Notes
This shawl was inspired by Mary Konior’s “Fancy Fan Shawl” which is shown in her
“Crochet Lace” book (unfortunately now out of print). Her design was a square
shawl; mine is a wide crescent with many modifications for shaping and various
options for width and depth changes. This design is a free pattern in celebration on
my 5 year design-anniversary March 2017.

Besides changing your starting chain length for a wider shawl, you can easily change
the number of repeat rows in Sections 1 and 2. Note that Section 2 provides more
widening at the top edge than does Section 1. If you do not like the center “stripe”
you can vary the placement of your increase Fans on the increase rows – just keep
them symmetrical to the center.

At the end of Section 2, my Treble Fantasy was 16” deep by 60” wide; already a
respectable width. I had used about 850 yards at that point. Section 3 used
another 100 yards or so: I worked 5 rows to bring it to 70” wide and 18” deep
before blocking.

In Section 3, I started with half-feathers at the row ends (4 tr) and worked them
up to full 8-tr feathers over 5 rows so my picots could land in the center on the
final row and match the other feathers’ picots. I found that you need some sort of
increasing on the end feathers else they shrink in pitifully, so I added one tr (and a
ch) each row at the end feathers. I also decided to increase the ch2 between
stitch groups (they are underlined starting on Row 2) by one ch each row starting at
Row 3 so the Dc Triangles could sink inward rather than being stretched out to try
and meet the taller Treble feathers. You could work more or fewer rows of Section
3, but would have to sacrifice their “picot-symmetry” at the ends.

Other possibilities for the picots:

1. You could just skip the Picots
2. You could put them between every tr on all the feathers
3. You could do 3 picots per feather
4. You could put them wherever you think they look best!

You could also use contrasting color(s) to accent Section 3.

After working Treble Fantasy, I realized many people would prefer working double
crochet stitches - so I worked a second shawl, somewhat similar but using dc
stitches, and my notes are after the directions for the original Treble version. The
Double Fantasy version can be modified with a different starting chain length, and
different row counts for Sections 1 and 2 as well.

Treble Fantasy
SECTION 1 – NESTED TREBLE FANS

All ODD rows work a FAN in the center; all EVEN rows work a SC in center.
Use the size 7(4.5mm) hook for Sections 1 and 2.
FAN = 5 tr worked in same place.
Row 1: Ch16 (or mult of 12 + 4), FAN in 6th ch from hook, skip 1 ch, sc in
next ch, skip 2 ch, FAN in next ch, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, skip 1 ch, FAN in
last ch. PM in center Fan and move it up through the center on subsequent
rows. (3 Fans, or an odd number of Fans; FanCount = [StartChain+2]/6)
(If doing a Crescent and now have 5 or more Fans, just skip right to Row 6.)

SC-IN-FAN = skip 2 tr, work sc in center tr, skip last 2 tr of Fan.

FAN-IN-SC = work 5tr in next sc.
Row 2 (NORMAL FAN ROW): Ch6, turn. FAN in 6th ch from hook, SC-IN-
FAN, [FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-FAN] through last Fan, FAN around tch. (4 Fans)

BIG-FAN = (3 tr, 1 hdc, 3 tr) all worked in same place.

Row 3 (BIG-FAN ROW): Ch6, turn. FAN in 6th ch from hook, SC-IN-FAN,
BIG-FAN in next sc, SC-IN-FAN, FAN in center sc, SC-IN-FAN, BIG-FAN
in next sc, SC-IN-FAN, FAN around tch. (3 Fans, 2 Big-Fans)

Treble Fantasy – V.3 – April 26, 2017 - Page 4 of 13

INC-OVER-BIG-FAN = Skip 1st tr, sc in 2nd tr, skip 3rd tr, FAN in hdc, skip
4th tr, sc in 5th tr, skip 6th tr.
Row 4 (INC-OVER-BIG-FAN ROW): Ch6, turn. FAN in 6th ch from hook,
[SC-IN-FAN, FAN-IN-SC], INC-OVER-BIG-FAN, FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-FAN
(Center), FAN-IN-SC, INC-OVER-BIG-FAN, [FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-FAN],
FAN around tch. (8 Fans)

Row 5: (NORMAL FAN ROW): Ch6, turn. FAN in 6th ch from hook, SC-IN-
FAN, [FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-FAN] through last Fan, FAN around tch. (9 Fans)

4-Row Repeat Sequence Begins:

Row 6 (Normal Fan Row): Ch6, turn. FAN in 6th ch from hook, SC-IN-FAN,
[FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-FAN] through last Fan, FAN around tch. (10 Fans, or +1
Fan) sc at center

Row 7 (Big-Fan-ROW): Ch6, turn. FAN in 6th ch from hook, SC-IN-FAN,

[FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-FAN] to sc BEFORE marked center sc, BIG-FAN in
next sc, SC-IN-FAN, FAN in center sc, SC-IN-FAN, BIG-FAN in next sc,
SC-IN-FAN, [FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-FAN] through last Fan, FAN around tch.
(9 Fans, 2 Big-Fans, or + 1 Fan)

Row 8 (Inc-Over-Big-Fan Row): Ch6, turn. FAN in 6th ch from hook, [SC-
IN-FAN, FAN-IN-SC] to Big-Fan, INC-OVER-BIG-FAN, FAN-IN-SC, SC-

Treble Fantasy – V.3 – April 26, 2017 - Page 5 of 13

IN-FAN (Center), FAN-IN-SC, INC-OVER-BIG-FAN, [FAN-IN-SC, SC-IN-
FAN], FAN around tch. (14 Fans, or + 3 Fans)

Row 9 (Normal Fan Row): Rep Row 6; Fan will be at center. (15 Fans, or + 1
Fan)

Repeat Rows 6-9 until Section 1 is of desired size, ending after a Row 9
(with Fan at center). Each repeat of Rows 6-9 adds 6 Fans. I did the above
repeat 4 more times. My Section 1 was 25 rows deep, ending with 39 Fans.

Treble Fantasy – V.3 – April 26, 2017 - Page 6 of 13

SECTION 2 – TRIANGLE ROWS ALTERNATING WITH FAN ROWS

Last row was a Normal Fan Row from Section 1 with a Fan at center.
TT = TREBLE TRIANGLE = (tr, ch2, tr) worked in same st.
FAN-IN-TT = work a FAN in ch2-sp at center of TT between the trebles.
Row 1 (Normal TT Over Fan Row): Ch6, turn. TT in 5th ch from hook, ch2,
SC-IN-FAN, ch2, [TT in next sc, ch2, SC-IN-FAN, ch2] through last Fan,
TT around tch. (Center has a sc; TTs = Fans + 1)

(When working a Fan or Big-Fan in TT, work it around the ch2-sp between
the trebles of the TT.)
Row 2 (Big-Fan-on-TT Row): Ch6, turn. FAN in 5th ch from hook, sc in next
ch, [FAN in TT, sc in next sc] to 2 TT before center, BIG-FAN in TT, sc in
sc, FAN in TT before center sc, sc in center sc, FAN in next TT, sc in sc,
BIG-FAN in next TT, [sc in next sc, FAN in TT] through last TT, sc in 2nd tr
of TT, FAN around tch. (Center has a sc; Fans = TT + 2)

TT-OVER-BIG-FAN = skip 1st tr, sc in 2nd tr, ch2, skip 3rd tr, TT in hdc,
ch2, skip 4th tr, sc in 5th tr, ch2, skip 6th tr.
Row 3 (TT-Over-Big-Fan Row): Ch6, turn. TT in 5th ch from hook, ch2,
[SC-IN-FAN, ch2, TT in next sc, ch2] to Big-Fan, TT-OVER-BIG-FAN,
TT in sc, [ch2, SC-IN-FAN, ch2, TT in sc] 2 times, ch2, TT-OVER-BIG-FAN,
[TT in next sc, ch2, SC-IN-FAN, ch2] through last Fan, TT around tch.
(Center has a TT; TT = Fans + 3)
Treble Fantasy – V.3 – April 26, 2017 - Page 7 of 13
Row 4 (Normal Fan-in-TT Row): Ch6, turn. FAN in 5th ch from hook, sc in
next ch, FAN in TT, [sc in next sc, FAN in TT] through last TT, sc in 2nd tr
of TT, FAN around tch. (Center has a Fan; Fans = TT + 2)

Repeat Rows 1-4 for desired size; each 4-row repeat adds 8 Fans. Count your
TTs after each Row 1 and after each Row 4 and write them down to keep
track. (Working Rows 2 and 3 adds 5 TTs; working Rows 4 and then 1 adds 3
TTs.)

To move to the next Section you need to end after either a Row 1 or a Row 3
with a multiple of 2 + 1 TTs (or a multiple of 4 + 3 TTs if you wish a Feather
at the center in the next Section). You can work an additional Row 4 and Row
1 after a Row 1 if necessary to force the parity of your TT count to odd.

To get your shawl the size of mine, you would work 15 rows in Section 2,
which would give you 69 TTs at the end of Row 3 (mine did NOT have a
center Feather).

SECTION 3 – FEATHER AND BAR EDGING
I worked this section with a snug hand, especially on the chains; I suggest
you do that or switch to a smaller size hook, whichever you prefer.

DTRI = Dc Triangle = (Dc, ch2, dc) worked in same place.

Row 1: Ch7, turn. Work ([tr, ch1] 2 times, tr) in 6th ch from hook, ch2, skip
(ch, tr), work DTRI in ch2-sp of TT, ch2, [skip (tr, ch2, sc, ch2) work tr in
1st tr of TT, ch1, [tr, ch1] 6 times in ch2-sp of TT, tr in 2nd tr of TT, ch2,
skip (ch2-sp, sc, ch2-sp, tr), work DTRI in ch2-sp of TT, ch2] through last
TT, ([tr, ch1] 3 times, tr) around tch. (4tr at ends of rows)

DTRI-IN-DTRI = skip (ch-sp before DTRI and 1st dc of DTRI), work (dc,
ch2, dc) in ch2-sp of DTRI, skip (2nd dc of DTRI and ch-sp after DTRI).
FEATHER-OVER-FEATHER = there are 8 tr and 7 ch1-sp; skip all the trs
and work in ch1-sps as follows: skip 1st ch1-sp, work tr in 2nd ch1-sp, ch1, tr in
3rd ch1-sp, ch1, ([tr, ch1] 4 times) in 4th ch1-sp, tr in 5th ch1-sp, ch1, tr in 6th
ch1-sp, skip 7th ch1-sp.

Treble Fantasy – V.3 – April 26, 2017 - Page 9 of 13

Row 2: Ch7, turn. Work ([tr, ch1] 2 times, tr) in 1st ch1-sp, work [ch1, skip
tr, tr in next ch1-sp] 1 time, skip last (tr, ch1-sp, tr) of stitch group, ch2,
DTRI-IN-DTRI, ch2, [FEATHER-OVER-FEATHER, ch2, DTRI-IN-DTRI,
ch2] through last DTRI, skip (1st tr, 1st ch1-sp, 2nd tr) of end group, work [tr
in next ch1-sp, ch1, skip tr] 1 time, then work ([tr, ch1] 3 times, tr) around
tch. (5tr at ends)

The next rows will increase at the underlined ch-sp, and add a (tr, ch1) to
each end group.

Row 3: Ch7, turn. Work ([tr, ch1] 2 times, tr) in 1st ch1-sp, work [ch1, skip
next tr, tr in next ch1-sp] 2 times, skip last (tr, ch1-sp, tr) of stitch group,
ch3, DTRI-IN-DTRI, ch3, [FEATHER-OVER-FEATHER, ch3, DTRI-IN-
DTRI, ch3] through last DTRI, skip (1st tr, 1st ch1-sp, 2nd tr) of end group,
work [tr in next ch1-sp, ch1, skip next tr] 2 times, then work ([tr, ch1] 3
times, tr) around tch. (6tr at ends)

Row 4: Ch7, turn. Work ([tr, ch1] 2 times, tr) in 1st ch1-sp, work [ch1, skip
next tr, tr in next ch1-sp] 3 times, skip last (tr, ch1-sp, tr) of stitch group,
ch4, DTRI-IN-DTRI, ch4, [FEATHER-OVER-FEATHER, ch4, DTRI-IN-
DTRI, ch4] through last DTRI, skip (1st tr, 1st ch1-sp, 2nd tr) of end group,
work [tr in next ch1-sp, ch1, skip next tr] 3 times, then work ([tr, ch1] 3
times, tr) around tch. (7tr at ends)

Final row does same increasing and also gives feathers a picot at the center.
PICOT = ch5, sl st in 5th ch from hook.
FEATHER-WITH-PICOT-OVER-FEATHER = there are 8 tr and 7 ch1-sp;
skip all the tr and work in ch1-sp as follows: skip 1st ch1-sp, work tr in 2nd
ch1-sp, ch1, tr in 3rd ch1-sp, ch1, (tr, ch1, tr, PICOT, tr, ch1, tr) in 4th ch1-sp,
ch1, tr in 5th ch1-sp, ch1, tr in 6th ch1-sp, skip 7th ch1-sp.

Row 5: Ch7, turn. Work ([tr, ch1] 2 times, tr) in 1st ch1-sp, PICOT, [skip next
tr, work tr in next ch1-sp, ch1] 3 times, skip next tr, tr in next ch1-sp, skip
last (tr, ch1-sp, tr) of stitch group, ch5, DTRI-IN-DTRI, ch5, [FEATHER-
WITH-PICOT-OVER-FEATHER, ch5, DTRI-IN-DTRI, ch5] through last
DTRI, skip (1st tr, 1st ch1-sp, 2nd tr) of end group, work [tr in next ch1-sp,
ch1, skip tr] 3 times, tr in next ch1-sp, PICOT, skip tr, then work ([tr, ch1] 3
times, tr) around tch. (8tr at ends)
Treble Fantasy – V.3 – April 26, 2017 - Page 10 of 13
Top Edging
Continuing with same hook and not cutting yarn, ch1, and work a row of sc
along the top edge (I worked 332 sc). Ch1, turn and work a 2nd row of sc
back to start of previous row. Finish off and cut yarn.

This has got to be an all-time record of Trebles for me, how about you?

Double Fantasy
Perhaps you prefer
doubles to trebles? If so,
you can make the shawl
using double crochet
stitches instead.
Anywhere you see a tr in
the pattern, substitute a
dc. The starting chain for
some rows will be
shortened by 1 chain.
Your BIG-FANs will have
a sc at the center instead
of a hdc. Since dc rows
are shorter than tr rows,
you may want less center
increasing; you can work 2
additional non-increasing
rows in each repeat, if
desired. And a few other
minor changes – see below
for specifics:

SECTION 1 – NESTED DOUBLE FANS

FAN = 5dc instead of 5tr.

BIG-FAN = (3dc, 1sc, 3dc) all worked in same place
INC-OVER-BIG-FAN = Skip 1st dc, sc in 2nd dc, skip 3rd dc, FAN in sc, skip
4th dc, sc in 5th dc, skip 6th dc.

Ch15 (or a multiple of 12 + 3), FAN in 5th ch from hook… to start Row 1.
Each row starts with: Ch5, turn. FAN in 5th ch from hook…
Before starting a Row 7 to increase at the center, you can add 2 more
normal Rows (work Row 6 twice more) if you want to slow the center
increasing.

Treble Fantasy – V.3 – April 26, 2017 - Page 12 of 13

SECTION 2 – TRIANGLE ROWS ALTERNATING WITH FAN ROWS

DTRI = DOUBLE TRIANGLE = (dc, ch2, dc) worked in same st.

FAN-IN-DT = work a FAN in ch2-sp at center of DT between the doubles.
DTRI-OVER-BIG-FAN = skip 1st dc, sc in 2nd dc, ch2, skip 3rd dc, DT in sc,
ch2, skip 4th dc, sc in 5th dc, ch2, skip 6th dc.
Wherever the directions specify a tr, instead do a dc.
Keep the row starts as they are with the “Ch6” at the start.
Before starting a Row 2 to increase at the center, you can add 2 more
normal Rows (a Row 4 then a Row 1) if you want to slow the center increasing;
keep in mind that this changes your next increase rows to work over a DTRI
at center instead of a sc (with an odd rather than an even DTRI count), but
as long as you maintain symmetry with your BIG-FAN placement it is OK. End
this section after a DTRI Row 1 with an odd number of DTRIs or a multiple
of 4 + 3 DTRIs if you want a center Feather in Section 3.

SECTION 3 – FEATHER AND BAR EDGING

Wherever the directions specify a tr, instead do a dc.
Do an extra ch at the underlined instructions (Rows 1 & 2 have ch3, Row 3
has ch4, Row 4 has ch5, Row 5 has ch6).
Instead of the DTRIs, work HTRIs = (hdc, ch2, hdc).
