Applicants must meet the criteria set by other faculties for their chosen academic
subjects and an APS of 24 or 25. All additional criteria for specific learning area
specialisations, and/or specific subject methodologies have to be met as well.

In order to gain admission to the University of Johannesburg for the BEd Foundation
Phase, BEd Senior Phase or BEd Further Education and Training School Phase, you have
to be in possession of a matriculation exemption or conditional matriculation exemption
and at least a D symbol on higher grade or a C symbol on standard grade in the
preferred language of teaching. A minimum M score of 10 is expected.

1.2 What about bursaries?


The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme for Teachers enables students of high academic
promise and commitment to undertake initial professional education for teaching and
upon qualification to enter the service of provincial departments of education. The
bursaries are designed to help meet the national need for high calibre teachers in
priority areas.

The priority areas are as follows


• Grade R-9: African Languages, English Language, Mathematics, Natural Sciences,
Technology.
• Grade 8-12: African Languages, English Language, Mathematics, Mathematical
Literacy, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Computer Applications Technology (CAT).

The bursary will cover the registration fee, tuition fee, book allowance, travel allowance,
residence fee or approved accommodation and meal costs.
Students who are awarded Funza Lushaka bursaries will be required to commit
themselves upon qualification to teach in public schools in terms of a service contract
that will form part of the bursary agreement.
Besides the usual merit bursaries of the University, the Faculty of Education also offers
bursaries to students performing well in their studies.

1.10 How much is the programme fee?


Tuition fees are determined annually per programme. The fee structures for 2011 have
not yet been finalised. Please contact the Faculty of Education at 011 559 3428 later in
the year. The cost of an average undergraduate programme was R17 000.00 in 2010.

ABOUT THE POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE
IN EDUCATION
(PGCE)

2.1 Admission Requirements


The minimum requirement for access to the PGCE is an appropriate 360 or 480 credit
degree (other than the Bachelor of Education (BEd)) at NQF level 6.
OR
A National Diploma at level six, including subjects that satisfy the current requirements
for employment as a school educator.

2.2 Career opportunities


The purpose of this qualification is to equip graduate candidates with knowledge, skills
and values to teach effectively, either as:
Learning Area Specialists in the Senior Phase (Grade 7-9)
OR
School Subject Specialists in the Further Education and Training School Phase
(Grade 10-12):
Candidates who have successfully completed the PGCE programme,
will qualify for:
• registration as educators in schools;
• employment in public and private schools;
• further study in their area of specialisation and/or in postgraduate education (e.g.
BEd Hons).

2.3 Specialisation – Senior Phase (Grade 7-9)


This qualification will enable you to become a Learning Area Specialist in the Senior
Phase (Grade 7-9).

Additional Selection Criteria:
1. SCHOOL MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP:
The target audience is qualified educators who:
• Are either members of the management team of the school or ECD/ABET centres
who are either not suitable qualified as managers or are qualified inappropriately.
• Are heads of department or subject /phase/learning area leaders who would like to
become principals/deputy principals, or would like to follow the education specialist
career path.
2. PHYSICAL SCIENCES EDUCATION:
A school-leaving certificate with Mathematics and Science (old curriculum) or Physical
Sciences (NCS) at standard grade and a recognised three-year education diploma at
(M+3 or REQV13).
3. INCLUSIVE EDUCATION:
Students who apply for Inclusive Education, should  already be in possession of a 480
credit level 6 qualification or equivalent.
4. MATHEMATICS EDUCATION:
A school leaving certificate with Mathematics at Standard Grade plus a recognised
Education Diploma, including the NPDE, at NQF Level 5 (M+3, or REQV13).
Mathematics for Teachers (FET School Phase): The programme is aimed for grade 10,
11, 12 Mathematics teachers who wish to enrich their knowledge in the content of the
curriculum.

Mathematics for teachers (Senior Phase): The programme is aimed for grade 7, 8, 9
and 10 Mathematics teachers who wish to enrich their knowledge in the content of the
curriculum.

3.3 Documentation needed for application


• A non-refundable application fee of R270.00.
• Certified copies of tertiary qualifications and academic records.
• Two certified identity photographs.
• Two certified copies of your identity document.
• A certified copy of your school-leaving certificate.
• A certificate of conduct from the last tertiary institution at which you were enrolled.

3.4 Mode of delivery


• The Advanced Certificates are offered through a flexible mode of delivery on
selected Saturdays, and on the selected campuses.
• The contact sessions are compulsory.
• The Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) is accredited by the Department of
Education: NQF level 6.

3.5 Further career opportunities


After completion of the ACE programme, students will have the option of enrolling for
the BEd Hons programmes, if a minimum of 65% aggregate has been obtained for the
ACE programme.

The following two BEd Honours programmes are on offer in

4.1 Programme 1
BEd Honours with specialisations
4.1.1 Admission requirements
In order to be admitted to the programme, you need to meet at least one of the
following requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree plus a teacher’s diploma/certificate (at least 480 credits at level 6)
including Education 3.
• A four-year Bachelor’s degree, including teacher training (e.g. BA(Ed) or BEd) (at least
480 credits at level 6).
• A recognized teacher’s diploma/certificate or diploma/certificate equivalent to a four-
year teacher’s diploma (at least 480 credits at level 6).
• A recognized teacher’s diploma/certificate and a three-year National Technical
Certificate (T3) (at least 480 credits at level 6) or an equivalent thereof.
In addition to the above, you also need to meet the following requirements:
Students should provide proof of relevant academic competence, namely 65% average
in the majors of a prior degree, or in the case of a diploma a 65% average for all the
subjects/modules.
Educational Linguistics: at least one modern language at second year level.
Technology Education: Technical qualifications, 120 credits at level 6.

This programme is offered on a part-time basis over a period of two years on the
Auckland Park Kingsway Campus.
Students who wish to do the programme on a part-time basis will attend 10 contact
sessions per year on Saturdays from 08:30 – 16:00.

4.2 Programme 2 - BEd Honours Educational


Psychology
4.2.1 Admission
In order to be admitted to the programme, you need to meet the same requirements as
stated above. You also need to meet the following requirements:
• Psychology 3 and Education 3.
Candidates who apply for this degree will undergo a selection process that is based on
previous academic achievement, personal skills, interpersonal skills, the ability to work in
a team and the potential to learn the necessary skills to become an effective counsellor.

In the School Counsellor Practicum, students are required to complete an approved


minimum six months of practicum, which is supervised by the University as stipulated
by the Board for Psychology. After completion of the practicum and after the degree

BEd Hons: R12 600.00 – R13 800.00. Fees may vary depending on the composition of the

Specific criteria apply to the MEd in Educational Psychology


A prospective student must hold a BEd Hons Educational/Psychology degree with an
average and at least 65% along with a BEd teaching degree or a PGCE. An Honours
degree in Psychology will be considered, provided the student completes at least three
outstanding modules relevant to the Master’s degree on a BEd Honours level.

How do I finance my postgraduate studies?
If studying is a question of finance, then Edu-Loan has the answer! If you qualify, you can
repay your study fees over 10 months at a low interest rate.
• The University of Johannesburg has an agreement with Edu-Loan to provide financial
assistance to students (only postgraduate and ACE programmes).
• All full-time government employees (teachers, nurses, etc.) and their dependants
qualify for the Edu-Loan facility. You can apply for financial assistance by contacting
