Self-Assessment Worksheet: Year 12 Film Opening Sequence Production

Please complete the worksheet by answering each of the following questions in full after
you have viewed the latest edit of your opening sequence.

Question 1: Which film genre is your opening sequence appropriate for? Is this the same
film genre that you intended to produce an opening sequence for? Explain.

We intended for our opening sequence genre to be a gangster film, we feel that we have a
produced a film of the gangster genre as we have recognised the conventions of a
gangster film and utilized our knowledge of these to try and challenge them to create a
new aspect to this genre.

Question 2: Which conventions of the genre do you think you have applied effectively,
why?
Our idea was to challenge the typical conventions of a gangster film but also use some to
keep it recognisable as a gangster film. One of the main conventions we stuck to was the
music, we chose an orchestral piece of music as many of the traditional gangster films we
researched had this as the opening sequence music. We also followed aspects of location
as we analysed English gangster films and found that many we set in suburbs of a city.

Question 3: Which conventions have you challenged? How have you done this?
Some of the conventions we challenged were character as we had the main character as a
woman not a man; also we had transitions in our piece which many of the films we
researched had no transitions.

Question 4: Who are the target audience? Do you think your opening sequence would
appeal to your target audience? Why?
Our target audience are people from mid teens to young adults, as the character is very
interesting as she is hard to read and also the film and the concept behind the film is quite
intricate and we feel this is what attracts our audience to watch these types of film.

Question 5: What do you need to improve about your opening sequence? Explain your
reasoning.
To improve our opening sequence we need to include production companies name at the
beginning of the piece and we also need to shorten it down as we are over the time limit by
about 10 seconds. Also we need to align the music to fade with the transitions.

Question 6: How long is your opening sequence precisely?

Our opening sequence is 2 minutes 16 seconds long.

Question 7: What has been your role in the production; from the initial idea to this point?
How have you fulfilled your role?
My role throughout the duration of producing our opening sequence has been camera
man, editing the piece e.g. tinting the shots, cutting down the footage, adding transitions
overlaying music and also editing the music to fade out with transitions

Question 8: How have you developed your skills in the use of technology? Give
examples.
I have developed my skills of using a camera as we each had to film some shots for our
opening sequence; also I have improved using the Mac to edit, by finding using different
aspects of editing such as the overlay of music, tinting shots and how to alter the music.

Please list three words to describe your opening sequence to someone who has not seen
it yet:
Suspicious
Suspense
Dramatic

Any other comments/observations/reflections at this stage:

There are no comments about mishaps and the team working badly, but all we need to do is trim
the footage time down to correspond to the allotted time.
