A Story of Sin and Hope

Narrator: After God had formed the world and created living creatures on it, he made a
man and woman. He called the first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve. He placed
Adam and Eve in the beautiful garden called Eden or paradise. Here, Adam and Eve
had everything they need without working for it or worrying about it. God often talked
with them, telling them everything they need to know. Adam and Eve lived in perfect
happiness. But God gave them one firm command.

God: You are free to eat any of the trees in the garden except the tree of Knowledge of
Good and Bad. From that tree you shall not eat. The moment you eat you are surely
doomed to die.

Narrator: Adam and Eve did not know the difference between good and evil for they
have never known anything bad. God knew that if they learned about bad things, they
would never again know perfect happiness. One day, while Eve was looking at the
beautiful fruit of the forbidden tree she saw a serpent.

Serpent: (to Eve) Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?

Eve: It is only the fruit from that tree (pointing to the forbidden tree) that we are not to
eat or even touch; otherwise we will die.

Serpent: (laughing). Oh, no, you certainly will not die! God does not want you to eat it
because He does not want you to know about good or bad. He knows that the moment
you eat it you will be as wise as God, himself.

Narrator: Eve was tempted. She picked the fruit and both she and Adam tasted it. At
once they knew they knew they had done wrong. Afraid and ashamed, they hide among
the trees. Then God came into the garden.

God: Adam, where are you?

Adam: (after a long while). I am sorry, Lord. I heard You come to the garden but I was
afraid, so I hid myself.

God: (sternly). You have, then, eaten from the tree of which I had forbidden you.

Adam: It was Eve, Lord. She gave me fruit from the tree and so I ate it.

God: (to Eve). Why did you do such thing?

Eve: (in low voice). The Serpent tricked me into it.

God: (to the Serpent). Because you have done this, you shall be banned from all the
animals and from the wild creatures; on your belly shall you crawl, all the days of your
life. I will put hatred between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers¶;
he will strike at your head, while you strike at his feet.

(to Eve). I will intensify the pain of your child bearing; in pain shall you bring forth
children and your husband shall be your master.

(to Adam). Curse is the ground because of you! In toil shall you eat its yield all the days
of your life. Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you, as you eat of the plants of the
field. By the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat, until you return to the ground,
from which you where taken, for you are dirt, and dirt you shall return.
Narrator: And God¶s words came true. However, he also made a promise. He promised
that a child would come to the world and be the redeemer of the human race. The
promise was a ray of hope for Adam, his children, and his children¶s¶ children. Until
Jesus came, the people kept looking forward to the coming of the Child who would be
the Redeemer of the world.
