REPORTING STATEMENTS:
Report what other people said or using the so called reported speech is what we do everyday.
When the reporting verb is in the past (said, told, declared, exclaimed…), there are some changes you must do:

A. Complete the sentences using the reported speech structure/rules.


1. “I went to the theatre with my parents yesterday night.”,

REPORTING QUESTIONS:
There are different rules and there are three types of questions:

YES/NO ANSWERS:
 use the word if or whether (which is the equivalent to if);
 change the word order.

E.g. “Are you enjoying yourself?”, Susan asked Patty. (Verb + subject + object)
Susan wanted to know if (=whether) Patty (she) was enjoying herself. (subject + verb +
object)

“WH” QUESTIONS:
 change the word order.

E.g. “Why are you so late?”, she asked Michael. (QW + verb + subject + time expression)
She asked Michael why he was so late. ( QW + subject + verb + time expression)
“POLITE” QUESTIONS:
 use the structure of the reported questions, but maintain the verb tense used in the question:
Can you tell me/ Do you know/ Do you remember/ Do you have any idea +
question word or if/whether (for yes/no answers) + subject + verb + object.

E.g. “Why do people turn into shopaholics?”(QW + aux. verb + subject + main verb + object)
Michael, do you have any idea why people turn into shopaholics?
( QW + subject + verb + object)

B. Report the following questions.


1. “Did you see Martin last week?”, Jason wondered.
