Cantuña

CANTUÑA
This interesting history of Cantuña is very widespread and was born during the Spanish Colonization in
Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, more or less in the year 1766.
Francisco Cantuña an Indian man, strong, intelligent and very wise with black hair, braided and with
great power over the rest of the indigenous people. Famous for being a direct descendant of the great
warrior Rumiñahui.
Francisco Cantuña undertakes to carry out the construction of the Church of San Francisco. The pay was
very good, but the condition was that it had to be done in less than 6 months. Time passed and the work
was not finished, and this made him very nervous since he could not complete the work on time.
But one day, when he was returning home, a little man came out of the rocks.
dressed in red, with a very pointed nose and beard that in a resounding voice told him: I am Satan, I want
to help you. I can finish the churchyard before the sun rises.

As a payment, you would give me your soul. Do you accept? Cantuña, who saw it impossible to finish
the work on time, told him: I accept, but not a single stone should be missing.
Dozens of devils got down to business and worked tirelessly. Cantuña, who was watching with fear as
the work was being finished, sat in a place and realized that a stone was missing. It was then when
sunrise that stone was missing to finish the work, and Cantuña can save his soul. The devil, very angry,
disappeared and Cantuña, in addition to saving his soul, was able to see the finished work that is
preserved to this day.

Father Alemeida

It is the legend of Father Manuel Almeida who was a Franciscan priest and was to
become Master of Novices and Provincial secretary of the Franciscan order in Ecuador.
The young Almeida joined the Franciscan order at the young age of 17 allegedly due to
a ‘broken heart’ after being jilted by a young lady.  Almeida was tall, good.looking,
played the guitar and had a fine tenor voice.  Despite becoming a monk in the San
Diego monastery, he maintained his fondness for the young ladies and soon discovered
that his fellow young monks undertook nightly escapades in which they jumped over
the wall of the monastery and visited a ‘house’ for a night of music, dancing and
female comforts!

Manuel Almeida became an instant hit with the

ladies and was soon addicted to ‘wine, women
and song’.  However the authorities got wind of
what was going on and heightened the walls of
the monastery to prevent the monks escaping.
Not to be deterred, Manuel Almeida discovered a
new escape route that entailed climbing up to the
chapel window and jumping down to the square
below.    In order to do this he had to climb up a statue of the crucified Christ and stand
on its shoulders.  After many nights of freedom gained in this way he was again
climbing up the statue when it opened its lips and declared “ Until when, Father
Almeida?”   Not to be outdone the young monk replied  “Hasta la vuelta, Señor.” “
Until I come back Lord!”

This continued for many nights until one early morning when Father Almeida was the
‘worse for wear’ and was returning to the monastery, he encountered a funeral
procession and asked one of the mourners who the dead person was.  The reply was ‘its
Father Almeida and we are on our way to bury him.”  When Almeida approached the
bier and lifted the shroud he was shocked to see himself dead!  He quickly ran back to
the monastery and climbed down the statue of Christ which asked him the usual
question, “Until when Father Almeida?”   However this time he gave no reply!

The legend goes on to recount that Manuel Almeida never sneaked out of the
monastery again and became a devout novice and eventually almost earned a
sainthood!

The rooster of Catedral.

This is an urban legend of Church Catedral in Ecuador- Quito}}

Mr Ramòn Ayala was a man lover of bets , alcohol drink ,good food , and cockfighting.
He was always buying alcoholic drink in a traditional shop in the San Juan
neigborhood.

Ramòn would get very drunk and say all kinds of things. He used to say: I am rather
than others people. He continued walking toward his
house, and in his path he saw the rooster of Catedral and he walked toward the rooster
of Catedral and said "This isn`t a fighting rooster ha ha! I`m not afraid of you!"! ha
ha ,and He continued on his way

. The next day , Ramòn was again drunk in the street so decided to return home. He
always had that pass for the church Catedral where the rooster was and Ramòn said to
the rooster "This isn`t a fighting rooster ha ha! I`m not afraid of you!"! ha ha .

While Ramòn was speaking ,the rooster started to move and said to Ràmon: You are an
alcoholic ! and irresponsible.Do you promise that you will never go to drink?

Ramòn felt scared and he fell down, at the same time He answered :Yes,I do.
Since that day,Ramòn never more alcohol drank , and was a kind and good man.
Some people of this period said that maybe it was only a joke by his friends because
Ramòn drank too much!
