SECUSSA Research Committee

Mission
The purpose of the SECUSSA Research Committee will be to highlight the value of research on education abroad
and promote the research agenda of SECUSSA and activities of its membership. The Committee with other
professional organizations, schools of education, and academic journals/publications will be critical collaborators
in this effort. The Committee will operate in accordance with NAFSA’s Strategic Plan to commission and fund
research that supports the promotion of U.S. student participation in education abroad. The Committee will
provide an opportunity and venue at the annual conference for SECUSSA members to present, discuss and
distribute research results as well as generate ideas for future areas of investigation.

Charge
 Work with SECUSSA leadership in the development of a research agenda for SECUSSA and the field.
 Sponsor invited papers at regional and national conferences.
 Help generate support for research and research funding/grants.
 Increase the field’s connection with US Schools of Education.
 Help facilitate the development of a depository of research documents accessible online.
 Increase the Committee’s recognition with other professional organizations that sponsor international
education and solicit appropriate papers.

Governance and Membership


I. In accordance with the SECUSSA Standing Rules (Rule V. Ad Hoc and Standing Committee), the Chair(s) of
the SECUSSA Research Committee shall be appointed by the Chair of SECUSSA and shall report to the Chair of
SECUSSA.

II. Chair(s) of the SECUSSA Research Committee shall serve a three-year renewable term.

III. The SECUSSA Research Committee Chair(s) shall present an annual slate of their steering committee to the
team for discussion and approval at the national team meeting. Subject to their charge, they may encourage
education and training initiatives, publications, advocacy and other leadership activities. They shall provide
periodic reports of their activities to the membership. They shall present an annual report to the SECUSSA Chair,
at least one month prior to the national team meeting. They shall attend a portion of the annual team meeting to
report on the progress of the committee. Chairs should make arrangements for their committee members to meet
at either the national NAFSA conference or in other venues.

IV. Membership of SECUSSA Research Committee shall be for a one-year renewable term.

V. The charge of the SECUSSA Research Committee shall be prepared by the SECUSSA Chair, in consultation
with the team and the Committee Chair(s).
