NEW HORIZONS’ ONLINE LIVE
We are excited to help you attain your goals. You’ve made an excellent choice to take advantage of the flexibility
of live, expert online instruction, and the convenience of attending class from anywhere you please.
We want your Online Live class to be enjoyable and trouble free. To make this happen, first take a few moments to
check the equipment and connections the week prior to attending the Online Live Class. You will need to take the
following steps to set up for class:
Ensure your computer meets the minimum system requirements recommended for running the online
session
Log in to the Online Live site to check configuration
o Download and install the Java Runtime Environment required to launch the environment
o Check your microphone and sound in the online environment and set preferences
Log in early the day of class to double check equipment
We strongly recommend that you use the headset provided for class rather than a built-in speaker and
microphone system in order to help eliminate echoing and feedback. Headsets will improve the audio experience
for you and the rest of the participants.

New Horizons Center.
After your initial login, you will be taken Class Enrollments page. Under My Classes, find the class you are
scheduled to attend and select the Class Name link.
If the Software Check has a green check mark in the Software check box, skip the following section and go to the
information on the Configuration Room.
8
If the Software Check shows an Alert, you will need to download Java to support the online environment.
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.5 or higher is required to launch a session. On a Macintosh, it is pre-
installed and automatically updated. For the other operating systems, you will need to download it.
Installation of the Java Runtime Environment is a one-time process. The download can take up to 40 minutes on a
28.8K modem; it may take much less time depending on the speed of your Internet connection. Please allow
enough time to complete the download and installation before your class begins.
Select the link Click here to install Java. This link opens a new window. Select the blue Free Java Download button
to begin the download.
9
Select the Run button once the File Download window opens,.
The file will load. If you receive a security warning, choose Run to continue loading the program.
When the Welcome to Java window opens, click the Install button. Installation may take a few minutes to
complete.
10
A Java Setup – Complete window will open when the installation has finished successfully. Choose the Close button
and return to the Online Live Class page.
You should now see a green check mark under the software check.
With Java installed you should be able to connect to the online environment. Continue to the Configuration Room
to complete class setup.
11
CONFIGURATION ROOM
The Configuration Room is designed to help you set up before class begins: It allows you to verify access to an
Elluminate Live session and set up your audio and connection speed. Elluminate Live is the software that delivers
the interactive online classroom environment.
Enter the Configuration Room by selecting the Click here to enter the Configuration Room link.
While the Elluminate Live software loads you may be asked to run the program, receive a security alert to allow or
unblock the application, and/or agree to the License. Click Yes or OK as needed to proceed.
The connection set up will open in a window as the Elluminate Live application is opening.
Leave the Connection Speed at the default of Cable/DSL, the Prompt for speed at Never, and then select OK.
12
Check for your name in the Participants window.
Use the Audio Setup Wizard to test and adjust the sound within the online classroom setting. Plug the headset you
received for the class into the audio ports.
Macintosh OS Audio
If you are using a Macintosh, the headset you received for this course is only partially compatible. The headphone
works, but the microphone plug is incompatible with Macintosh's microphone port, so you will not be able to use
the microphone portion of the headset. You may still use the headset to listen: Insert the black plug into the audio
jack, but do not insert the red microphone plug.
All recent Macintoshes, both desktops and laptops, have excellent audio systems with built-in microphones and
speakers. When you run the Configuration Check and perform the Audio Setup Wizard, select the Macintosh's
internal microphone from the list rather than the headset microphone.
Begin by opening the Wizard. From the Tools menu, select Audio and then Audio Setup Wizard.
13
USING AUDIO SETUP WIZARD
In the Audio Setup Wizard window, be sure the speakers are selected and then click OK. In the next window, press
Play to test your headset. Adjust the speaker setting so that mostly green shows, but no red. When you stop the
sound, the window changes to confirm the volume was at a comfortable listening level. If you need to make
further adjustments, select No to return to the Speaker Setup window. If everything works to your satisfaction,
select Yes.
Once the Speaker levels are set, the wizard will help you set up the microphone.
In the Audio Setup Wizard window, be sure the microphone is selected for the audio input device and then click
OK. In the next window, record a script to test your headset microphone. Adjust the speaker setting so that there
is mostly green, a little yellow but no red. After you stop recording, play it back to adjust the volume as desired. In
the confirmation window, affirm the volume was at a comfortable listening level. If you need to make further
adjustments, select No to return to the Microphone Setup window. If everything works to your satisfaction, select
Yes.
This completes the setup for your upcoming Online Live class. You may close out the window or continue to the
next section to become familiar with the classroom environment.
14

Some troubleshooting steps are provided below in the event the setup wasn’t successful.
If you receive a Connection Failed error, it is most likely a Firewall issue. Either you are in a business location with a
network firewall, you have a software firewall on your computer, or you have a software and/or hardware firewall
built or installed in your cable/DSL internet router or modem. Solutions are provided for these scenarios below.
If you are connecting through an Internet firewall you may have to change the Proxy Settings preference.
Sometimes Java, the software used to launch the session, is unable to automatically detect the proxy settings and
so is unable to connect to the proxy server. If this happens, you may be able to start Elluminate, the application
used to hold the session, but not be able to join a session.
If a Connection failed error message appears, it is likely you have encountered a proxy configuration error.
You may need to change your Proxy Settings to enable Elluminate to communicate with your proxy server.
22
BUSINESS LOCATION WITH A NETWORK FIREWALL
Contact your IT department to discuss this situation. Inform them Elluminate Live activity takes place through Port
80. When in the process of Connecting to Host, Port 80 also tunnels Java traffic. Many corporate firewalls must be
adjusted to allow this traffic.
If the company has a Proxy Server, contact your IT department for the Proxy Server settings. Follow the steps
below to change the Proxy Settings.
To change the Proxy Settings, open the Tools menu in the Eluminate Live session and choose Preferences. On a
Macintosh OS, open the Elluminate Live menu and choose Preferences.
In the left panel, select Proxy Settings to display the settings in the right panel. From the Method drop-down
menu, select HTTP Proxy Server. For the Server, input the Proxy Settings provided by your System Administrator.
For the Port, input 80, and then choose OK.
23
Try to connect. From the Session menu select Join Class…
SOFTWARE FIREWALL
If you have one or more software firewalls set up on your computer, you can create an exception for Java and
Elluminate Live to run.
24
On the Control Panel, depending on the operating system, either Security or Windows Firewall will be displayed.
Under Security, select Allow a program through Windows Firewall. Now you have a choice to turn off the Firewall
or to allow a program through Windows Firewall.
Open the Security tab of the Windows Firewall Settings dialog, check the box(es) for Java ™ Platform SE binary
and click OK. Check for two listings of Java ™ Platform SE binary.
25
CABLE/DSL INTERNET ROUTER OR MODEM FIREWALL
If you have a software and/or hardware firewall built or installed in your Cable/DSL internet router or modem, you
will need to contact your Internet Service Provider for instructions on how to turn off or configure the firewall. In
some cases, the ISP will configure it for you. Tell your Internet Service Provider that the programs you are allowing,
Java and Elluminate Live, need access through Port 80.
DIRECT CONNECTION
If you are not connecting through a Proxy Server, you may still need to change the Proxy Settings. Open the Tools
menu in the Eluminate Live session and choose Preferences.
In the left panel select Proxy Settings to display the settings in the right panel.
If you receive a time out error, try again. It may take more than one attempt to connect after the configuration is
corrected.
26
INVALID CERTIFICATE
Change your Internet options if you receive an error stating you have an invalid certificate or that a certificate
cannot be validated.
Open a new Internet Browser window. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
Open the Advanced tab, in the Settings window, scroll down to the Security section and check the boxes for Allow
active content to run in files on My Computer and Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid.
If you would like assistance with any of these issues or have questions about the set up, please contact the Student
Support Services team.
