LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION: VOLUME OF A GIVEN


CUBE USING CU.CM AND CU.M.

What is it

A cube is a solid box whose every surface is a square of same area.Take an empty box
with open top in the shape of a cube whose each edge is 2 cm. Now fit cubes of edges 1 cm in it.
From the figure it is clear that 8 such cubes will fit in it. So the volume of the box will be equal
to the volume of 8 unit cubes together.Therefore, the volume of the cube = 8 cu cmNote that 8 =
2 × 2 × 2Thus, volume of a cube = side × side × side = side 3 Hence, a cube has:(i) six surfaces or
faces,(ii) 8 vertices,(iii) 12 edges or sides of equal length.

Since a cube has all sides equal.


Volume of a cube = (side × side × side) cubic units.
= 1 × 1 × 1 cubic units Since area = side × side Volume of a cube = (area × side) cubic
units.Solved examples on volume of a cube:
1. Example .Find the volume of a cube whose edge is 5 cm long. The length of an edge = 5
cm Volume of a cube = side of edge × side of edge × side of edge Volume of a cube = 5
cm × 5 cm × 5 cm = 125 cu cm = 125 cm3
2. Example ,Find the volume of water that can be contained in a cubical container each of
whose edge measure 2 m internally.The internal length of an edge of the container = 2 m
The internal volume of the container = 2 m × 2 m × 2 m = 8 cu m.The volume of water
that the container can hold = the internal volume of the container.Therefore, the required
volume of water = 8 cu m.
The formula of finding the Volume of a cube is S X S X S or S3

LESSON 2 : Finding the Volume of a given Rectangular


Prism Using cu.cm. and cu.m.

What is it

Volume is measured in cubes (or cubic units).How many cubes are in this rectangular
prism (cuboid)?We can count the cubes although it is quicker to take the length, width, and
height and use multiplication. The rectangular prism above has a volume of 48 cubic units.
A rectangular prism is a 3D figure with 6 rectangular faces. To find the volume of a
rectangular prism, multiply its 3 dimensions: length x width x height. The volume is
expressed in cubic units.
 Here’s an example of calculating the volume of rectangular prism
Volume = Length x Width x Height

Volume = 12 cm x 8 cm x 6 cm
= 576 cm3

Volume = Length x Width x Height

Volume = 20 m x 2 m x 2 m
= 80 m3

Volume = Length x Width x Height

Volume = 10 m x 4 m x 5 m
= 200 m3

Another example.We need to do two multiplications to work out the volume. We calculate
the area of one face (or side) and multiply that by its height. The examples below show
how there are three ways of doing this.
Area = 6 x 4 = 24

Volume = Area x 2

Volume = 24 x 2 = 48 cubic units

Area = 6 x 2 = 12

Volume = Area x 4

Volume = 12 x 4 = 48 cubic units

Area = 4 x 2 = 8

Volume = Area x 6

Volume = 8 x 6 = 48 cubic units

LESSON 3: ESTIMATING AND USING APPROPRIATE


UNITS OF MEASURE FOR VOLUME

What is it

Volume is the number of cubic units contained in a solid figure.It is the amountbof space
figure and measured in cubic units. To find the volume of an object means to find the number of
cubic units it contains or holds. It is the quantity of three-dimensional space enclosed by
a closed surface, for example, the space that a substance (solid, liquid, gas or shape occupies or
contains.[1] Volume is often quantified numerically using the cubic metre. The volume of a
container is generally understood to be the capacity of the container; i. e., the amount
of fluid (gas or liquid) that the container could hold, rather than the amount of space the
container itself displaces.
Any unit of length gives a corresponding unit of volume: the volume of a cube whose sides
have the given length. For example, a cubic centimetre (cm3) is the volume of a cube whose
sides are one centimetre (1 cm) in length.
The standard unit of volume is the cubic metre (m3). The metric system also includes
the litre (L) as a unit of volume, where one litre is the volume of a 10-centimetre cube. Thus
1 litre = (10 cm)3 = 1000 cubic centimetres = 0.001 cubic metres,so
1 cubic metre = 1000 litres.Small amounts of liquid are often measured in millilitres,
where 1 millilitre = 0.001 litres = 1 cubic centimetre.
Another example: convert 8dm3 to cm3 .In the metric coverter, move 1 space to the right
,from dm to cm.Move the decimal point 3 places to the right .(Multiply 3 by the number of
spaces moved in the metric converter.) 8.000 dm3 = 8000cm3 So 8dm3 = 8000 cm3..
Convert 35000cm3 to m3 In the metric converter,move 2 spaces to the left from cm to
m.Move the decimal point 6 places to the left

So, 35000cm3 = 0.035 m3
