New Ministry to Families a Great Way to Serve
Families in 2011 often have to overcome a greater variety of challenges than the families
of our parents and grandparents. As Larry Stafford, Cordova’s minister of outreach and
involvement puts it: “Our congregation is no longer made up mostly of couples who have
only been married one time, have 2.7 kids and a dog.”
Couples who have stepchildren through divorce and remarriage, single parents, young
marrieds, and other couples who are simply going through a rough patch in their relation-
ship often have particularly difficult problems that could benefit with help and support
from a “Family Ministry,” Larry observed.
That’s why Larry is looking for 20 to 24 people – young, middle-aged and older, that would
include longtime married couples, singles, and people of various ethnic backgrounds to
operate as support teams for members of the Cordova congregation.
Larry wants to reassure those who might doubt that they have the qualifications needed
for such a ministry. No special qualifications are necessary to become a part of this min-
istry, he said, because he will conduct about four months of training for the teams and
make sure everyone is comfortable with their role.
Included in the vision for the Family Ministry would be conferences on step-parenting,
marriage mentoring, pre-marital counseling, and coping with the difficulties of the single
life.
Larry has been a qualified marriage and family counselor for years. Every two years he
attends a refresher course conducted by the American Association of Christian Counselors
in Nashville, Tenn.
The counseling teams, which would be provided with ample training materials, would
train for this Family Ministry by meeting once a week in open forums, where they would
be walked through specific assignments. During the training, a leader for each team
would be assigned, and Larry would then simply become the team’s support person, he
said.
Joining this ministry would be a wonderful way to demonstrate the words of Colossians
3:12 which asks us to “clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness
and patience.”

Next Sunday, February 6, is Super Sunday Fun & Fellowship. Members
of our congregation have graciously opened their homes to you and
your family and friends.

The Art of Marriage Video Conference
Couples have the opportunity to look at their relationship in a whole
new way. The Art of Marriage is a two day video session event that
will help couples apply what the Bible teaches about marriage in a
powerful way. It’s practical, funny, and straight to the heart, weaving
instruction together with compelling stories, humorous vignettes,
man-on-the-street interviews and more, get ready to make a mas-
terpiece of your marriage. The Art of Marriage will be presented by
Parkway Church of Christ on February 11&12. The times are: Friday,
February 11 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 12 at 9 a.m. Registra-
tion is $60.00 per couple/$30.00 per individuals before January 25
or $75.00 per couple/$40.00 per individual thereafter. The cost will
include a lunch on Saturday and workshop manuals. February 4 is the

The Senior Saints will be meeting on Tuesday, February 8 at the
Roseville Church of Christ for their monthly meeting. The meeting will
begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a potluck luncheon.

The Senior Valentine Luncheon, hosted by the Preteen Ministry will
be Sunday, February 13 at 12:30 p.m. (immediately following second
service). This luncheon is for seniors, 65 years and older. If you would

A Special Thank You!
A special thank you to all who made donations and those who helped
with the Ladies Night Cheer event. Four families had a blessed Christ-
mas who otherwise would have received nothing. Fifteen kids and
five adults were very thankful, appreciative and stunned. They never
expected to receive so much. Each child received a new outfit and at
least one new toy. Each family was given a grocery gift card, frozen
meals and Christmas cookies. Thank you for being a light to these four
families lives, in a very dark time of their lives. God bless you all for

Background
There are rules to this game of life. In fact, people make up rules all
the time. Even within the church, we make up rules, too. As a child, I
remember listening to my father tell about a church member who was
very upset that a leader’s wife wore pants to church one Sunday morn-
ing. Proper women would never do that! In Japan, some Christians
have said that a real Christian would never sit cross-legged with the
sole of your foot facing another person!
While these rules originally are designed to help us show proper
respect to the people around us as we adhere to their cultural norms,
these rules become very problematic when one of two things hap-
pens; when culture changes and/or when we are trying to connect
with people who have different cultural norms.
Jesus demonstrates and teaches that we should never live a life that is
restricted by these rules, especially when we are trying to show love to
the world.
Questions:
Is There a Doctor in the House?
1. There are many people who put off going to the doctor. They
wait and wait. How do you decide when it is time to go to the doctor?
2. Read Mark 2:13-17. Spiritually speaking, what does it mean
to be sick? Are people only sick or healthy, or is there a scale in which
someone could be mainly healthy but somewhat spiritually sick? Dis-
cuss your thoughts.

3. How would you describe yourself? Are you spiritually sick, healthy, or
somewhere in between?
4. In the physical world, those who are around sick people on a regular
basis, like doctors and teachers, are very susceptible to infections and illnesses.
Could being around spiritually sick people make you sick, too?
Trump
1. Often in games, having a trump card mixes things up and adds a lot of
excitement. Think of one small and crazy idea to trump the social norms of your
work or home and bring a smile to the faces around you. Maybe it’s bringing
pizza in for your coworkers for lunch, or maybe making breakfast in bed for your
kids. Share your idea with your group.
2. Have you ever made one of those “I’ll never do that” kind of statements
only to have life put in a situation that trumps your original plan? Share your
experience.
God’s Trump
1. Often the things we do, the way we act, even the clothes we choose to
wear all have the rational of ‘pleasing God’ behind them. The Jews believed that
their Sabbath activities (or lack thereof ) were more for God than it was for them.
But Jesus disagreed (Mark 2:27). With that in mind, discuss the purpose of the
following items:
a. Worship, personal devotionals, acts of service, financial giving
2. Read Mark 3:1-6. This story does not imply that going to worship is an
evil thing, but it shows that it would be wrong not to help someone in need
regardless of the time or place. Have your responsibilities or perceived expecta-
tions prevented you from helping someone on a Sunday morning? Share your
story.
