HEAT, ENERGY AND MASS BALANCE

Purpose:
1. Helps design engineer to decide piping sizes.
2. To estimate heat release or heat needed in system.
3. Optimize heat balance.
4. For general knowledge.
5. Decide upon optimal IGV opening.

Mass balance:

FEED + STEAM = DISTILLATE + BLOWDOWN + VENT

Energy balance:

COMPRESSOR ELECTRICAL + PUMP ELECTRICAL + FEED TEMPERATURE +

STEAM TEMPERATURE + SUN = DISTILLATE TEMPERATURE + BRINE
TEMPERATURE + VENT TEMPERATURE + INSULATION LOSSES

Concentration Factor = feed/ Brine Blowdown

One pound steam through vapor compressor produces 2 pounds of distillate.

i.e. at any given operating condition both evaporators produce equal amount of
distillate.

Effects of increasing IGV opening:

- discharge pressure goes up Q= uA∆T
- uA is same so ∆T changes
- so the pressure goes up
- operning IGV adds energy but net effect is- more energy going out and pressure
going down.

Suction pressure maintaining:

- compressor suction LOW pressure shutdown set to 13.8 psia
- to keep from pulling in air (non condensable)
- keep velocities down and reduce liquid carry-over
- to bring suction pressure back – add makeup steam.
