Read And Write Whole Numbers


Whole numbers consist of natural numbers and 0.
Whole numbers are 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and so on
The number system which we use today is called the
Hindu-Arabic number system. This system uses ten basic
symbols to represent numbers. These symbols can be
written in words and figures are shown below:

These ten figures are known as digits. With these ten


digits, we can right any whole numbers.
Place Value and Value of Each Digit
In our number system, each digit of a number has a place
value. The value of each digit depends on where the digit
is in that number.
For example, what is the place value of each digit in 716?

Therefore, the place value of 6 is units, 1 is tens and 7 is


hundreds.
Rounding Off Whole Numbers
When rounding off a number to a certain place value,
follow the steps below.
1. Look at the digit to the right of the place value to be
rounded off.
2. If the digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit at the place
value to be rounded off and change all the right digits to
zero. And if the digit is less than 5, leave the digit at the
place value to be rounded off unchanged. Change the left
digit to zero

Round of 941 572 to the nearest ten
Solution > (a) 941 572 = 941 570 (to the nearest ten)

Addition and Subtraction
Addition
Addition is the process of putting two or more numbers
together and finding its sums. Add, sum, plus and total
are the words we used in addition
Example:

Subtraction
Subtraction is the process of finding the difference
between two numbers or finding the remainder when a
smaller number is taken away from a larger number.
Subtract, minus and difference are words often used in
subtraction.
Example:
Subtract 954 from 1993

Multiplication and Division


Multiplication
Multiplication is the process of repeated addition of the
same number. We use words such as multiply, times and
product in multiplication.
Example:
1985 × 5 =

Division
Division is the process of putting things into equal groups
or sharing things equally.
Division is the inverse process of multiplication.
We use words such as divide and quotient in division
Example:
3 864 ÷ 14 =
