COLLECTION REVIEW
Volunteering in the Ramey Media Center enabled me to be able to know exactly what
was available for the stated standards. Ramey however, does not follow Georgia State
Standards so this was not a 7th grade objective yet African studies are taught in 9th grade.
The school's selection was somewhat lacking. I searched "Africa" on the school's database
and pulled up the relevant material listed below in this report. I also went and physically
looked over material that the Media Center had on hand. I used the following online catalogs
for the "ordering of new materials": Amazon, Scholastic, and Delaney. I used a regular
catalog from Mackin.
The Media Center is set up with large stacked bookcases that house all material except
the easy reading section. The easy section is located in an area closest to the front entrance.
Reference material is located near the audiovisual material and is near large tables for
research. However, most students use the computer to find information regarding the subject
area.
The books that were found for this project were almost all relatively new. There were a
couple that were in need of repair and the Media Specialist and I took care of their needs.
There is only one visual material and one audio selection on this subject and that is
something I will address in the ordering part of this project.
There are over 27,000 books located in the Media Center. The books on Africa and
materials have been checked out a little over 200 times during the course of the year.
Looking over the content material that is available currently is quite thorough however, there
is not enough material for all students to have access at the same time. This will also be
addressed in the ordering phase of this project.
The final aspect that needs to be addressed is the multicultural aspect of the books. I
was pleased to see how many books discussed the differences between cultures and
religions within Africa.
Collection Needs:
1. Choose resources that have been published within the last 10 years, if possible.
2. Choose more audiovisual materials as this area is greatly neglected.
3. Choose more books focusing on the similarities and differences between cultures and
religions.
