What is a citizen? • A person born or “naturalized” in the United States is a citizen.
• The 14th amendment guarantees rights to citizens of this country.

Voting- 18 year old vote at polling places. They register to vote online or at the clerks
office. We vote because we are citizens and have a stake in our country. We vote in
elections every year at the federal, state, and local level.

Paying Taxes- You pay taxes once you apply for a job, get a car, or buy an item.
You pay taxes at the store, in your house, or in the mail. We pay taxes because the
government tries to keep public places like schools afloat. We pay taxes every
year.

Serving in Armed forces- 17 years old to serve in the armed forces. You may join
the military digitally and go to a processing station to get a physical exam. People
serve in the military because they fight for this country and our freedom.

Obey the law- You can be any age to obey the law but 18 years old is where you
get consequences for disobeying. We obey because we want to keep this country
safe for everyone. We obey the law everywhere, from your house to your job.

Attentive to public issues- You don’t just have to be a politician to care deeply
about issues within our country, you can be a middle class working man or anyone.
We do this because we want our country to be as equal and free for everyone and
we also want to keep ourselves out of trouble.

Holding political leaders accountable- You could be a teenager to hold political


leaders accountable of things. Standing up for your right is very important in this
country and questioning others is also highly important. We hold leaders
accountable as citizens when we protest for Black Lives Matter.

Serving as a juror – They are 18 years old and reside in the judicial district. They
stay there for one year. They must be very good in English to complete the form.
People serve as jurors because they want to be the ones who set the law straight
and hold justices upon people. They are usually in court deciding on who should
get convicted or not.
