Adult learners are often connected to working adult. There are certain
characteristics we can see in the working adult learners. Some of them are very
highly motivated and will stop at nothing to obtain their goals.

by them during their studies at the higher institute. These adults need to be
motivated and pushed so that they can cope with their problems in order to give
them the opportunity to excel in their studies.

Learning gaining knowledge has no limit at age. Adult learn because they
want to upgrade their life financially. Nowadays, money are important and it is
one of the most important things in life. To get a very comfortable life, many
adults tend to study again because of this reason which is to get a higher salary
in their pay cheques.

As working adults, the adult learner will encounter and faced lots of
problems on pursuing their studies at the higher institutional level. This is due to
the responsibilities towards their life which includes job, family and technology.

2.1 WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS FACED BY THE WORKING ADULT

LEARNERS.

2.1.1 Institutional Barriers

Most of the working adult learners are more than forty years old.
Many adult learners are not exposed to the latest technology which is
computer. Not many of them find it easy to use the computers like the younger
version of students. They are more exposed to the old fashioned
way to get and collect information or data. Only a few are interested in
learning to use the computers and learn to surf the internet.

Nowadays, course delivers virtually and this has become a big

problem to the working adults. They do not understand the usage of
computers and the important of internet. They are not confident enough
and they are lack of exposure and knowledge.

Once they feel it is hard for them to cope up with the technology
problem, they tend to quit and never excel in their studies. This can be a
big problem for them.

2.1.2 Dispositional Barriers

LEARNING SKILLS FOR OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNERS

As a working adult learner, he or she needs to know which the

main priority in their life is. Most of the working adult learner find it hard
to divide their time between their job and their learning activities at the
higher level.

At work, there are tons of workload to be completed at a certain

dateline. Due to these problems, many adult learners tend to skip classes
or even never attend tutorials because of their position and responsibilities
at the work places.

Sometimes, the employers do not want to understand the situations

of the working adult learner’s limitation of time in a day. They keep on
pushing the adults learners to get the job done on time and never want to
compromise not even a bit to give them space and time to concentrate on
their studies.

Besides that, colleagues at work will never want to cooperate in

helping the adult learners to get their job on time. Many working adults
believe that who can get the job done on time will get promoted easily. It
will add on more and more problems to them. The rivalries at work place
and too many competitions between their colleagues.

2.1.3 Situational Barriers

Most of the working adult learners are married. Due to their status,
they have more responsibilities in their every day life. Responsibilities to
keep their own family in comfort state where they need to provide their
spouses and children time and attention. Most of women who are working
and learning as well faced this problem more than man do. Woman are
very caring, loving and responsible towards their family. They do not only
doing the house chores but sometimes do all the stuff that men do not have
time to do, for instant paying bills or even fetching and sending the
children to school.

When adults learn, they need a lot of money to buy lap top,
printers and even paying bills for the internet connection which are very
important to them. They need to be more stable in thief financial state and
this can give them stress and tension.

concentrating or inability to make decisions is also considered as stress
symptoms. A negative attitude such as intolerance with the other adult
learners is also a sign of stress.

There are two types of stress which are the positive stress and the
negative stress. Positive stress helps us to be more alert, motivates us to
face challenged and drives us to solve the problems that we are facing.
Negative stress can lead to heart diseases and mental illness.

Coping with the studies as well as work can affect the adult
learners mentally and physically. They get tired easily as they need to gain
and obtain good marks in their studies or recommendations from their
employers.

The most common effect faced by the adult learners are lack of
time. They feel that they have minimal time with their families, at the
work place and even for themselves. They do not know how to divide their
time wisely and because of lack of knowledge in time management, they

Lastly, financial effects play the biggest role in the working adult
learner’s every day’s life. They need to know how to use their money

There are problems ever where in our every day’s life whether we are
working adult learners or not. Different situations have different problems that we
need to face. There are many barriers in the working adult learner’s such as lack
of knowledge in using the technologies, disposal barrier and situational barrier.
Due to this barriers and problems faced by the adult learners, they tend to stress
out. They cannot think straight and it affects their moods in everything.

As a conclusion, it is evident that working adult learners have to make

common adaptive responses to the changing of their role from non-student to a
student. They perceived that they and their families experience various transitions
as a result of their participation in higher education. It is therefore, imperative for
distance education institutions to provide adequate student support services that
not only focus on the adult learner themselves but also take into consideration the
learners’ home and working environment with particular attention given to the
different types and phases of transition. Such support services should take into
consideration the complexity of the role the adult learners have to play and the
unique difficulties that are associated with this role. With such support services,
the adult learners are better prepared to participate in higher education, achieving
balanced ansd satisfying lifestyle during such an endeavour.
