology, and the term is often
used more or less synonymously with
consciousness.

What is Mind.....?
• The question of which human attributes make up the mind is
also much debated. Some argue that only the "higher"
intellectual functions constitute mind: particularly reason and
memory.
• In this view the emotions - love, hate, fear, joy - are more
"primitive" or subjective in nature and should be seen as
different in nature or origin to the mind.
• Others argue that the rational and the emotional sides of the
human person cannot be separated, that they are of the same
nature and origin, and that they should all be considered as
part of the individual mind.

What is Mind.....?
Spirit (essence) manifests as - Soul/Mind.
And the (non-physical) Soul/Mind is a 'driver' of the body.
Therefore, the body, including the brain, is just a 'vehicle'
for the physical world (if we, for example, have a whole
planet as a 'body' then its brain is the synergetic
super-brain that involves all the brains of species
with a brain on that planet).
(Sri Aurobindo)

What is a Thought?
• In popular usage mind is frequently synonymous with
thought:
• It is that private conversation with ourselves that we
carry on "inside our heads" during every waking
moment of our lives. Thus we "make up our minds,"
"change our minds" or "of two minds" about
something.
• One of the key attributes of the mind in this sense is
that it is a private sphere. No-one else can "know our
mind." They can only know what we communicate.

Nature of Mind...
• Both philosophers and psychologists remain divided about the
nature of the mind.
• Some take what is known as the substantial view, and argue
that the mind is a single entity, perhaps having its base in the
brain but distinct from it and having an autonomous existence.
• This view ultimately derives from Plato, and was absorbed
from him into Christian thought. In its most extreme form, the
substantial view merges with the theological view that the
mind is an entity wholly separate from the body, in fact a
manifestation of the soul, which will survive the body's death
and return to God, its creator.

Nature of Mind...
• Others take what is known as the functional view, ultimately
derived from Aristotle, which holds that the mind is a term of
convenience for a variety of mental functions which have little
in common except that humans are conscious of their
existence.
Nature of Mind...
Sri Aurobindo……..
• According to Sri Aurobindo's psychology and
ontology, Mind or the Mental being is not
simple and uniform, but consists itself of
various strata and subdivisions, the whole
contributing to an elaborate integral theory of
psychology.
M IND

• Higher Mind - the first and lowest of the spiritual mental grades, lying
above the normal mental level.
• Spiritual Mind - either the spiritualised mind, or a general term for levels of
mind above the normal mental level (the "Mind Proper").
• Inner mind - the mental component of the Inner Being, which lies behind
the surface mind or ordinary consciousness and can only be directly
experienced by sadhana
• True mental being - is the Purusha of the mental level freed from the error
and ignorance of the lower Prakriti and open to the knowledge and
guidance above.
M IND

• Psychic Mind - a movement of the mind in which the Psychic
Being predominates; the mind turned towards the Divine
• Physical Mind - refers to either or both the Externalizing Mind and the
Mental in the Physical; it is limited to a physical or materialistic
perspective, and cannot go beyond that, unless enlightened from
above.
M IND
EDITATION
• Mind in the physical or mental physical, mentalises the
experiences of outward life and things, sometimes very
cleverly, but it does not go beyond that, unlike the
externalizing mind which deals with these things from the
perspective of reason and its own higher intelligence.
Meditation offers……….

RELAXATION
Right Relaxation
• 1 - Physical Relaxation
• 2 - Mental Relaxation
• 3 - Spiritual Relaxation

Shanthi Asana
• 1 - Physical Relaxation
• We know that every action is the result of thought. Thoughts take form in action, the body
reaching to the thought. Just as the mind may send a message to the muscles ordering them
to contract, the mind may also send another message to bring the relaxation to the tired
muscles.
• Physical relaxation first begins with the toes and then moves upward. The autosuggestion
passes through the muscles and reaches the eyes and ears at the top. Then, slowly,
messages are sent to the kidneys, liver and the other internal organs.
Shanthi Asana
• 2 - Mental Relaxation
• When experiencing mental tension, it is
advisable to breathe slowly and rhythmically
for a few minutes. Soon the mind will become
calm. You may experience a kind of floating
sensation.
• You can chant the mantra “Shum” for mental
peace.

Shanthi Asana
• 3 - Spiritual Relaxation
• However one may try to relax the mind, all tensions and
worries cannot be completely removed until one reaches
spiritual relaxation.
• As long as a person identifies with the body and the mind,
there will be worries, sorrows, anxieties, fear and anger.
These emotions, in turn bring tension. Yogis know that unless
a person can withdraw from the body/mind idea and separate
himself from the ego-consciousness, there is no way of
obtaining complete relaxation.
• Now declare that I am not the mind-body complex. I am the
soul.

What is Meditation…..?
• Meditation improves concentration, increase
self-awareness and enables us to combat
stress by helping us to relax and cope. It even
helps us to get on better with others. Many
people who follow Sri Vidya Meditation
improve their well being and some have been
able to conquer depression or addictions to
drugs or alchohol

Mind Control.
• It is some thing like one who knows how to
start a car and does not know how to stop
it!
• Although the brain may help us to plan,
think, act, design, modify, market,
restructure, manage, administrate…but if
we do not learn to switch it off, it results in
great stress and strain.

Restoring balance
• Meditation helps to restore balance
between left and right side functions of
the brain.
M IND
EDITATION
“Beta”
• The left side of the brain deals with
thinking, speaking and writing. When we
are awake and in a busy, thinking state of
the mind , the brain emits faster electrical
patterns called “beta” waves. In this state
we are able to rationalize and think about
the past and future.

Mindfulness
• Too much dwelling in the past or future
leads to the loss of the most valuable time
–the present.
• Cultivating mindfulness or learning to
become fully aware in the present
movement, heightens our sensitivity and
enables us to perform our tasks more
efficiently.
