164 was in 1945, six years after his arrival in Mexico,
when Candela concentrated on their study
and structural analysis. At this time, Candela
became interested not only in the German
studies published on the subject, but also in the
work done by the Danes K.W. Johansen and H.
Lundgren.
The Danish engineer Knud Winstrup Johansen
published an article (Fig. 8) in 1944 in which a
real long cylindrical shell was analysed for the
first time. It was part of the restaurant in the
General Broadcasting Corporation building, and
was based on purely geometrical aspects (Fig. 9).
These studies, begun by Johansen, were
developed some years later by his fellow 5
Danish engineer Hegel Lundgren. In 1949, he
formulated a theory for application, which was
practical, clear and simple, based on obtaining
states of equilibrium in a long cylindrical shell
using its geometry (Fig. 10).
The theory formulated by Johansen and
subsequently developed by Lundgren was
studied and applied by Félix Candela in his
structural analysis of long cylindrical roof
shells. Years later, Antonio Tonda Magallón,
a follower and collaborator of Candela, would
disseminate this theory in Spanish with the
publication of his book in 1973 (Fig. 11).
Based on a study of these writings, Candela
analysed long cylindrical shells using a simple
method of equilibrium, obtained from the
geometry of the structure itself.
From a universal point of view, the determining 6
factor in the choice of a structural form or
geometry is the real state of the analytical
technique that must be used in the preliminary
investigation or analysis of the structure. For
this reason, Candela decided that analysing and
executing these geometries would determine
whether what had previously been written about
them was true or not.
He thereby succeeded in calculating and
executing his first long cylindrical shell for the
roof of the Almacén Pisa in 1951 (Fig.12).
As Candela described it, the method consists
of likening the shell’s behaviour to that of a
reinforced concrete beam (Fig. 13), for which the
calculation process consists of:
Longitudinal calculation

The state of equilibrium in the shell is achieved
by transferring the stress from the areas under
most strain to the areas under least strain; this all
depends on the transverse geometry of the shell,
