Scene: the main scenery and outside of the stage. This story takes place in a public park.

Policeman 1 outside the scenery, policeman 2 on the stage

Description of the scene + basic directions: a mother is walking around holding her little

son, enjoying the beautiful sunny day. Meanwhile, a bandit is watching every single

movement of this unaware mother who shows a wonderful love towards her child. This

bandit shows doubtless his bad intentions to the mother. At the same moment, policeman

1 is patrolling the outside the stage a little bit far from the mother and policeman 2 is

doing the same on the stage.

Mother: What a beautiful Sunday we have here! Son, look at the wonderful animals of

this wonderful park. That is a Pudu (she points at it), and that is a Llama (she also points

at it); repeat after me (she looks at speaks to her child) LLAMA, again, LLAMA, LLA-

A-MA. Bravo (she applauds enthusiastically) and they continue walking around in that

place

While that is happening, the bandit doesn’t stop watching the mother and the policemen

continue patrolling the place.

Mother: My dear son, that is a… (she points at the animal but she acts like she is not sure

of its name) ammmmm, aaa (she stops holding her son and she walks and she approaches

to the plate in which there is information of the animal [like its name and characteristics]
and when she is in front of the plate she starts to read aloud its name and she says:

Cacatua, this wonderful bird is one of the colorful species of its type and……

When she starts to read, the bandit is getting closer to the mother, and when the mother

is finishing (…of its type and… ) the bandit steals the child and starts running away from

the mother.

Mother: So, my dear son, this is a……. AAAAAAAAA (she turns to her child and when

she realizes that he is not there, she starts to look to the closest places and she shouts

towards the bandit:

AAAAAA, HELP ME, that bandit! (she continues shouting aloud while she starts to cry)

Help!!!

Policeman 1: (he runs toward the mother and arrives when she finishes her lines ) Miss,

calm down, calm down! (she stops crying and starts to recover her breath little by little)

what happened?

Mother: My little child was stolen, a bandit took him when I was reading an animals’

plate and I just (she burst into tears) I just look at him and I saw a man running in that

direction (she indicates the direction that the bandit took, it should be the same that leads

to the main stage; when the bandit arrived to the stage, he remains hidden until the

policeman 2 received the description of him, then the bandit walks trying to avoid the

policeman 2, but the policeman 2 intercepts him.)

Policeman 1: how was the man, How is he dressed?

Mother: I couldn’t see him very clearly, but he is tall, and he is wearing a (add the

description of the clothes that he will be wearing)

Policeman 1: Ok miss, stay calm (as he says this, he takes his radio and press the button,

then it sounds, BIRR).

-Alex calling Alejando, copy

Policeman 2: -Copy loud and clear, over.

Policeman 1: -There is a man (description of the bandit) with a little child coming to your

area, intercept him and ask about that child and ask to the boy about his mother, if he acts

suspicious or if he tries to escape from you, stop him, I am coming there; over-

Policeman 2: -Ok, clear-

The policeman 1 and the mother are coming to the stage while the interception and the

following dialogue take place.

The bandit looks nervous and he tries to avoid the policeman 2 in all senses; the

policeman 2 intercepts him

Policeman 2: Good afternoon sir, you look nervous, do you have a problem?

Bandit: No, no (he speaks and looks extremely nervous), emmm, there is no problem,

officer.

Policeman 2: it is a wonderful day, isn’t it?

Bandit: Yes, it is (he looks everywhere except to the policeman)

Policeman 2: Is he your son?

Bandit: Yes, he is…

Policeman 2: What is his name?

Bandit: His name is… Juan

Policeman 2: Really, and how old is he?

Bandit: He is 7 year-old
Policeman 2: He doesn’t look like a boy of that age, what is your name? (he asks to the

boy as he get closer to the kid and he knees on one leg just to listen to the kid)…

Policeman 2: Your name is Carlos! (He repeats the same information that the kid says),

and how old are….STOP!!! (the bandit starts to escape with the child)

The bandit starts to run away, the policeman 2 chases him and tries to catch him on the

stage, the bandit struggles fiercely against the bandit. Policeman 1 arrives to the stage

and helps the policeman 2 to subdue the bandit. Then the mother comes and she takes

her child.

Mother: Thank goodness!!! My child, my beloved child!!! (she cries of happiness)

Mother: Thank you policemen, thank you!

Policemen 1 & 2: It’s nothing, it’s our duty!

Mother and bandit disappear from the stage, only the 2 policemen remain there.

The policemen start to recite the first stanza of the poem:

“I'M A POLICEMAN"

I'm a policeman, Oh why? you may ask.

It's not that the pay is well worth the task.

It's something deep down, it's something inside.

It's not just a job where you're there for the ride.

The dangers we face, we know they're for real.

But it's not just a job, it's something you feel.

------------------------------

We're out on the beat, it's late at night.

This is the time when families fight.

Shouting and cursing, then comes a hit.

A loud screaming child, a mad raging fit.

We come on the scene there's not a set play.

We have to assess with our fears pushed away.

There's darting eyes and another door.

Can we see all the people or are there more?

A bang and a crash come from the back.

Is someone else there to take a crack?

We take control but it's never easy.

The mess and the people can make you feel queasy.

We return to the beat and hope it's all right.

But we know we'll be back for the very next fight.

A stop light runner and a simple chase.

But we never know what we may face.

Another bad drunk? A kid on a high?

Or something much worse to give us a try?

We can't take it easy, we can't take a chance.

Always a new tune, always a new dance.

There's racial tensions and rights to uphold.

We have to show patience but yet appear bold.

It's easier to say that "all must be fair."

When you're not on the street, when you're not the one there.

Those feelings of pressure we must put aside.

With our actions up front and keeping our pride.

It's harder on family than it is on me.

Their imagined worst fear are all that they see.

I'm on the job and handling it well.

But they're safe at home imagining hell.

When the telephone rings and it's late at night.

They wake in a sweat with a terrible fright.

But their awful thoughts I must leave at the station.

'Cause they might dull my senses and force hesitation.

So why do I do it? Where is the joy?

There's people who smile, a found little boy.

There's laughter and friendship with people who care.

There's knowing a difference just 'cause we're there.

There's sunshine and sadness and having the nerve.

To get up each morning and say that " I serve."
