world. According to Garinger (2001), "Textbooks play a vital role in the field of language
teaching and learning and they are considered the next important second language / foreign
language factor (element) after the teacher."
In some situations, they serve as the basis for most of the linguistic input students receive and
for language practice that occurs in the classroom. They can provide the basis for the contents'
lessons, the balance of skills taught, and the types of language practice students engage in. In
other situations, the textbook may serve primarily to supplement the teacher's instruction and
for the students to provide the primary source of contact they have with the language.
Moreover, for inexperienced teachers, textbooks can also serve as a form of teacher training:
they provide ideas on how to plan and teach lessons and forms that teachers can use. Most of
the language teaching that takes place today could not be done without the extensive use of
commercial textbooks. Therefore, learning to use and adapt textbooks is an essential part of a
teacher's professional knowledge. In this sense, this document will discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of the book "Touchstone 1".
