DRIVEABILITY AND EMITIONS FUEL INJECTION( TB!) 6F—67 6F4.COMPONENT SYSTEMS 6F4-1. ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) AND SENSORS GENERAL DESCRIPTION ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE(ECM) The Electronic Control Module(ECM) lozated behind the passenger side kick pad, is the eéntrol center of the fuel injection system, It consiantly looks at the information from various sensors, and controls the system that affect vehicle performance. The ECM performs the diagnostic function of the system. It ean recognize operational problems, alert the driver through the “Service Engine Soon” light and store a code or codes which identify the pro: blem areas to aid the technician in making repairs, For service, the ECM has two parts: a Controller the ECM and a Mem-Cal(Memory-Calibration Unit), The Mem-Cal will provide memory and calibration for a specific car series. Se Electronic Control Module(ECM!) MEM-CAL To allow one model of ECM to be used for many different ears, a device called a Mem-Cal is used. The Mem-Cal is located inside the ECM, and contains program information tailored to the veh~ icle’s weight, engine, transmission, axle ratio, and several others, While one ECM part number can) be used by many car lines, a Mem-Cal is very specific and must be used for the right car. Tor this reason, iL is very important to check the latest paris book and Service Bulletin information for the correct part number when replacing a Mem-Cal An ECM used for service(called a controller) comics without a Mem-Cal. The Mem-Cal from the old ECM must be carefully removed and installed in the new ECM(see On-Car Service), Ba S&S =) Fig. 2 Mem Cat INFORMATION SENSORS. ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR 1. ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR 2, HARNESS CONNECTOR TO ECM Fig. 3 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Th coolant sensor is u thermistorta resistor which value based on temperature) mounted in the engine coolunt stream. Low coolant temperature produces at high resstance( 100.400 ohms at 40 ) while high temperature causes low resistance(7) ohms at 130°C ) The ECM supplies a S-voks signal to the coolant sensor thrn a fesistor inthe ECM and measures the voltage. ‘The voltage will be high when the engine is cold, and low when the engine is hot DRIVEABILITY AND ENITIONS FUEL INJECTION(TE!) measuring the voltage, the ECM knows the gine coolant temperature. Engine coolant temp- rature affects most systems the ECM controls. \ failure in the coolant sensor circuit should set ither a Code 14 or Code 15. Remember, these odes indicate a failure in the coolant temperature Teuit, So proper use of the chart will lead to either ‘pairing a wiring problem or replacing the sensor, > properly repair a problem. MAP SENSOR 12. map sinsox Fig. 4 MAP Sensor The Manifold Absolute Pressure(MAP) sensor measures the changes in the intake manifold py s-stire which result from engine load and specd changes, and converts this to a voltage output A closed throttle on engine coustdown would produce a relatively low MAP output, while a wvide-open throttle would produce high output This high output is produced because the pressure nside the manifold is the same ay outside the manifold. so you measure 100% of oueide air pressure. Manifold Absolute Pressure(MAP) is the OPPOSITE of what you would measure on vacuum gage. When manifold pressure is hig sucuum is fow. The MAP sensor is abo used measure barometric pressure under certain cond tions, which allows. the ECM to automatically adjust for different altituctes The ECM uses that MAP sensor to control {i delivery and ignition timi A failure in the MAP sensor circuit should set a Code 33 or Code 4. The FCM sends i S-volt reference signal to the MAP sensor. As the manifold pressure changes. the electrical resistance of the sensor also chang By monitoring the sensor output voltage. the ECM Knows the manifold pressure, A higher pressure low vacuum(high voltage) requires more fuel. while a lower pressure, higher yacuum(low volt uires less fuel MAT SENSOR 1. MAT SENSOR(TYPICAL) Fig. 5 MAT Sensor ‘The Manifold Air Temperature(MAT) Sensor. mounted in the air cleaner is a thermistor, a re- sistor which changes value based on temperature Low air temperature produces a high resistance (100,000ohms at—40), while high temperature nce(70 Ohms at 130) The ECM supplies a 5-volt signal to the MAT Sensor, through a resisior in the ECM, and mon- itors the voltage. The voltage will be high when the ait is cold and low when the air is hot. By monitoring the voltage, the ECM calculates the air temperature and adjusts fuel and spark advance. ‘A failure in the MAT circuit should set either a Code 23 of Code 25. Proper use of the code charts should lead to either repairing a wiring problem for replacing the sensor, THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR(TPS) The Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) is counveted to the throttle shaft on the TBE unit. It is a pote- ntiomeler which one end connected to $ volis trom the ECM and the other to ECM ground. A third wire is connected to the ECM which monitors the vollage from the TPS. As the throttle valve angle is changed(accelerator pedal moved). the output of the TPS also changes. Ata closed throttle position, the output of the TPS is below 1.25V As the throttle valve opens, the output increases So that, at wide-open throttle, the output voltige Fig. 6 Throttle Position Sensor shotild be epproximately 48 volts. By monitoring changes in the output voltage form the TPS, the ECM can determine fuel celivery based on throttle valve angel. A broken or loose TPS can cause intermittent burs—burst of fuel from, the injector. and on unstable idle, be cause idle, becausethe ECM thinks the throttle is moving. A problem in any of the TPS circuits will set either a Code 21 or 22. Once a Trouble Code is set, the ECM will use an artificial default value for TPS The TPS is not adjustable, The ECM uses the reading at idle for zero reading. so no adjustment PARK/NEUTRAL SWITCH (AUTO ONLY) Fig. 7 Park / Neutral Switch The Pack/Neutral(P/N) switch indicates to the ECM when the transmission is in Park or Neutral. This information is used for the TCC, and the IAC valve ‘operation. © important Vehicle should not be driven with Park/Neutral switch disconnected as idle quality will be affected and a possible false Code 24(VSS) A/C “ON™ SIGNAL This signal telly the ECM that the AIC selector and that the high side low pressure switch is closed. The ECM. uses this 10 turn on A/C and adjust the idle speed when the air conditioning is working. switeh is turned on VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR The ECM applics and monitors @ 12 volt signal Which connects to the Vehicle Speed Sensor and vely grounds this signal when drive wheels are turning. This pulsing action takes place 2683 times per F6km and the ECM will calculate vehicle speed based on the time between alter ulyes." ORIVEABILITY AND EMITIONS FUEL INJECTION TBI) 6F~69 pa 1 NA fy tes. Pulses from the sensor are sent to the ECM where the time between these pubes is measured to cal- ‘culate vehicle speed, The vehicle speed input is then used for idle air control and TCC lock up. DISTRIBUTOR REFERENCE SIGNAL The distributor sends a signal to the ECM to tell it both engine rpm and crank shaft position. See “EST System" for further information ECM PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS. Fig.8 Vehicle Speed Sensor To read the codes, ground the diagnostic terminal with the engine not running and the ignition on. The “Service Engine Soon” light will Mash Code 12 three times and then Mlash each code stored in memory three times. All codes stored in memory would have been read when Code 12 was flashed again, No new codes can be stored when in the Diagnostic Mede( diagnostics lead grounded). This eliminates confusion while the system is being worked on.
