InterAction calls for Libya to allow humanitarian access

On March 1, 2011, InterAction, the United States largest international non governmental
organization called on Libya to allow humanitarian access into the tumultuous land. InterAction
has more than 190 members and the group is the largest based in the United States that
focuses on providing humanitarian assistance to those worldwide who are poor and in need.
Libya has undergone a series of demonstrations as protestors are demanding the resignation of
Moammar Gadhafi.

InterAction President, Samuel Worthington released a statement regarding the plea to Libya,
“We appeal to the Libyan authorities to allow safe passage of humanitarian supplies and
workers into Libya if that is needed. We also urge neighboring countries Egypt, Tunisia and
Niger to continue doing all they can to help those migrant workers and civilians who have fled
Libya.”

Samuel Worthington also spoke of the reports of casualties and the growing death toll. It is
unclear, at this point, how many have lost their lives since the protest began as well as the lack
of clear information showing the full extent of the crisis.

“Reports of civilian deaths and injuries inside Libya are alarming and we urge all sides to
respect human rights and not use excessive force. African migrants are a particularly vulnerable
group in the conflict,” he said.
