Abstract Protozoa are responsible for the infectivity and negative impact on the life of the animals, most of these present a form resistant to environmental conditions, which allows them to survive the physical-chemical treatments of the water. It should be noted that these parasites give rise to various gastrointestinal processes, so it is important to identify them in order to avoid any type of condition. It is worth mentioning that the pathogens Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia sp. have demonstrated its infectivity and negative impact on the life of animals. In this way, public health measures can be implemented that allow the control and prevention of transmitted diseases. This work was carried out in order to determine the presence of free-living protozoa in water, since it is one of the most fundamental renewable resources due to its abundance, usefulness and wide distribution in nature, thus taking into account the different factors, which favor parasitism, a bibliographic review was carried out using scientific articles as reference in order to make an analysis about the influence of said protozoa on animals, taking as a source of transmission to water, therefore it represents a global health problem.
