GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

(Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod)

LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS
April 10, 2011

THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

PRAYER UPON ENTERING CHURCH

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Resurrection and the Life so that all who believe in You
will live even though they die. By Your Holy Spirit’s power I confess You as my Lord and
Savior, trusting that You are the fulfillment of all of God’s promises and by faith seeing in You
and Your life, death and resurrection the very glory of God. Keep me steadfast in this faith and
confession. I pray this in Your holy name. Amen
WELCOME
Welcome to Grace! We especially welcome our guests and visitors this morning. It is
our prayer that your faith will be strengthened by God’s Word shared with you today. We are
currently in that part of the Church Year known as Lent. Lent is a time for greater personal
reflection, even self-denial. It is also a time to remember that in the waters of Holy Baptism we
were made children of God and a time for us to consider the great love the Father has poured out
on us in Christ Jesus. We ask that everyone fill out an attendance registration card found at each
pew and return it to an Usher as the Offering is collected. Restrooms are located on the lower
level of this building or across the bridge on this floor level before entering the fellowship hall. If
you have any questions please ask one of our greeters or ushers. Children are welcome in our
Service and will be invited to come forward for a Children’s Message. Parents may accompany
them. A nursery for infants and toddlers is located downstairs for anyone who has need.
HOLY COMMUNION
Holy Communion will be celebrated in the 8:15 Service today. In this sacrament we
receive Christ’s very body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Those who are not members of
Grace are asked to speak with our Pastor before partaking of this sacrament so that the unity of
faith might be established. Thank you for honoring this request.
AS WE GATHER
Throughout these forty days of Lent we have seen how our Lord Jesus revealed Himself
and His purpose through Word and sign. Today we see the greatest sign so far as Jesus called the
dead to life, prefiguring His own resurrection. The Old Testament reading for today tells us how
long ago our Lord spoke to prophet Ezekiel of the day when the dry bones of death would give
way to the power of life and resurrection. As that hope once sustained God’s people, so are we
sustained in hope and renewed for life’s journey until it leads us at last to our own joyful
resurrection with Christ, who is the resurrection and the life.
THE ALTAR FLOWERS

The Altar Flowers are given today to the glory of God and the beautification of
His House by Maxine Biggers in loving memory of her mother Mrs. Edythe Brundage
and in thanksgiving for God’s many blessings.

Confession and Absolution (8:15)

Stand

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

Invocation Matthew 28:19b; [18:20]

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen

Exhortation 1 John 1:8–9

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and
cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

-3-
Confession of Sins
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have
sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what
we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not
loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal
punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,
renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to
the glory of Your holy name. Amen

Absolution [John 20:19–23]

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives
you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I
therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
C Amen

Introit Ps. 116:1–4, 8; antiphon: Ps. 116:15

P Precious in the sight of the LORD

C is the death of his saints.
P I love the LORD, because he has heard
C my voice and my pleas for mercy.
P Because he inclined his ear to me,
C therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
P The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
C I suffered distress and anguish.

-4-
P Then I called on the name of the LORD:
C "O LORD, I pray, deliver my soul!"
P For you have delivered my soul from death,
C my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P Precious in the sight of the LORD
C is the death of his saints.

Sermon John 11:1–45
“Seeing the Glory of God”

Stand

Nicene Creed (8:15)

C I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory
to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen

-9-
Apostles' Creed (10:45)

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen

Prayer of the Church

P Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to
their needs.

Each petition ends with the following:

P Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with the following:

P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy;
through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen

Preface 2 Timothy 4:22; [Colossians 3:1]; [Psalm 136]

Proper Preface
P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks
to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who
overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for many that with
cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity
and truth. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we
laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

- 12 -
Sanctus Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9

Prayer of Thanksgiving
P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You
created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.
With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing
sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive,
renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body
and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray,
from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb
in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve
us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen

The Words of Our Lord Matthew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24;

Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23–25
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had
given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T
body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

- 13 -
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He
gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T
blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ 1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20

P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He
comes.
C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and
to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed
death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into
heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and
teach us to pray:

Lord's Prayer Matthew 6:9–13

C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen

TODAY’S SUNDAY SCHOOL lesson is the raising of Jesus good friend, Lazarus. In
resurrecting Lazarus (John 11:1–45), Jesus demonstrated that He can indeed raise all who
believe in Him for salvation. True life is eternal life with Jesus. Talk with your children
about how in this life we see and experience the effects of sin—sickness, injury, and
death. Assure them that Jesus, our savior from sin and death, has guaranteed that in
heaven our lives will be free of sin and its effects eternally. As a family, confess the
second article of the Apostles’ Creed together.
