Level 3 Statistics and Modelling

90645 Select and analyse continuous bi-variate data.

Assessment Overview
Part One – The Purpose Statement, Graphs and Description of Relationship

Due:

You will receive a data set on the school intranet ready to investigate. It is from the same month in the
previous year. It contains four possible variables that could be used to predict the quantity (in litres) of
ice cream needed for a day at an ice cream parlor at a theme park.

The four variables that could be used as predictors are:

• The temperature at 8 am that day (recorded to the nearest °C)
• The humidity at 8 am that day (recorded to the nearest %)
• The percentage of cloud cover at 8 am that day (recorded to the nearest %)
• The amount of rain that fell the previous day (recorded to the nearest millimetre)

You will choose two of these variables, and investigate the extent of their ability to predict the quantity
of ice cream needed for a particular day at the ice cream parlor.

You will hand Part 1 of your investigation to your teacher.

Part 1 will include:
• a purpose statement from the data selected
• identification and description of the variables you have chosen, and the two
relationships to be investigated
• two or more graphs displaying the data
• models for regression and correlation coefficients for each of the two variables that you
have chosen to compare with the quantity of ice cream needed.
• a description of the relationship between at least one pair of variables in context.

Your Part 1 must be handed in by the due date, and approved by your maths teacher before you may
proceed onto Part 2.

Part Two - Analysis and Report on the Investigation Date:
(In class – test conditions)

During this period, you will be given back your Part 1 and asked to report on only one of your two
pairs of bi-variate data.

You will choose one pair of data, identify the relationship being investigated and:

a) Analyse the data and report your findings.

Your discusssion should include the following;
• consideration of the appropriateness of the model
• interpretation of correlation coefficients, r
• interpretation of coefficients of determination, R2
• making of predictions from regression equations
• use of residuals
• discussion of the difference between correlation and causality

b) Report on the validity of your analysis.

Your discussion should include justified comments on the following;
• your method of analysis
• any assumptions made
• any limitations
• any improvements to regression models, e.g. discussing the effect of outliers, fitting of
piecewise or non-linear models
• alternative approaches
• potential sources of bias
• relevance and usefulness of results
• how widely the findings can be applied
• validity and reliability of your findings.

Overall Level of Performance

This assessment has two parts:

Part 1 involved beginning your investigation by writing a purpose statement, producing some graphs,
using regression to establish a linear model and describing the relationship to be further explored.
You will attach your Part 1 to this booklet when you hand it in.
Part 2 involves analysing and reporting on your results.

Part 2 Analyse and Report on your Results. Assessor’s
use only

In this period, you will be given back your plan and graphs and be asked to report on only
one of your two pairs of bi-variate data.

State the pair of bi-variate data that you have chosen to investigate fully.
