Animal Death Record

Talley Road Facility

March 16, 2010 (Tuesday)

Name: MUNCHEE Sex: Female (Intact)

Species (Common): Long-tailed Macaque Species (Taxonomic): Macaca fascicularis
Age: 6 years old (DOB: June 25, 2003) Weight: ~7 lbs

History:
• Munchee was one of the long-tailed macaques born in this troop.
• She was found on Tuesday morning. She was by the door of the heated lock-out area. What remained
of her arm was outside the wall, and the muscle of her arm had been eaten by something, probably a
raccoon, as a pig or coyote would most likely have removed the arm.
• After the monkeys were locked out of the heated area, we went in and found Munchee on her back
with her arm through the wall. Her face was smashed against the fencing and her right side had also
been partially eaten.
• She was removed to be examined out of the enclosure.
• There were small fly eggs on her and she was past rigor mortis. She had been dead at least 24 hours
but not more than 48 as she had been seen alive and well on Sunday.
• I believe that she was in the process of giving birth when she died. She was dilated and the baby was
in position.

Previous Medical Problems:

• Only problem she ever had occurred when she was a little over a year old and she got a grommet
stuck in her cheek pouch. We had to sedate her to be able to remove it.

Findings During Post-Mortem Exam:

• Head: indented where she had been pulled against the wire
• Ears: no problems noted
• Face: abrasions on face, indented where it had been pulled up against the wire of the wall; some blood
on face also (around right side of nose, mouth and eyes)
• Eyes: Closed, slightly bulging
• Mouth: teeth appeared to be in good condition; bloody froth around mouth; right side of mouth had
been pressed against the wire
• Chest: In good flesh, not thin or fat. Right side of chest was missing skin and muscle, ribcage was
exposed. Tissue was black.
• Abdomen: distended: partially from gas build-up. Also, on physical exam, found that she was very
pregnant. The baby was pointed down and ready to be born or in the process of being born when she
died.
• Ano-Genital Area: Vagina was dilated to about 1 inch.
• Arms/Hands: right arm had been mostly eaten to the shoulder and right side of the chest. Her
shoulder was dislocated. Her right hand was mostly intact. The left arm and hand were intact, no bites
noted.
• Legs/Feet: no bites noted on either leg or foot.
• Tail: no problems
• Tattoos: none – was born at Talley

NOTE: After the examination, Munchee’s body was double-bagged and then place in the deep
freeze located in the ante-room of the HIV chimp’s building.
