Please describe the most significant initiative you have taken
to improve your immediate environment (work/school/family)
Waste disposal is a rising issue in today’s world and one that was creating problems in our school
premises. A creative solution was required to deal with the ordeal in order to improve the conditions at
premises, so I gave the idea for an innovative waste disposal campaign. Three different metal basket
were created each of a different colours; one was for the disposal of glass stuff, the other for paper
materials and the last for tetra pack or other kinds of rubbish. They were placed in various corners of
the premises especially near the canteen. This greatly helped in dividing the recyclable things from the
ones that had to be disposed off. Alongside this an awareness campaign amongst the students was
launched so that they understand the idea behind this concept and actively take part in it, helping to
keep the premises clean. This included a presentation during assembly time i.e. before the classes
begin. The result was that in a matter of days there was a visible change in the condition of our
premises.
Please tell us about a time in your life when you realized that you
needed to stretch yourself to meet a new situation or higher standard.
What did you do and what was the outcome?
I was very carefree when I was in my O and A levels, had no worries whatsoever about my grades in
school or what I would end up getting in my finals. The reality struck me when I joined my bachelors
programme. The first semester seemed like a roller coaster ride where one just had to keep pace or
would end up far behind the line and I realised that my laid-back attitude would just not work anymore.
That is when I had to work hard day and night to cope with the work pressure and it finally paid off
when I got my first scholarship on merit for the second semester! However, it was not easy; apart from
all the hard work, I had to face a lot of peer pressure from my friends as they compelled me towards all
the activities that I indulged in to waste hours and hours. Saying no to all that and at the same time
maintaining friendship with my old friends, made me grow as a person into someone more mature,
hardworking and capable enough to deal with the ordeals of the world out there.

Please give the most striking example of a time you were successful at
working through a major disagreement among individuals (a group) to
reach a decision
Group dynamics has been an important aspect of my educational journey at LSE. Whenever a task is to
be carried out in a group, it raises many issues like how to divide the work in a fair manner. A similar
situation arose while doing a marketing project where the objective was to carry out an analysis of the
marketing strategy of KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). It was a group assignment but the issue was that,
where everyone had to put in equal effort in making the report, only two people out of the group of 5
were to conduct the presentation in class and the group’s marking will be based on the performance of
these two. Hence, the question arose of who these two will be because everyone’s grade was at stake.
Arguments flared over who was capable enough who was not, who was at ease with words vs. who
could better explain the technicalities and the end result was that no one was really concentrating on the
main part that is the report! A point reached were no one got along and the group was on the verge of
breaking up. I decided then it was time to act responsible and so called upon a group meeting where it
was decided that each one would be given a fair chance to be able to present but first of all we need to
get down to work and make the report as we were running out of time. When report was completed
there was a ‘pilot’ presentation session conducted on the weekend where everyone presented turn by
turn in front of the whole group as a rehearsal. It was then unanimously decided who performed the
best and this way the most capable ones amongst us were given the task and our group ended up
securing the highest number of marks in class!
