Perhaps the most famous period of Kansas' history is the great Dust Bowl of the 1930's. While many people left to
f
find refuge elsewhere, those who were resolved not to abandon their homes stayed. From day to day, struggle to
f
struggle, only the most persistent and determined made it through. Living simpler lives, seizing every opportunity,
and having a strong power of will is what kept people going. Many Kansans today carry on these same principles.
They are known for their mid‐western work ethic and unwavering spirits.
Two local companies were recently founded by people with true Kansas spirit. Grace Hill Winery and the Tallgrass
Brewing Company were started by individuals who decided to risk everything by leaping into the unknown world of
entrepreneurship in order to follow their passions. Both highly successful on their own, Grace Hill and Tallgrass have
decided to merge under the umbrella of Synthesis Beverages Inc. and expand their markets throughout the United
States and internationally.
Design concept
The goal of this project is to design a centralized headquarters for the merger of Grace Hill Winery and Tallgrass
Brewing Company into an international business venture. The headquarters needs to pay homage to the strong
Kansas spirit of the founders and the people who came before them. High style, environmental consciousness, and
g p p g
close attention to details will come together to create a place for both companies to grow and mature.

Form
Kansas Brewing Inc. headquarters will be located just outside of Manhattan, KS in an existing building. The structural
f
integrity of the existing building needs to remain intact, allowing for only slight modifications if the design calls for
them. The approximate square footage of the building is7600 sq. ft.
Function
As the centralized headquarters, the building needs to foster the development of Kansas Beverages Inc. into its own
company while still accommodating needs of people from both companies. Some spaces within the headquarters
will serve specific purposes, while others may have various functions. Being able to adapt the space layout and
function will be key to maximizing the building's potential.
Issues rregardingg:
Economy
Both Grace Hill and Tallgrass deliver quality products to consumers while working within tight financial means. The
headquarters needs to reflect this practice. To accomplish getting high style while staying within a modest budget
will require extensive research on available products and making selections based on durability, design impact, and
value.
Time
In the corporate world, time is money. The faster people get their tasks done, the more profits the company
acquires. It has been statistically proven that well designed work environments increase productivity. The building

design and layout needs to maximize productivity by encouraging workers to spend their time wisely, organizing the
spaces in the most practical way, and including design elements that will increase the rate at which people work.
Sustainability
Typical materials and methods for commercial projects are not sustainable, so extra care in making design decisions
is crucial to creating a more sustainable project. Sustainability goes beyond material selections, it encompasses
is crucial to creating a more sustainable project. Sustainability goes beyond material selections, it encompasses
every aspect of the design process, from the initial stages of planning until the product is with the end user.
Decisions regarding sustainability need to focus on reducing the building's energy usage, reducing its carbon
footprint, encouraging employees to implement more sustainable practices, creating a healthy work environment,
and taking advantage of passive systems.

•Creating indoor/outdoor spatial relationships; methods of accomplishing this may include outdoor patios for use by
employees and visitors, utilizing operable windows to allow ventilation and day lighting, or designing an open,

Spaces that fall under this category need to accommodate more than one person at a given time. Meetings may be
conducted with people within the company or people outside the company. Meetings may also be more or less
formal
Other (O)

“Water and Wind” Competition, DNA+
STRATA light “Water and Wind” Competition, DNA+
Fall 2009
The simple, elegant form of STRATA enhances elements of the existing DNA+ collection without detracting focus from their own beauty. While
there is a strong emphasis on the horizontal plane, the subtle curve adds interest and drama. Just as light rebounds off the cavern walls in
Antelope canyon, light travels into the surrounding space by deflecting off the center piece of Corian. Aligning the three parts of the light was
inspired by the layered soils of the canyon formations. The name is taken from the plural of stratum, which means “a layer of material, naturally
or artificially formed, often one of a number of parallel layers one upon another”.
Whether in a commercial space or private residence, STRATA is designed for anyone who finds the aesthetics of the Antelope collection
pleasing. Asides from being compliant for use in a wet environment, STRATA is environmentally safe both in its materials and the lights utilized.
Keeping in mind the design philosophies of DNA+, STRATA is designed to bring comfort, style, and an inviting illumination to the bath
environment.

DNA+ is holding this international competition to generate a new feature to
the Antelope bath collection. The collection was inspired by Antelope
canyon in Arizona. Proposed designs must compliment existing elements of
the collection, as well as uphold the philosophies of having easy access, be
environmentally safe, and be compliant for use in a wet environment both
residentially and commercially. Entries submitted must fit in one of the Beautiful
following categories: furniture, accessory, or lighting.
The jury will award designs and concepts which are innovative and
manufacturable.

Technology Limitations
Die Casting is the process that uses a split metal tool die where molten metal is injected at high
pressure. The cast part is ejected from the tool die by ejector pins on one of the tool die halves.
The only materials that can be die cast are non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, zinc,
magnesium, and copper-based alloys. The advantages include a low cost for high volumes,
accuracy and ability for complicated designs, smooth surface on finished pieces, and fast
production rates.
Extrusion is the process of forcing hot or cold copper, brass, aluminum, steel, other metals, and
plastics through a shape-forming die. The material being extruded is plastically deformed from
compression in the die cavity. It is usually best to utilize the basic shapes provided and sharp
corners are usually avoided. Another common use for extrusion is to cut the material into smaller
pieces to be placed in molds or put through another process.
Tubing, just as it implies, refers to the manufacturing of tubes. In most all situations, tubes are
formed from either plastic or metal being extruded through dies. The extruded product can then
be dimensioned, cut, capped, and finished according to the specifications.
Thermoforming is the process by which flat sheets of plastic are heated then brought into
contact with a mold to form plastic parts in the shape of that mold. Vacuum action, pressure,
and/or direct mechanical force can be utilized to complete the process. Thermoforming is much
less expensive than injection molding pieces, and when done properly can have the same
tolerances and precise detailing.
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) refers to machines that read data from computers and
perform that given function. Some of the greatest benefits to using CNC are that difficult shapes
can easily be produced, complex 3D models are easily formed, large numbers of pieces can be
processed with consistency, the machines can easily transition to making different parts,
computer aided designs can easily be imported, and the amount of human errors are reduced.

The final design came after many trials of trying to combine the “Antelope canyon walls” concept with the “Antelope collection
hooks” idea. The chosen design uses the assembly form of the hooks with the idea of reflecting light off a surface like in the
caverns of Antelope canyon.

STRATA is designed to cast an inviting, warm-white light into its environment. Equip with high power LED’s, the lights themselves will last for
+50,000 hours, use minimal amounts of energy to operate, and be safe for the environment. Designed with the consumer in mind, STRATA is
easy to function, requires low maintenance, and goes beyond having only one lighting possibility. The STRATA is designed to serve three
functions, all controlled by the flick of a switch.

Conclusion
The DNA+ “Water and Wind” competition was a great opportunity to gain experience in designing something for real production.
As a student designer, I felt challenged to create something to compliment an existing collection, work within set technology and
material limitations, consider human use factor, understand manufacturability, and consider all the different aspects of product
design. I believe this project will be very beneficial for developing my portfolio.
What I enjoyed most about the project was that it was a competition. The thought of having a chance, even if small, of winning and
earning recognition as an emerging designer was very enticing.
My main criticism about the design process was that there wasn’t a lot of feedback from everyone in studio during the conceptual
phase. It would have been beneficial to everyone to have more open discussions about ideas.
There are always parts of a project that I wish I could redo or change, but for the most part I am satisfied with the work I
completed and end product.

Solution: By designing a versatile shelving system that utilizes available vertical space users can free up the area around the tub,
adjust the shelves for different bottles, add/remove shelves if necessary, have easier access to their products, and better organize.
Problem 2: The initial problem was having to stir liquids on the stove for extended periods of time. The problem evolved to try to
improve the mixer concept. Stand mixers are heavy and come with only one bowl, while hand mixers can be hard to maneuver.

Solution: The main feature of this new concept is the ability to attach the mixer to any pot or bowl. By combining the power and motion
of a stand mixer with the user ability of a hand held model, this design would accommodate a large variety of tasks. Some of the key
features include a digital timer, different attachments that can be released by a button, and have a comparable weight to a hand held
model.
Problem 3: Numerous people burn themselves from taking things out of the oven because it is difficult to pull out the rack or get their
hands around the pan. Also, people with arthritis or back problems can face difficulties lifting things out of the oven.
