MY BODY, MY FRIEND

Fact: I ignored you so long despite your selfless services. Seven wonders
of the world appear dwarf to you. You are the most valuable
asset in my life.

Pledge: I SHALL REMEMBER YOU AT LEAST TWICE A DAY.

ONCE IN THE MORNING AND ONCE AT BED TIME.

My skin:
My skin weighs around 5kg. It sheds 30,000 dead cells per minute and is the
biggest polluter around me.

My skeleton:
It has 206 bones (reduced from 350 at birth) and weighs 1/6th of body weight.
Fats are gradually depositing in my bone marrow and I need bone marrow
for regeneration of my blood.

My Liver:
It is the largest internal organ in my body. It stores all energy, vitamins and
Micronutrients from food and supplies me according to my need. It provides
bile acid which helps me to digest everything (including alcohol!).

My kidney:
My two kidneys, each one of the size of my feast located at the back side of
my belly just above the waist, cleans my blood once in every 10 minutes,
150 times a day and 50,000 time a year. Without kidneys no one can survive
long as they act as the scavengers. One in every 10 persons in the world suffer
from kidney problems. I need to take care of it or at least think about it.

My lung:
I inhale oxygen through it and without oxygen my brain/body cell can not survive.
87% of the oxygen goes to my brain and that is why I can think. I inhale 5-7 liters
of air per minute and athletes consumes 200 liters/minutes at peak. My lung
with its alveoli has a surface area of 70 meters square or 700 square feet; almost
the size of my two bed rooms and the living room. I breathe very shallow. I must
do some breathing exercise everyday.

My blood and heart:

I have 5 liters of blood of which only 1 liter is in my arteries and 4 liters is in
veins and capillaries. If my veins, arteries and blood vessels are laid end to end,
it will stretch around the world twice. And I store these in my body!

My heart weighs 300-400 grams only. But it pumps 25 liters of blood/minute,

36 tons/day and 1 million tons in 70 years. Amazing! And I never thought
of it or knew of it!
My heart beats (one beat is 4 operations) 65-80 times per second and 1 billion
times in 30 years. Gracious God! And I remained ignorant of this! Still worst,
I never cared for it! A pump needs regular maintenance and it breaks down in
months or years. But my heart-pump is going steady! Should not I take care
to avoid shut-down maintenance!

PROBLEM:
My body needs attention and care. But who will do it? I don’t have time.

SOLUTION:
Whom if not I. When if not now.
