CROSS CULTURE - The Cross of Christ 1 Corinthians 1:17-25

Illustration - Paul Harvey once told of a little boy, whom doting

parents had spoiled into a brat. They boy carried with him a sack, and
in the sack, and in the sack, there was a most pitiful kind of stirring.
He had captured some tiny sparrows. The sound of imprisoned wing-
beats slapped hopelessly at the heavy manila walls. A pitiful chirping
now and then issued from the little paper or prison that he swung at his
side. He met an old man as he walked along.
“Watcha got in that sack?” asked the old man.
“I got a sack full of sparrows!” Said the little boy.
“What are you going to do with them?” Asked the old man.
“I’m going to take them out of the sack, one by one, and tease
them-pull of feather out now and then, and then release them for the cat
for his dinner.”
“How much would you sell the whole sack of for?” asked the
old man.
The little boy thought a moment and decided that he would put
a lot of capital on the venture and dicker down if he had to so he threw
out the figure: “I’ll take two dollars for the sack!”
“Done,” said the old man; and he reached in his pocket, pulled
out the two dollars, and gave it to the boy. The boy then handed him
the sack. The old man held it far more kindly than the reckless
youngster had.
In a moment, he untwisted the coiled paper neck of the bag and
pulled it open. In a little bit the sky connected brilliantly with the open
inside of the bag and the birds were gone. (PAUSE)
And so it happened one day that God met Lucifer with a huge
bag. Inside the bag were the most hopeless sounds of life struggling to
be free-the sounds of young and old alike wailing in pain.
“What have you got in the bag?” asked the father.
“People,” smirked Lucifer.
“And what will you do with them?”
“I will torment them one by one, and when they are all worn out
with trials, I will throw them into hell.”
“And what will you take for all of them?”
“You’re only beloved.”
“Done!” Said the father. And he reached down to earth and

gave us the gift of his Son.

And it is such a happy trade-off, we come to hold the key to the
resurrection and life.

We come together into this Sanctuary to celebrate the resurrection of

our Lord Jesus Christ, but may we not forget there would be no
resurrection had there not been a Cross.

We would have no hope if there had not been a cross.

We would have no salvation if there had not been a cross.

Paul in these verses points to the preeminence of the message of the

cross. For it was upon the cross the sacrifice for sin was completed.

Proposition - For a moment let’s reflect upon the cross of Christ, that
brings new life and hope for us this Easter Sunday morning.

Notice this one crucified on the cross made it an unusual cross.

Crosses were littered all across the landscape of Jerusalem, but upon
this Cross is one known as Christ.

Paul refers to it in v. 17 as “the cross of Christ.”

Why not the cross of JESUS? Paul refers to the Lord as Jesus in v. 2,
and v. 3. Why the cross of Christ????
Jesus means - Jehovah Saves
Christ means Messiah - anointed one by saying “The cross of Christ”
he was saying…

1. The Divine on the Cross.

Read - v. 17 - “the Cross of Christ” not Jesus (Divine Name)

Notice in the divinity on the Cross there are two aspects:

A. Christ is sinless in His humanity.

Before you can die you use must be a human. But not any
human can die for the sin of the world. There must be a sinless
life attached:

Visit with me the manger scene of his birth - he is born from the
human womb of Mary. -- See his humanity!

See him as a young boy. Once traveling to Jerusalem for

Passover was like a child of any parent, missing from the parents
view, and was unaccounted for, for a days journey. -- See his
humanity!

See him in his ministry with touched with emotions of grief at

Lazarus’ tomb, hungry from 40 days of fasting, sleeping for
weariness and fatigue in the hull of a boat on the sea of Galilee.
Yes - See his humanity!

He was born into humanity. And with that humanity came the
temptations of humanity.

Hbr 4:15 KJV - He was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet]
without sin.

B. Christ is sovereign in His deity.

Visit with me the manager of his birth and note the womb of
Mary was the womb of a virgin.
Isa 7:14 KJV - Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call
his name Immanuel.

See his parents find him when he was lost for a days journey
back in Jerusalem at the Temple speaking and teaching the
Scribes and says he was about his “Father’s business.”

Look at him frail from the 40 days of fasting and stomach pangs

griping his stomach, but see him just days later taking a simple
piece of bread from a poor little boy’s lunch and see him multiple
that piece of bread to feed 5,000.

See him sleeping in the hull of a Galilean fisherman’s boat weary

from the journey of life. But see him awaken to find his
disciples in a storm and watch him as He steps to the helm of the
boat and looks to the threatening stormy sky, and he declares
“Peace!” and the clouds recoil in serene submission. See his
deity as He looks at the boisterous waves of the sea, and
commands, “Be Still” and the waves run back to the shore like
whipped puppies scolded by their Master.

See his sinless humanity, but discover his sovereign deity.

Hear his human cry from the cross, “I thirst”

Be moved by his emotions as he says to Mary his mother,
“Woman, behold thy Son!”
Hear the pain and pathos of his voice as he says, “My God, My
God, Why hast thou forsaken me!”

The cross of Christ affirms his sinless humanity. But the cross of
Christ confirms his sovereign deity.

Hear him say in agony, “Father forgive them for they know not
what they do.”

Hear his declaration from the throne of His cross - “It is

finished!”

And the blood of the first lamb slain at the Garden of Eden and
the blood of the millions slain until the eve of Golgotha cry out -
Hallelujah!
And the captives of paradise led by Abraham and Isaac shout -
“God has provided Himself a lamb!”
And creation rocks with praise because the lamb slain from the

3.) To the Believer the cross is salvation. (Saved)

- Believers are both Jews and Gentiles v. 24

believer.
- Believers experience power (Jews require the sign) and (
Greeks seek after wisdom) wisdom

Rom 1:16 KJV - For I am not ashamed of the gospel of

Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one
that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

SONG - Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the

world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

It is possible to be lost and not know it - Illustration - Little boy

separated from his parents for five hours in Disneyworld riding
the rides. It wasn’t until it was dark and he was hungry that he
missed his parents and realized he was lost.

It is possible to be perishing and not know it. - Illustration -

How many times have we heard of someone who just fell over
dead with a heart attack with no apparent heart issues? Or die
of cancer without even knowing the cancer was growing in
them?

B. The Saved (power)

Read - v. 18 - “those being saved” “saved” (continous present

tense)

Illustration - Someone rescued from the chilly waters of death by

a sinking ship by a lifeboat is there salvation:

1.) POSITION OF SALVATION - they have been rescued

from peril.
2.) PROCESS OF SALVATION - as the lifeboat moves
toward shore.
3.) PLACE OF SALVATION - looking ahead with longing to
the lifeboat reaching the shore.

CROSS CULTURE - The Cross of Christ 1 Corinthians 1:17-25

Illustration - The Titanic’s destruction was horrible because 1491 lost

their lives. On the ship there were three classes - First Class, Second
Class and Third Class. The lowest class ticket cost $33 and the highest
first class ticket cost $4,000 equal to $90,000 today. But when the
Titanic sank there was no first class, second class or third class
passengers. There were only two classifications - LOST AND
SAVED.

Back in Southampton at the harbor people were waiting for news of

their loved ones. To communicate the news the Whitestar line took a
huge chalkboard and divided it into two headings - LOST and SAVED.

When a passenger was confirmed to have died, they would place their
name under the lost heading.

When a passenger would be picked up by a life boat it would be

telegraphed back to Southampton and they would write the name of
that passenger under the SAVED column.

It didn't matter their social or economic status. It just came down to

two final classifications - LOST or SAVED.

If you were to die today -- what be the eternal classification of your

soul -- LOST or SAVED?

It is possible to be lost and perishing and not know it, but it

impossible to be saved and not know it. Are you saved today? Do
you know Christ as your Lord and Savior?

1Cr 1:18 KJV - For the preaching of the cross is to them that
perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of
God.
