Learning Segment Topic: Celebrating YOU. Piecing together skills of poetry, short stories,
and artwork with the outcome of a zine that is all about you.

Length of each lesson: 50 minutes

Central Focus: Students will be taking a ten point quiz that includes all the vocabulary words
learned from this week. This will be used to measure how they have been paying attention
and understanding the vocabulary taught. Students will then have the ability to free write
when they are done with the quiz. Students will use one of the topics given in order to inspire
them.

Learning Standard: 9-10W4:


Create a poem, story, play, artwork, or other response to a text, author, theme or personal experience;
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a variety of techniques and genres. Explain divergences
from the original when appropriate.

Pre-Assessment: Students will have learned vocabulary throughout the week which includes
class definitions. They will be given a vocabulary sheet at the start of the week which they
can study off of.

Differentiation:
For ELL students: These students will be given worksheets with vocabulary in their native
language with the following translations.

For blind or visually impaired students: Students will be paired with a buddy to read aloud
to them and answer the questions with them.

Students with dyslexia: will also be given a buddy to help read aloud to them and answer the
questions with them.
For students with ADD/ADHD/students who learn kinesthetically: Students will be placed to
work at a standing desk area if needed so they will have a better opportunity to focus
standing without having feet movement.

Vocabulary:
Zine: is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images.
Repetition: An echo of words or sounds
Alliteration: the repetition of the first letter in a string of words
Smilie: A comparison between two things using the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor: a comparison that does not include the words “like” or “as”
Personification: Giving human qualities to animals or inanimate objects
Onomatopoeia: word that imitates sounds
Parallelism: using phrasing that is grammatically similar or identical in structure, sound,
meaning, or meter.
“I am” poetry : I Am Poems are all about a person. It is a way for people to introduce
themselves to others, with topics that might not come up in everyday conversation. The
author is able to share emotions and feelings, and imagination and senses. **We will also
come up with our own class definition.
Name Poetry: A name poem is a prescribed way for people to introduce themselves to others.
The author is able to share characteristics, thoughts, emotions, and dreams.
Self-Reflection: looking into a mirror and describing what you see. It is a way of assessing
yourself, your ways of working and how you study.

Procedure:
Anticipatory Set: 5 minutes
1. Collection of homework poetry assignments.
2. Morning check-in
a. What are your plans for the weekend?
b. Who is someone you admire? Could be a friend, family member, celebrity, etc..
Initial Phase: 25 minutes
1. Quiz on poetic devices
2. Hand in I am poem and Name poem
Concluding Phase: 10 minutes
2. Free write in journal on/or: PICK ONE
