INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
General, ‘Three factors must be considered when installing your centerless grinder.
First, the machine must be located properly so that external factors, such as vibration
tnd excess heat or cold, will not affect the working properties of the machine, Second, the
fHoor must be substantial enough to support the machine weight and not deform wnder nor~
‘mal working conditions. Third, the machine must be accurately leveled at initial instal-
lation and the level checked periodically thereafter.
\When lifting the machine, attach a three-legged cable (see Figure
iting the Machin
‘The
13) of chain boist from the lifting brackets on the machine to an overhead crane.
cerane should be able to safely support a load of 12 tons.
Wooden blocks should be inserted between the machine an! the lifting cables or chains to
prevent damage to the precision parts of the machine.
“The hook-up for the machine {s as follows: ‘Three "P" hooks are bolted to the machine
base and are located at the left front, right front and at the rear of the machine. ‘The rear
hook is located in the center of the machine to provide a three potnt suspension system and
a good balance.
[After the machine has been set in place the lifting hooks should be removed and stored for
future use. ‘The tapped holes should be plugged to keep the threads clean in the event of
future use.

Location and Foundation Requirements. Locate the machine in an area free from extrane
ous vibrations, having @ clean, dust-free atmosphere and moderate temperature. Do not
place the machine in an area subject to extreme temperature changes as this will affect
the accuraey of the machine, Provide adequate space in all directions to permit use of the
‘muchine's maximum ranges and to allow servicemen adequate room to make adjustments.
‘To maintain the accurate alignment bullt into the machine, a foundation constructed of re~
inforced concreto, a minimum of 6 inches thick, 1s recommended. Ifthe building, in which
the machine is to be placed, has a wooden or similar type Moor which is a short distance
hove ground level, we recommend that the flooring be removed, in the avea of the ma-
‘chine, and a eonerete slab be constmicted from ground to floor level, If the machine is
{installed on an upper floor, locate it over a supporting column, if possible, to minimize
vibration. If possible, locate the machine where overhead lifting equipment of at Least 12
tons capacity is available for handling and positioning the machine.
leveling. For leveling your centerless grinder, =
sensitive graduated tube spirit level, reading to 10
ssecontls per graduation (0, 0005" per foot) and pro-
vided with serew adjustment, should be used. A
carpenter's level or the bulb in a machinist's combi~
nation square is not good enough. The actual length
of a level frame has no hearing on the accuracy of
the level — the length of the glass tube determines
level sensitiveness. short level with a long tube
is best.
‘To level the machine, place the leveling instrument
fon the work rest pad {top surface of the lower slide).
‘Then adjust, the 1-1/4"
corners until the leveling instrument indicates that
the work rest pad is level both lengthwise and across its surface, Finally, adjust the re~
raining leveling screws until they are solidly in contact with the floor; recheck level of
‘work rest pad; and lock all leveling serews with lock nuts.
ling screws at the bed Lava st Aey
Boling the Machine to the Foundation. Where extreme grinding accuracy 1s required, it
‘may be necessary to replace the standard leveling serew (Figure 14) with a combination
leveling jack and hold-down bolt.
Bolting the machine to the foundation may be accomplished by means of the hole through
the conter of the leveling jack. Each consists of an adjusting screw, locking nut, and a
steel disc screw-seat which increases the effective bearing area of the serew upon the
“ ‘The Cincinnati Milling Machine Co,INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
foundation. Before proceeding, it will be necessary to accurately locate the bolt holes.
Notice that the center distances of bolt holes given on the "floor plan" (Figures 154 and
15B) are approximated, Proceed as follows:
4, Drill the bolt hotes about 8" in diameter.
2, Lower the machine onto several 1" thick boards, and engage the holddown muts on the
‘anchor bolts. When lowering the machine over the anchor bolts, the steel dise serew-
seats must first be dropped over the anchor bolts before inserting the bolts through
the leveling serews.
3, Pill the holes around the anchor bolts with quick drying cement, thin enough to flow
casily. After the cement around the anchor bolts has set, the boards should be re-
moved, the machine carefully leveled, and the anchor bolts tightened securely

LUBRICATION
General, A completely automatic lubrication system, together with a number of manually
attended alemite grease fittings, are used for the lubrication of 00 Series Centerless
Grinding Machines. Periodic and thorough lubrication with the correct lubricant will help
maintain the precision and accuracy built into the machine and assure a long working Ife.
Ater the machine has been uncrated and cleaned, fill the hydraulic of! and lubricant reser-
voles and lubricate all points called out in the lubrication chart and diagram (see pages 19
land 20). A list of approved lubricants may be obtained from Publication No, M-2258.
Regulating and Grinding Wheel Lubrication System. This lubrication system utilizes hy=
raulie fluta from the hydraulle system, ‘The fluid is housed in a 20-gallon reservoir loc-
‘ated in machine base. The main hydraulic pump supplies the lubrication. The high pres~
sure flow per minute Is controlled by a flow control valve. This pump provides lubrication
for the grinding wheel and regulating whee! spindle bearings and the regulating wheel drive
‘box and sprockets. A replaceable cartridge-type filter 1s mounted in the wheethead.
Figure 16
dette Unit
'A protective pressure switch, located in the grinding wheel motor electrical ctreuit, in~
tures that there {i sufffetent lubrication for the spindle bearings at all times. ‘The switch
fs actuated by the lubricating ofl pressure within the spindle compartments. As lubrication
pressure builds up to the working level the switch closes, allowing the grinding wheel motor
{o start. Conversely, if the pressure drops below the proper working pressure (7 psi), the
grinding wheel drive motor is automatically stopped,
16 ‘The Cincinnati Milling Machine Co,LUBRICATION
Wey Lubrication System. Standard Centuramlc and TwinGrip machines are equipped with a
‘Trabon lubrication system. This system {s entirely self-contained, employing its own
reservoir, sight gage, pamp and lines. It also has a pressure safety disk in case of
Clogged lines. ‘The system lubricates the lower slide ways upper slide dovetails and bearing
Surfaces. Mt also takes rare of Regulating Wheel Truing, Grinding Wheel Truing, sliding
wheel surfaces, profile parts, and cam surfaces if necessary. This system is controlled
by a timer located in the electrical cabinet and set at the factory. A sight gage and filler
port are provided for checking and maintaining the reservoir oil level.
Regulating Wheel Spindle Outboard Support. The bearing supporting the outer end of the
regulating wheel (nearest the operator) is pressure lubricated by main hydrautte pump.
Proper lubrication plays an important part in permitting these units to
fumetion accurately. The grinding wheel truing unit is automatically lubricated except for
one alemite grease fitting. This fitting requires monthly attention.
Regulating Wheel Drive Sheaves. Two variable piteh pulleys are used in the regulating
‘wheel drive system, ‘The driven pulley incorporates an alemite type grease fitting which
‘Should be tended at least once every three months, Fill the sheave with the recommended
type lubrfeant until the grease overflows at the small hole in the pipe plug on the outer half
of the sheave. ‘The drive pulley 1s an oil filed pulley which should be checked every 500
hours of operation. To check the fluid level, remove the pulley from the motor and lay it
ton its side on a bench, Remove the pipe plug from the upper face and observe the quantity
of oll. Fill the pulley to the plug opening and replace the plug. (Rebuild the pulley every
2 years or when it uses 60% of the reservoir capacity in 500 hours operation.)
Filter. All lubricating off for the grinding wheet spindle flows «
cated in the hydraulic pump area and another behind the spindle in the wheethead area. AML
Iubrication ofl for the regulating wheel drive and spindle bearings is also filtered through
the filter loeated in the hydraulic pump area. Both filter elements are the replaceable type,
‘As a general rule, the filter element should be replaced at least once every six months.
However, it may be desirable to replace the element more frequently if the grinder is oper
fied in an extremely dusty area, ‘To replace the element, remove the nut at the top of the
filter and remove the housing and eartidge as a unit, Slide the cartridge out of the housing
over the center rod. Clean the housing thoroughly and install a new cartridge (replacement
‘cartridge number: CMMCo. No, 246827; CMMCo, No, 2280-F).

Rotation of this knob moves the slides in the same direction as the handwheel.
Each graduation on the fine inerement dial 1s .000050" of the workpiéce diameter.
One complete revolution of the dial equals .004" on the diameter. The infeed
clamping lever "BY clamps the erossfeed handwheel in a fbxed position during
grinding operations. With the clamping lever in the lower position, the handwheel
fs unclamped. Raise the lever to clamp the erossfeed handwheel. A positive stop
fs used in conjunction with the crossfeed mechanism to simplify accurate sizing
on repetitive cuts, The stop consists of the positive stop lever and positive stop
lug, When the lever Is moved toward the handwhoel, and the wheel rotated in
counterclockwise direction, the positive stop lug on the wheel will engage the
lever and prevent further erosefeed motion. Moving the lever away from the
handwheel disengages the positive stop mechanism.
fc. Infeod Lever (Figure 22). The infeed lever is used for manual infeed grinding
‘operations. When the lever is moved through its 90° are, the regulating wheel
will move approximately . 046". With the lever in its full "up" position, the regu-
lating wheel will be fully retracted. The infeed lever must always be in its full

4. Regulating Wheel Speed Range Selector Lever (Figure 23), This lever is used to
select the range of speeds required for the regulating wheel. Placing the lever in
the HI position provides a speed range from 56 to 300 rpm or 59 to 915 rpm, de-
pending upon the machine speed range. With the lever in the LO position, a speed

£ Tachometer (Figure 25). The
approximate speed of the regula-
‘ng wheel spindle is displayed on
the tachometer dial.
& Loadmeter (Figure 244). All
‘machines are equipped with a
loadmeter which will indicate the
‘capacity under which the spindle
rive motor is operating during
fa grinding operation. For continu~
ues ‘ous thru-feed operation, it is not
Figure 23 recommended to exceed 100% of
equating Wheel ~ Varisble Speed the rated load capacity of the mo-
(Conats tor as indicated by the loadmeter.
For intermittent infeed type grin-
ding, a load of up to 125% of the
load capacity is considered safe
{or normal operation.
Operating the machine at full 100% load capacity, however, does not always indi-
cate the Centerless Grinder is performing at its'peak of efficiency. Other factors
to be considered are wheel wear and rate of stock removal, diamond life and time
lost due to excessive wheel truing. It is of prime importance to select the correct
‘whee! for the grinding operation to obtain efficient results. If an improper wheel
is selected, the loadmeter may indicate whether the wheel is too hard and glazing
Publication No. G-869. 23CINCINNATI 200 AND 300 SERIES CENTERLESS GRINDING MACHINES
oF whether itis too soft and breaking down permanently,
If the londmeter 1s ignored and the machine
is operated at an overload rate for too long
‘an interval, civenit hrealcars in the electri
ceal circuit will open and automatically shut
‘down the machine. It will then be necessary
to reset the cireuit breakers, located in the
electrical control compartment, before the
‘machine can continue operation. Of course,
to prevent this condition from recurring it
wil be necessary to readjust the machine
to operate at a more satisfactory load,
Cutting Fluid Valves (Figure 24B). These cise
valves control the flow of cutting fluid to the Figo 288
grinding and regulating wheels. The larger Uasaneter
valve controls the flow to the grinding wheel
While the smaller valve supplies the regula~
ting wheel. Both valves are operated by moving the lever attached to the top of
the valve, Fluid flow is stopped when the lever is turned fully counterclockwise
Rotating the lever clockwise inereases fluid flow until maximum flow is obtained
‘with the lever tumed fully clockwise.
Upper and Lower Slide Clamps (Figure 25). The upper and lower slides provide
‘the adjastable movement which enables the
Centerless Grinder to grind workpieces hav-
ing a large range of diameter sizes. The low~
‘er slide carries the workrest, upper slide
and regulating wheel housing. It 1s operated
by the infeed handwheel and moves the above
‘mentioned items toward and away from the
‘grinding wheel when the upper slide is
felamped to the lower slide. Lever "A" is
‘used to clamp the lower slide to the swivel
plate. ‘The upper alide, carrying the regula~
tng wheel housing, is used to move the regi
lating wheel to or away from the work rest.
Movement of the upper slide is also controlled
by the infeed handwheel; however, before
Independent movement of the upper slide is
possible, the lower slide must be in a clamped
cu ae position and the upper slide unclamped.
‘The Cincinnati Milling Machine Co.OPERATOR CONTROLS
comes Figure 25,
‘The clamping knob and lever "B" are tised to clamp the upper slide to the lower
slide. Moving the lever and knob in a clockwise direction applies the clamps.
During the actual grinding operation, these controls are usually clamped and the
lower slide left unclamped so that compensation for wheel wear and size can be
made easily and quickly,
Grinding Wheel Tring Unit Controls. The standard grinding wheel profile truing unit
is shown in Figure 26. Following is an explanation of the controls and adjustments
Which operate this untt
‘8. Diamond Adjusting Knob “A, The diamond is mounted in a 7/16" diameter nib.
‘The nib is then clamped in & diamond holder which is attached to a sleeve within
the truing unit housing, The sleeve may be moved "in" and "out", causing the
diamond to be moved toward or away from the grinding wheel. Actuation of the
floove is accomplished by timing #he adjusting knob "AM". Rotating the knob elock~
‘wise extends the diamond; counterclockwise retracts the diamond, A micrometer
ial indieates the amount of diamond travel and is graduated in . 001"
Clamping Lever "B". Moving this lever forward clamps the housing in position.
Clamping this housing may be desirable for straight cylindrical truing operations;
however, the lever must be in the vertical (unclamped) position for profile truing
operations.

Booster Lover. Moving this lever either forward or backward moves the tring
unit housing and cam follower in the same direction that the lever is moved. The
purpose of this lever Is to manually help the eam follower over rises in the cam,
thereby eliminating the tendency of the follower to jam against steep rises.
Movement Control Lever “A” (Figure 27A). This lever controls the direction of
movement of the truing unit. ‘There are five positions in which the lever may be
placed: (1) FAST, (2) IN, (3) STOP, (4) OUT and (6) FAST. Rotation of the lever
to the left, or IN, position feeds the truing unit away from the operator. At the
end of the stroke, travel is reversed by moving the lover to the OUT position.
‘Movement of the lever to the FAST position causes the unit to move at a rapid
traverse rate in the dizection in which the lever was moved (toward the IN or OUT
position). The truing unit can be stopped at any point in its travel by moving the
‘control lever to the STOP position,
