Park It Here
Mariners’ Wharf Park, in the heart of downtown
Elizabeth City, is gaining steam as a community gathering
spot. The Mariners’ Wharf Film Festival shows a classic film
every Tuesday evening throughout June and July. Past
movies have included All the King’s Men, An American
in Paris and Some Like It Hot. Meanwhile, Music on the
Green at Mariners’ Wharf Park showcases free concerts
along the park’s expansive waterfront. The shows begin
in early August and continue for eight consecutive
Tuesday evenings through September.

Elizabeth City’s colleges grow, expand

Story By Kevin Litwin

T
he three major colleges in Elizabeth City have
good news, with a big emphasis on new.
New developments at College of The Albemarle,
Elizabeth City State University and Mid-Atlantic
Christian University have positioned Elizabeth City for the
future. College of The Albemarle even has a new president –
Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer – who took office in April 2010.
Serving, Expanding, and Celebrating
College of The Albemarle (COA) continues to see record
enrollment as northeastern NC’s comprehensive community
college that residents rely on for an affordable, high quality
education. The college offers over 30 programs of study in
college transfer preparedness and technical education programs.
the college is also committed to workforce development and
is expanding thanks to two Golden LEAF grants totaling
$830,000. COA is able to fully implement its Aviation Sheet
Metal Worker Training Program and develop key training
modules. Modules will be offered in avionics, mechanical,
electrical, electronics, sheet metal, and composites. These
modules form an initial foundation that will lead to full
implementation of an FAA certified Airframe and
Power Plant Training program in the future.
The college is also commemorating a milestone. “College of

From Our Photo Blog:

Elizabeth City
The Intercoastal Waterway,
which runs 3,000 miles along
the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the
United States, is a popular voyage
for pleasure craft from around the
world. And Elizabeth City, North
Carolina, known as the Harbor
of Hospitality, is a favorite stop
along the way. Mariners’ Wharf
Park in Elizabeth City offers free
mornings for boats staying 48
hours and has free Wi-Fi Internet
access. In addition to these
amenities, Elizabeth City has
dozens of restaurants, shops and
museums within walking distance
of docks of Mariners’ Wharf Park.
