THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD

BEING THE FORTIETH DAY AFTER EASTER

INTROIT

EG 689 (Alt). Viri Galilaei. Acts 1. YE men of Galilee, why

stand ye gazing up into heaven? alleluia: in like
manner as ye have seen him going up into heaven, so
shall he come again, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 47. O
clap your hands together, all ye people: O sing unto
God with the voice of melody. Glory be to the Father,

IG 52. Ps. 47. Ant. GOD is gone up with a merry noise,

/ the LORD with the sound of the trumpet.
1 O clap your hands together, all ye peoples; / O
sing unto God with the voice of melody.
2 For the LORD Most High is to be feared; / he is a
great King over all the earth.
3 He subdued the peoples under us, / and the
nations under our feet.
4 He chose our heritage for us, / even the glorious
land of Jacob, whom he loved.
5 God is gone up with a merry noise, / the LORD
with the sound of the trumpet.
6 O sing praises, sing praises unto our God; / O
sing praises, sing praises unto our King.
7 For God is the King of all the earth: / sing ye
praises with understanding.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, / and to
the Holy Ghost;

P545
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall
be, / world without end. Amen.
Ant. GOD is gone up with a merry noise, / the LORD
with the sound of the trumpet.
Gloria is said.
THE COLLECT.

G RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that like

as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord
Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we
may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with
him continually dwell; who liveth and reigneth with
thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God,
world without end. Amen.
THE LESSON. Acts 1. 1.

T HE former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of

all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the
day in which he was taken up, after that he through
the Holy Spirit had given commandments unto the
Apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he
showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs,
appearing unto them during forty days, and speaking
of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: and,
being assembled together with them, commanded
them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but
wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye
have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water,
but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many
days hence.
When they therefore were come together, they
asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time
restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto
them, It is not for you to know the times or the
seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit is
come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me,
both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria,
and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when

P546
he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was
taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight.
And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven, as he
went up, behold, two men stood by them in white
apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand
ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is
taken up from you into heaven, shall so come, in like
manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

18 Thou art gone up on high, and hast led captivity
captive, and received gifts among men, / yea, even
among the rebellious, that the LORD God might dwell
with them. Alleluia.
19 Blessed be the LO R D , who daily beareth our
burden, / even the God who is our salvation. Alleluia.
20 He is our God, even the God of whom cometh
deliverance; / and God is the L O R D by whom we
escape death. Alleluia.
THE GOSPEL. St Mark 16. 14.

JESUS appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat,

and upbraided them with their unbelief and
hardness of heart, because they believed not them
which had seen him after he was risen. And he said
unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the
Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is
baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall

P547
be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that
believe: In my name shall they cast out evil spirits; they
shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up
serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall
not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and
they shall recover.
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he
was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand
of God. And they went forth and preached
everywhere, the Lord working with them, and
confirming the word with signs following.
After the Gospel, the Paschal Candle, figure of the risen Christ, is
extinguished: it is removed after Mass

Creed is said during the Octave.

EG 690. Exaudi, Domine. CONSIDER, O Lord, and hear

me, when I cry unto thee, alleluia; unto thee my heart
hath said, Thy face, Lord, have I sought; thy face,
Lord, will I seek: O hide not thou thy face from thy
servant, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 27. The Lord is my light,
and my salvation: whom then shall I fear? Glory be to
the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As

Or

IG 53. Ps. 27. Ant. HEARKEN unto my voice, O LORD,

when I cry unto thee; / have mercy upon me and hear
me.
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom
then shall I fear? / the LORD is the strength of my life;
of whom then shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked came upon me to eat up my
flesh, / even mine enemies and my foes, they stumbled
and fell.
3 Though an host of men were laid against me, yet
shall not my heart be afraid; / and though there rose up
war against me, yet will I put my trust in him.
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD , which I
will require: / even that I may dwell in the house of the

P549
LORD all the days of my life, to behold the fair beauty
of the LORD, and to visit his temple.
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his
tabernacle; / yea, in the secret place of his dwelling
shall he hide me, and set me up upon a rock of stone.
6 And now shall my head be lifted up / above mine
enemies round about me.
7 Therefore will I offer in his dwelling an oblation
with great gladness: / I will sing, and speak praises
unto the LORD .
8 Hearken unto my voice, O LO R D , when I cry
unto thee; / have mercy upon me and hear me.
9 My heart hath talked with thee: 'Seek ye my
face'; / 'Thy face, LORD, will I seek.'
10 O hide not thy face from me, / nor cast thy
servant away in displeasure.
11 Thou hast been my succour; / leave me not,
neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
12 When my father and my mother forsake me, / the
LORD taketh me up.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, / and to
the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall
be, / world without end. Amen.
Ant. HEARKEN unto my voice, O L ORD , when I cry

THE COLLECT.

our Saviour Christ is gone before; who liveth and

THE EPISTLE. 1 St Peter 4. 7.

B RETHREN: THE end of all things is at hand; be ye

therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And
above all things have fervent charity among yourselves:
for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use
hospitality one to another without grudging. As every
man hath received the gift, even so minister the same
one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace
of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles
of God: if any man minister, let him do it as of the
ability which God giveth; that God in all things may
be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise
and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye
should not be offended. They shall put you out of the
synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever
killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And
these things will they do unto you, because they have

unless it be a Feast.

THE VIGIL OF PENTECOST

(WHITSUN EVE)

IF THE FONT IS TO BE BLESSED.

The Office having been said, the Priest and Ministers, vested in
violet, go up to the Altar, and after the reverence, the Priest kisses
it in the centre, and they go to the sedilia. Then are read the same
Prophecies (without title) as at the Easter Vigil, the candles of the
altar being unlighted up to the beginning of the Mass. At the end of
the Prophecies are said the Collects without Let us bow the knee.
After the last Collect the Celebrant and Ministers descend to the
Font during the Tract. Ps. 42. Like as the hart. Before he enters the
Baptistry to bless the Font he says these prayers.

Priest: The Lord be with you.

People: And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

G RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that we

who celebrate the feast of the gift of the Holy
Spirit; being inflamed with heavenly desires may ever
thirst for the fountain of life, Jesus Christ thy Son our
Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity
of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
Amen.
Let us pray.

A LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast willed

thy Paschal Sacraments to be comprehended in the
mystery of fifty days: grant, we beseech thee; that the

P553
people which were scattered abroad by the confusion
of tongues may, by thy heavenly gift, be gathered
together again into one confession of thy Name;
through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and
reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost,
ever one God, world without end. Amen.
Then he proceeds to bless the Font as on Holy Saturday.

But where the Font is not blessed, when the last Prophecy and
Collect are ended the Celebrant lays aside his chasuble and with the
Ministers lie prostrate before the Altar: and all kneeling the Litany
of the Saints is chanted. But when has been said the final repetition
of R. Good Lord deliver us, the Priest and Ministers arise, and go to
the Sacristy to array themselves in red vestments for the Solemn
Mass; and meanwhile the Altar candles are lighted. At the end of
the Litany, Kyrie eleison is solemnly intoned, and repeated as
usual. This having been begun the Priest and the Ministers proceed
to the Altar, and make the Confession: then going up, the Priest
kisses the Altar, and censes it in the accustomed manner. The Kyrie
eleison being finished, Gloria in excelsis is solemnly begun and the
bells are rung.

THE LESSON. Acts 19. 1.∗

I T came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth,

Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to
Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, he said unto
them, Did ye receive the Holy Ghost when ye
believed? And they said unto him, We have not so
much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And
he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized?
And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul,
John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance,
saying unto the people, that they should believe on
him which should come after him, that is, on Christ
Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in
the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid
his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them;
and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all
the men were about twelve. And he went into the
synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three
months, reasoning and persuading as to the things
concerning the kingdom of God.

THE LESSON. Acts 2. 1.

W HEN the day of Pentecost was fully come, the

Disciples were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a
rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where
they were sitting. And there appeared unto them
cloven tongues, like as of fire, and it rested upon each
of them: and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit
gave them utterance.
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout
men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when
this sound was heard, the multitude came together,
and were bewildered, because that every man heard
them speak in his own language. And they were all
amazed, and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold,
are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how
hear we every man in our own tongue wherein we
were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and
the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judæa, and
Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and
Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about
Cyrene, and strangers from Rome, both Jews and
proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them
speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day
ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me,
and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and
keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that
loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love
him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto
him, (not Iscariot,) Lord, how is it that thou wilt
manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me,
he will keep my words, and my Father will love him,
and we will come unto him, and make our abode with
him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:
and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the
Father's which sent me.
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet
present with you. But the Comforter, which is the
Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he
shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your
remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace

P562

Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee,

THE LESSON. Acts 10. 34.

I N THOSE DAYS: Peter opened his mouth, and

said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of
persons; but in every nation he that feareth him, and
worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. The
word which God sent unto the children of Israel,
preaching good tidings of peace by Jesus Christ (he is
Lord of all); that word, I say, ye know, which was
published throughout all Judæa, beginning from
Galilee, after the baptism which John preached: how
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and with power; who went about doing good, and
healing all that were oppressed by the devil: for God
was with him. And we are witnesses of all things
which he did, both in the land of the Jews, and in
Jerusalem; Whom they slew, and hanged on a tree: him
God raised up the third day, and showed him openly;
not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before
of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him

P565
after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to
preach unto the people, and to bear witness that it is
he who was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick
and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that
through his name whosoever believeth in him shall
receive forgiveness of sins.
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit
fell on all them which heard the word. And they of
the circumcision which believed were astonished, as
many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles
also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. For
they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify
God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water,
that these should not be baptized, which have received
the Holy Spirit as well as we? And he commanded
them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then
prayed they him to tarry certain days.

THE GOSPEL. St John 3. 16.

G OD so loved the world, that he gave his only-

begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God
sent not his Son into the world to judge the world, but
that the world through him might be saved. He that
believeth on him is not judged: but he that believeth
not is judged already; because he hath not believed in
the name of the only-begotten Son of God. And this is
the judgement, that light is come into the world, and
men loved darkness rather than light, because their
deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth
the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds

should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to

THE GOSPEL. St John 10. 1.

JESUS said unto his disciples, Verily, verily I say unto

you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheep-
fold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a
thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door
is the shepherd of the sheep: to him the porter
openeth; and the sheep hear his voice, and he calleth
his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And,
when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before
them, and the sheep follow him; for they know his
voice. And a stranger will they not follow; but will flee
from him; for they know not the voice of strangers.
This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they
understood not what things they were which he spake
unto them.
Then said Jesus unto them again; Verily, verily I say
unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever
came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep
did not hear them. I am the door; by me if any man
enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out,
and find pasture. The thief cometh not but for to steal,

THE EPISTLE. Romans 12. 3.

B RETHREN: FOR I say, through the grace given

unto me, to every man that is among you, not to
think of himself more highly than he ought to think,
but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to
every man the measure of faith. For as we have many
members in one body, and all members have not the
same office; so we, being many, are one body in Christ,
and every one members one of another. Having then
gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us,
whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the
proportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on∗ our
ministering; or he that teacheth, on teaching; or he that
exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it
with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that
showeth mercy, with cheerfulness.
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that
which is evil, cleave to that which is good. Be kindly
affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in
honour preferring one another: not slothful in
business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in
hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in
prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to
hospitality.
Bless them which persecute you; bless, and curse
not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with
them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward
another. Mind not high things, but condescend to
men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things
honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as
much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

THE EPISTLE. Ephesians 4. 4.

B RETHREN: THERE is one body, and one Spirit,

even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father
of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
And unto every one of us is given grace, according to
the measure of the gift of Christ; wherefore it is said,
He ascended up on high, he led captivity captive,
He gave gifts unto men.
And when it is said, He ascended, what is it but that
he also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He
that descended is the same also that ascended up far
above all heavens, that he might fill all things. And he
gave some to b e Apostles; and some, Prophets; and
some, Evangelists; and some, Pastors and Teachers; for
the perfecting of the saints for the work of the
ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ; till
we all come, in the unity of the faith and of the
knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man,
unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.

JESUS said, Neither pray I for these alone, but for

them also that shall believe on me through their
word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in
me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us; that
the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the

they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and
thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and
that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and
hast loved them, even as thou hast loved me. Father, I
will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with
me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which
thou hast given me; for thou didst love me before the
foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world
hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and

THE LESSON. Acts 2. 22.

I N those days Peter opened his mouth and said, Ye

men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a
man attested by God among you by mighty works and
wonders and signs, which God did by him in the
midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being
delivered up by the determinate counsel and
foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked
hands have crucified and slain: Whom God raised up,
having loosed the pangs of death: because it was not
possible that he should be holden of it. For David
speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always
before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I
should not be moved: therefore did my heart rejoice,
and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall
rest in hope: because thou wilt not leave my soul in
Hades, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see
corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of
life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy
countenance.

THE GOSPEL. St. Luke 5. 17-26.

A T that time: It came to pass on a certain day, that

he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and
doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of
every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and
the power of the Lord was with him to heal. And,
behold, men brought on a bed a man which was taken
with palsy: and they sought means to bring him in,
and to lay him before him. And when they could not
find by what way they might bring him in because of
the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let
him down through the tiling with his couch into the
midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he
said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And
the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying,

P587
Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can
forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived
their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What
reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy
sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But
that ye may know that the Son of man hath power
upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the
palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch,
and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up
before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and
departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they
were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were
filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to

THE LESSON. Acts 13. 44-52.

T HE next sabbath day came almost the whole city

together to hear the word of God. But when the
Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy,
and spake against those things which were spoken by
Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and
Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that
the word of God should first have been spoken to you:
but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves
unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set
thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest
be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when
the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified

P590
the word of God: and as many as were ordained to
eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was
spread abroad throughout all the region. But the Jews
stirred up the devout and honourable women and the
chief men of the city, and raised persecution against
Paul and Barnabas, and cast them out of their borders.
But they shook off the dust of their feet against them,
and came unto Iconium. And the disciples were filled
with joy and with the Holy Ghost.

A T that time: Jesus arose out of the synagogue, and

rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she
arose and ministered unto them.
Now when the sun was setting, all they that had
any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him;
and he laid his hands on every one of them, and
healed them. And the devils also came out of many,
crying out, and saying, Thou art the Son of God. And
he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they
knew he was the Christ.
And when it was day, he departed and went into a

THE LESSON. Revelation 4. 1.

I N THOSE DAYS: I [John] saw, and behold, a door

was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I
heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me;
which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee
things which must be hereafter. And immediately I
was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was set in
heaven, and one sat on the throne: and he that sat was
to look upon like a jasper and a sardius stone: and a
rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an
emerald. And round about the throne four and twenty
seats; and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders
sitting, clothed in white raiment; and on their heads
crowns of gold: and out of the throne proceed
lightnings and thunderings and voices. And seven
lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the
seven spirits of God; and before the throne as it were a
sea of glass, like unto crystal; and in the midst of the
throne, and round about the throne, four living
creatures, full of eyes before and behind; the first one
like a lion, and the second like a calf, and the third
having a face like a man, and the fourth like a flying
eagle; and every one of them had six wings; around
and within they are full of eyes; and they rest not day
or night, saying,
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God the Almighty,
Which was, and which is, and which is to come.
And when those living beings give glory and honour
and thanks to him that sitteth upon the throne, who
liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall
down before him that sitteth upon the throne, and
worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast

THE GOSPEL. St John 3. 1.

T HERE was a man of the Pharisees, named

Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to
Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know
that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can
do these signs that thou doest, except God be with
him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily
I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot
see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him,
How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter
the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a
man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter
into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the
flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is
spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be
born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and
thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell
whence it cometh, and whither it goeth; so is every one

P596
that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and
said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus
answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of
Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily I
say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify
that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I
have told you earthly things, and ye believe not; how
shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And
no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came
down from heaven, even the Son of man, who is in
heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but

4 He telleth the number of the stars, / and calleth
them all by their names.
5 Great is our LORD , and great is his power: / yea,
and his wisdom is infinite.
6 The LO R D setteth up the meek, / and bringeth
the ungodly down to the ground.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, / and to
the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall
be, / world without end. Amen.
Ant. O PRAISE the LO R D , for it is a good thing to
sing praises unto our God: / yea, a joyful and pleasant
thing it is to be thankful.
THE COLLECT.

O GOD, who in a wonderful sacrament hast left

unto us a memorial of thy passion: grant us so to
reverence the holy mysteries of thy Body and Blood;
that we may ever know within ourselves the fruit of
thy redemption; who livest and reignest with the
Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world
without end. Amen.
THE EPISTLE. 1 Corinthians 11. 23.

B RETHREN, I have received of the Lord that which

also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus, the
same night in which he was betrayed, took bread; and
when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take,
eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do
in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he
took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is
the new covenant in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye
drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat
this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's
death till he come.

P599
Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, and
drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty
of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man
examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and
drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh
unworthily eateth and drinketh condemnation to
himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
GRADUAL

EG: Ps. 145.The eyes of all wait upon thee, O Lord: and
thou givest them their meat in due season. V. Thou
openest thy hand: and fillest all things living with
plenteousness. Alleluia, alleluia. V. St. John 6. My Flesh
is meat indeed, and my Blood is drink indeed: he that
eateth my Flesh and drinketh my Blood, dwelleth in
me, and I in him.
Then at once, without repetition of Alleluia, is sung the Sequence.

BCP: Ps. 147. PRAISE the L ORD , O Jerusalem: / praise

thy God, O Sion.
13 For he hath made fast the bars of thy gates, / and
hath blessed thy children within thee.
14 He maketh peace in thy borders, / and filleth thee
with the finest of the wheat.
Alleluia, Alleluia. He sendeth forth his commandment
upon earth; / and his word runneth very swiftly.
Then at once, without repetition of Alleluia, may be sung the
Sequence.

SEQUENCE.
Lauda Sion Salvatorem.

L AUD, O Sion, thy salvation, Laud with hymns of

exultation Christ, thy King and Shepherd true:
Spend thyself, his honour raising, Who surpasseth all
thy praising; Never canst thou reach his due.
Sing today the mystery showing Of the living, life
bestowing Bread from heaven before thee set;

P600
E'en the same of old provided, When the Twelve,
divinely guided, At the holy Table met.
Full and clear ring out thy chanting, Joy nor sweetest
grace be wanting To thy heart and soul today.
When we gather up the measure Of that Supper and
its treasure, Keeping feast in glad array.
Lo, the new King's Table gracing, This new Passover of
blessing Hath fulfill'd the elder rite;
Now the new the old effaceth, Truth reveal'd the
shadow chaseth, Day is breaking on the night.
What he did at Supper seated, Christ ordain'd to be
repeated, His memorial ne'er to cease:
And, his word for guidance taking, Bread and wine we
hallow, making Thus our Sacrifice of peace.
This the truth to Christians given, Bread becomes his
Flesh from heaven, Wine becomes his holy Blood.
Doth it pass thy comprehending? Yet by faith, thy
sight transcending, Wondrous things are
understood.
Yea, beneath these signs are hidden Glorious things to
sight forbidden; Look not on the outward sign.
Wine is pour'd and Bread is broken, But in either
sacred token Christ is here by power divine.
Whoso of this Food partaketh, Rendeth not the Lord
nor breaketh: Christ is whole to all that taste.
Thousands are, as one, receivers; One, as thousands of
believers, Takes the Food that cannot waste.
Good and evil men are sharing One repast, a doom
preparing Varied as the heart of man;
Doom of life or death awarded, As their days shall be
recorded Which from one beginning ran.
When the Sacrament is broken, Doubt not in each
sever'd token, Hallow'd by the word once spoken,
Resteth all the true content.
Nought the precious Gift divideth, Breaking but the
sign betideth, He himself the same abideth, Nothing
of his fullness spent.

P601
Lo! the Angels' Food is given To the pilgrim who hath
striven; See the children's Bread from heaven, Which
to dogs may not be cast;
Truth the ancient types fulfilling, Isaac bound, a victim
willing, Paschal lamb, its life-blood spilling, Manna
sent in ages past.
Very Bread, good Shepherd, tend us, Jesu, of thy love
befriend us, Thou refresh us, thou defend us, Thine
eternal goodness send us In the Land of life to see;
Thou who all things canst and knowest, Who on earth
such food bestowest, Grant us with thy Saints,
though lowest, Where the heav'nly Feast thou
showest, Fellow-heirs and guests to be.
Amen, Alleluia.
THE GOSPEL. St John 6. 27.

JESUS said, Labour not for the meat which perisheth,

but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting
life, which the Son of Man shall give unto you: for him
hath God the Father sealed. Then said they unto him,
What shall we do, that we might work the works of
God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the
work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath
sent. They said therefore unto him, What sign showest
thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what
dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the
desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from
heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily,
verily I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread
from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread
from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh
down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this
bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of
life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he
that believeth on me shall never thirst.
Creed is said.

P602
OFFERTORY. The priests of the Lord do offer the
offerings of the Lord, made by fire and the bread of
their God: therefore they shall be holy unto their God,
and not profane the Name of their God, alleluia.
SECRET

W E beseech thee, O Lord: that like as we in these

our oblations do show forth in a mystery the
unity and concord of thy Church; so thou wouldest
ever mercifully bestow upon her these thy blessings;
through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and
reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost,
ever one God, world without end. Amen.
Preface of Maundy Thursday and Corpus Christi.

COMMUNION. As often as ye do eat of this Bread, and

drink this Cup: ye do show the Lord's death till he
come. Wherefore, whosoever shall eat of this Bread,
and drink of this Cup of the Lord unworthily: shall be
guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord, alleluia.
POSTCOMMUNION

G RANT, we beseech thee, O Lord: that we who in

these outward tokens have been made partakers
of thy most precious Body and Blood; may after this
life be replenished with the fruition of thy glorious
Godhead; who livest and reignest with the Father, in
the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world
without end. Amen.
