COLLAPSE LOAD
LINE
The maximum collapse load.
COLLAPSE LOAD LINE

At the bottom of the drill pipe, not including the drill collar, the maximum collapse load
is found. Meaning that at 12,400 ft., the drill pipe experiences the most pressure.

● 0.052 x 12.0 lb/gal x 12 400 ft = 7, 737.6 psi

At 12, 400 ft., load line is calculated at 7, 737.6 psi.

02
DESIGN
LINE
The product of load line and design factor.
DESIGN LINE

The design line is calculated by the product of the load line and the design factor.
Design factor = 1.3; Load Line = 7 737.6 psi

● Design Line = Load Line x Design Factor

● Design Line = 7 737.6 psi x 1.3
● Design Line = 10 058.88 psi

Design line is calculated at 10 058.88 psi.

03
COLLAPSE
DESIGN
Graphical depiction of load line and design line.
COLLAPSE DESIGN
Because the Load Line and the Design line are already calculated, pipe selection can be
done. PIPE SELECTION IS FOUND AT THE APPENDIX.

● Grade E Pipe can be selected since its collapse pressure is 10, 392 psi which is
greater than the design line which is only at 10, 058.88 psi. Yet, it does not satisfy
the maximum allowable applied tension in STEP 9.
● Selecting Grade X Pipe, on the other hand, satisfies the collapse pressure and the
maximum allowable applied tension in STEP 9.

The next slide will show the graphical depiction of the load line, design line and collapse
