READING
Making questions
Part I. Read carefully and answer the following questions.

My job

I got a summer job at a fancy mall to finance my first trip abroad. It is close to my house so it seems ideal. The place
where I work is in the department of silks. I don’t have any training, so I’m terrified of cutting fabrics. Some regular
customers have servants and drivers. Some come for years. Most of them are nice, but some are unpleasant. Often, when
someone notorious appeared, experienced staff escaped and hid. They only left the warehouse after the client had left.

The first day of sales. I set my alarm early so I wouldn’t be late. I dressed quickly. Outside, it was raining a lot and traffic
was dragging. I arrived at work, people were forming. Some had been waiting all night and the weather did not improve
their temperament. It’s a potentially dangerous mob and I could see why our boss planned the sale as a military
operation. The day before, my 'commander' had told me to work at the end of the tables in the middle of the store floor.

From five to nine, we all waited anxiously, as the seconds passed. Suddenly, the doors opened and there was the sound of
hundreds of pairs of feet running through the lobby. At the crucial moment, just as the first customers were approaching,
I dropped the scissors. I crawled under the table when the stampede occurred. I was trapped under it for twenty minutes,
surrounded by a sea of legs. I was completely helpless.

I don’t really like my job because most of the people forgot their responsibilities so for me it is a problem why? Is easy
because you can’t remember that you have other responsibility you cannot do two activities at the same time so that’s the
reason.

Modern Technology.

Modern technology 1. changing the way we live our lives. Clever gadgets make everyday activities easier
and enable people to use their time effectively. But what impact will this change have in the future and is it really
a positive thing? People are busier than ever before.

Technological advances mean that things are often possible with the touch of a button. 2. hundred years ago,
however, things were very different. Everyday jobs, like doing the laundry, would take a whole day, and the
telephone was a new invention! Nowadays, almost every household has a washing machine and a dishwasher, and
there are more than 70 million mobile phones in use in the United Kingdom alone. Research shows that around 28%
of children in the UK are overweight or obese. Some people are concerned that this is because young people spend
too much time online and not enough time socialising with 3. friends and playing outside. In the past, nearly
all children walked to school because their parents didn’t have a car. They didn’t have all the luxuries that many
children have now, so they used their imaginations and played outdoors in the fresh air.

Years ago, when people wanted to stay in touch with their friends and family, they wrote letters. These days,
however, E-mail communication and social networking sites, such as Facebook, allow instant, free international
communication. Online banking and shopping make essential activities possible from the comfort of our own homes.
However, what effect will this have on town centres and shops? In some towns and cities, many shops
4. now empty, and many people think this is because more and more people choose to use the Internet for

PART I. Read the text and choose the best option for each sentence

Whether you're travelling to the islands or the mountains of Thailand, you're likely to spend at least one night in its capital city on the
way. Bangkok might be noisy and polluted but it's also an exciting city with plenty of things to see and do. Why not make it a longer
stay?
Where to stay:
The Khao San Road was a famous traveller spot even before Leonardo di Caprio's character in the film The Beach stayed there. But it's
noisy, not very pretty and not very Thai. For something more authentic, Phra Kanong offers an alternative place to stay, with its fantastic
street markets where everyday Bangkok people eat, work and live. It's not as convenient for the main tourist sites, but it has a Skytrain
station so you can be at the Grand Palace in 20 minutes.
How to get around:
Bangkok's traffic can be a nightmare. Sure, you can easily take a taxi – if you want to spend hours stuck in traffic jams – but there are
two much better ways to get around the city. To explore the temples and historical sites, catch an express boat river taxi or a longtail
boat along the Chao Phraya river and the canals. For the modern part of the city, the Skytrain is a fast, cheap way to travel from the
river to the shopping malls and nightlife of Sukhumvit, and the famous Chatuchak street market.
Where to eat:
The simple answer is: everywhere! Thai street food is among the best in the world, and for around $5 you can eat a filling and
delicious meal. Some food stands have little plastic seats where you can sit and eat and they cook the same dish over and over, like
fried chicken on rice or Pad Thai noodles. Head for Chinatown – Yaowarat Street – and choose whatever looks most interesting from
the many excellent Chinese and Thai restaurants and food stands.
What to do:
After you've seen the main sites like the Giant Buddha at the temple of Wat Pho and the spectacular Grand Palace, and shopped at
Chatuchak market, check out the snake farm and watch the live snake show. You can even touch a snake yourself if you want to!
