“Gone - Almost”
Isn’t it amazing how torrential rain and mild temperatures
can destroy twenty feet of snow in just one week!! There are
times, when the missus is annoyed with me, that I wish I could
disappear that fast!! While it is a little early to declare winter
over, it is very unlikely that the snow banks will grow back to
their recent size.
With spring near at hand, I am already working on developing
some project ideas for when the ground is dry. Now I don’t
mind sharing these ideas, but you have to agree to keep them
confidential from “old you know who”!!
Speaking of “you know who”, the first step in going ahead with
my projects is convincing the missus to sell off all her jewels
and at least one half of her wardrobe in order to fund my little
dreams?? This project alone may take me most of the spring and
summer!! Once I have the cash in hand, my first project is to
create a better home for my newest to me tractor. When I first
built my storage shed, my only tractor had no cab and the design
worked just fine and dandy. But, last year I purchased my 1980
tractor with a cab, and there is some difficulty getting it to fit
nicely.
Now most of you guys would just play around trying to get
some extra clearance by jacking the front entry up a little higher.
And that’s why, of course, you guys will never go far in this world,
because you have to think BIG. Now … I am thinking about …
new garage around 30 by 60 feet with a 10 foot high doorway,
which should give me enough room to work with. Oops, what
if my dream excavator went on sale ($99.00 plus HST)?? Let’s
make that doorway at least 12 feet high. See how easy it is to
think BIG?? Come on you can do it!! At least until the missus
catches on.
A careful review also indicates the need for a better backup
tractor. My original tractor is almost 50 years old, and while it
works OK, I consider it to be unsuited for snow blowing with
no cab. So the entire population of Burnside Lane is relying on
one tractor, that is over 30 years old, for snow removal. Would
your community be happy if you had to rely on one old vehicle
for all of your snow removal needs?? I think not!! (See how this
works guys??)
Since I am running out of space, I need to cut this off, but I wish
everyone the best of luck with your BIG project!! 800

K V Woodworkers Club
The KV Woodworkers Club is a non-profit organization
operating from Rothesay High School.
Happenings: The bench project is nearing completion. Thanks
to the many club members who have been diligently working
on this fundraising project. Brian Chapman has accepted
responsibility for a project for Rothesay High School math
department. He is making a number of different 3D geometric
to aid in teaching measuring surface area and volume. Some
other projects in the shop include kayak paddles, cabinets,
clocks, turned bowls, bedside tables, and picture frames.
This week’s Tip From Chips: Improve your finishes by raising the
grain. When you sand wood, the sharp corners of the sanding
particles, often tear the wood fibres and push them over, rather
than cutting them cleanly. The wood feels smooth, until the
fibres are wet, and then the bent fibres stand clear and the once
smooth surface now feels rough. To get the best finish; after
sanding, dampen the surface with a water damp cloth, let the
wood dry and then, lightly sand with your finest grit paper
previously used. Remember to sand lightly; we only want to
cut the fibres that were not previously cut cleanly. Take care to
remove all wood dust and you are ready to apply your desired
finish.
About Our Club: Members have access to the school shop
facilities 24/7. New members are welcome. Annual fees are $220.
For more information, call Jim at 849-3794, Pat at 849-0400,
or see Bob or Larry at the shop (1st door on the right from the
East side entrance to the school, across from Rothesay arena)
on Tuesday and Thursday, mornings & evenings, or Saturday
mornings. See you in the shop.

Big Rothesay read selection
announced
The “Buzz” is all about town in Rothesay.
The tightly guarded secret has been
revealed. Those not in “the know” will
soon doubtlessly be compelled to find
out why the word “Jerk” is displayed
in bold letters on posters, banners,
and tattoos all over town. With the
provocative title of Jerk, California by Jonathan Friesen, this
year’s book selection for The Big Rothesay Read is bound to
incite discussion in the community and get high school students,
parents, and the public interested in reading.
“We are so excited to announce this book”, said Mary Ann
Gallagher, Event Chair. Jerk, California is about a young man
living with Tourette Syndrome, and the challenges facing a
teenager who is perceived as “different”. “It’s a wonderful story,
beautifully written,” says Ms. Gallagher. “There will definitely be
a lot to talk about, and I think it will get some great dialogue going
between high school kids and their parents, peers, and teachers.”
The author, Jonathan Friesen, who himself has Tourette’s, “is so
excited to be invited to come speak about his book and his own
experiences”, says Ms. Gallagher. “He is very impressed with the
idea of our big community read, and absolutely thrilled that we
have chosen to read his book.”
Also for the first time this year, any groups, businesses or
book clubs participating in The Big Rothesay Read are invited
to enter their name for a prize draw sponsored by Java Moose
– the winning group will attend a private coffee party with the
author himself when he comes to town on April 28th! Contact
Benjamin’s Books for details on the draw and how you may enter
your group to win: benbooks@nbnet.nb.ca.
Many more exciting events planned over the next six weeks
surrounding the book Jerk, California include: Book Club at
the Library – Tuesday, April 12th at 7:00 pm, Screening of the
documentary “Life’s a Twitch”; Lunch and Listen – Tuesday, April
19th at 12:00noon, Shadow Lawn Inn with mother & son guest
speakers discussing “Raising a child with Tourette Syndrome”;
Walk and Talk – Wednesday, April 20th at 12:00 noon, leaving
from RHS - take a stroll while chatting about various discussion
points in the book. 221

Fundy paddlers
The Fundy Paddlers Club has been formed in the greater
Saint John Area. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting and offering opportunities for safe paddling for
people of all ages. We meet to organize outings and promote
training in all forms of paddling, be it canoeing/kayak or
poling on flat or moving water. This is a family oriented club
that discourages consumption of alcoholic beverages during
outings. We believe in working to restore waterways, which
have become littered or polluted.
Persons of all disciplines and skill levels are welcome to
join. Members are given access to training from
certified instructors. The club provides a form to
exchange ideas and information for persons with
similar interests in this sport.
The club, founded in 2008, is looking for
members. The benefits of membership also include
a direct say in its goals and direction, as everyone’s
opinion is important. Members are covered under
an insurance policy while participating in outings
and discounts from selected stores and outfitters
are passed along. As the club grows more outings,
training and opportunities to purchase equipment
for member use could be realized.

HRAA News
Fish ‘n Jam: Fish ‘n Jam is back to a regular
schedule, each Wednesday at 7:00pm. Hope to
see everyone out!
Warning to local anglers and boaters: HRAA’s
popular and frequently-used boat launch was
damaged during the high water March 12th and
is not usable. There is a major drop, enough that
it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to launch from this
spot. With the season opening on April 15th, we wanted to be
sure all local anglers are aware that the launch is not functioning
at this point. And, we may need to apply for a WAWA permit to
fix the landing, meaning that the repairs may need to wait until
June 1st. Its one of our priorities to have the landing back in
operation as soon as possible.
News from the Riverbank: The Hammond ice ran on March
12th, with the water peaking at about 4 meters at our water level
monitor. However, the levels dropped very quickly. Amazingly,
ducks were appearing on Saturday, even as the ice was breaking
up!
Remember that angling season opens April 15th on rivers, and
May 1st on lakes in this part of the province. As usual, we ask
all anglers to exercise caution when fishing in the lower part of
the Hammond in April, since our black salmon (kelts) will still
be in the river. They are voracious at that time of year, and are
very susceptible to injury or death if angled improperly. And, of
course, the Hammond is closed for all salmon fishing, including
black salmon. If you do fish the lower river, we strongly urge that
you use single, barbless hooks so that the salmon can be released
unharmed if you do happen to hook one while angling for other
species. And, our friends in enforcement keep a close eye on all
angling activity when the salmon are in the river.
Annual Anglers Draw tickets available now: Tickets are $10 each
or three for $20. You can get your tickets from Jim Gillespie,
or contact the centre at 832-1230. Draw date is planned for a
Coffeehouse on Saturday, April 23rd.
Kayak Fishing Tournament: July 16th & 17th. The new regulations
for the tournament are now available in the downloads section
of our website.

Wish Presentation
Jordan Malachi Ray is an 11 year old boy with Osteosarcoma
bone cancer who has had three lung surgeries, multiple
treatments of chemotherapy & radiation as well as having a bone
replacement yet maintains a positive attitude and speaks of his
desire to become a doctor.
The volunteers from Workers4Wishes met Malachi and his
family to help grant a wish to travel to Florida on March break.
However, health problems made the travel impossible so the new
wish saw the family stay at the Hilton in Saint John, the Marriott
Hotel in Moncton and Crystal Palace for a ten day vacation.
Gift cards for all their food, gas, museum visits, coffee spots, his
favourite pizza place as well as spending money were presented
to the family. Matching gift cards for ToysRus, E-B Games and
wireless headphones were presented to both Malachi and his
older brother Nathan plus a remote control helicopter, a new 32”
LCD TV and hide-a-bed sofa with pillows, sheets and blankets
awaits Malachi’s return home.
Malachi’s mother Jocelyn said she is looking forward to these
days in between treatments “that don’t belong to cancer, they
belong to family.” Jocelyn thanked the group for their hard work,
Malachi’s brother Nathan for always being there and Malachi
himself for being her “HERO”.
Spokesman Eamon Clarke said thanks to the Hilton, Marriott
and Cox’s Electronics for assisting with this wish and special
thanks to the Pipefitters Union Local 213, the Carpenters &
Millwrights Local 1386 and the International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers Union Local 502 that donated $3,000 between
them to make this wish viable from the start. Also thanks to the
Boys & Girls Club of Saint John and employees at the Irving Oil
Refinery that did special fundraisers for this event.

Cheeky!
I love to read. In fact I will read most anything. As a kid I was
sometimes reduced to reading the backs of cereal boxes at the
breakfast table if nothing else was available, but that’s another
story. Recently I was doing some reading on Sir Richard Branson.
You know the guy, multi-billionaire British entrepreneur known
for his “colourful” promotion of his Virgin brand. I stumbled
upon an ad campaign run for Virgin Atlantic Airlines when
they launched a form of Japanese massage known as shiatsu
for their first class passengers. Virgin Atlantic was up against
long established British Airways, fighting for market share. The
Virgin ad campaign was starkly simple: “BA don’t give a shiatsu”.
Now does that grab your attention or what!
Cheeky appeals to me. A little saucy, but with a glint in the
eye and a twitch of the lips, no offense intended. A touch of
humour to brighten the day and lift the spirit. I have never
studied marketing, I have no business degree, and I know the
pundits will tell you to stay away from humour in advertising
as you are bound to offend someone. Well, there is danger and
risk in everything. I could walk out of my door and be hit by a
bus tomorrow. Okay, maybe not a bus. In my case it would more
likely be Mikie’s tractor or the corporate Jet that knocks me flat,
but you get my drift. Taking a risk to follow a dream is far better
than looking back at age 85 and wishing you had done things
differently. Lighten up, chillax, let a little fun in.
Businesses are living entities too, and each has a personality
of its own. Since the initial hiring at Ossekeag was mine and
cheeky appeals to me, don’t be surprised if you find that to be
one of our company personality traits. Watch for that gleam in
the eye and enjoy life with us. And since I am writing this on St
Patrick’s Day, I will end with an Irish blessing: “May the Good
Lord take a liking to you ... but not too soon!” 801
