MARKET BUZZ - FOOD THIS WEEK JANUARY 28 – FEBRUARY 03, 2011

1. AT HOME…

1.1 SNACK TIME

¾ GLAXOSMITHKLINE CONSUMER'S MARGINS IMPROVE DESPITE RISING INPUT COSTS

The current operating environment should ordinarily be a concern for food firm GlaxoSmithKline Consumer
Healthcare Ltd. (GSKCH), as the rising cost of farm inputs is affecting costs, while rising food inflation eats
into the consumer's shopping basket. GSKCH's December quarter results disclose some strain on the cost
front, but sales growth appears unaffected. The company, which sells malt drink brands such as Horlicks
and Boost, has extended the Horlicks brand to products such as nutritional bars and biscuits. Its instant
noodles' brand, too, appears to have done well, though the number of relatively new and large competitors
in this space should be a concern. ITC Ltd. is the latest to jump on to the noodles bandwagon.

¾ COLA WARS TO INTENSIFY WITH ENTRY OF BIG COLA

The cola wars will no longer be restricted to Coke and Pepsi, with their Latin American competitor

23. The plan, according to persons in the know, is to extend the reach of Big Cola in Maharashtra and
Gujarat before moving to other states. Ajegroup, which only last year stepped outside its home turf,
launching operations in Thailand, has a bottling unit in Patalganga, Maharashtra.

initially acquire 85 per cent of the equity capital in BFI and 100 per cent of BSD and then acquire the

¾ TATA GLOBAL HIT BY HIGHER TEA PRICES

Coffee saved the day for Tata Global Beverages Ltd. in the December quarter. That is unusual because it
contributes barely a quarter of the company’s consolidated revenue, with tea bringing up the rest, and a
minor portion coming from products such as mineral water. In the December quarter, Tata Global’s
consolidated revenue rose by just 4% to Rs1,608 crore, but by 8% after adjusting for the currency
translation effect. A large part of the company’s sales of tea is in overseas markets—across the US, Europe
and other markets which make it susceptible to foreign exchange volatility. But it was not just exchange
volatility that affected performance. In the Indian market, stiff competition from Hindustan Unilever Ltd.
(HUL) appears to have affected other tea marketers. Tata Global’s stand-alone sales rose by about 5%,
while HUL’s beverage sales (with tea contributing to 80%) rose by about 9%.

sweet and gives a refreshing feel. Besides, it boosts the immune system given the 'herbal' ingredients. The
institute has taken some three years to get the preparation ready. The scientists say they have done a local
market survey to gauge people's opinion about the drink. The technology is ready and institute might
transfer it to companies for marketing. There are few companies which have come shown interest but
scientists say they want the technology to go to the best of the companies.

¾ CONSUMERS SEE RED OVER HIKE IN MILK PRICES (BIHAR)

With the milk prices set to soar, consumers here have strongly opposed the move. Sudha milk, the brand of
COMPFED, and other diary associations have become more expensive with all milk variants to cost Rs1.50
more. Though COMPFED had hinted that it would hike milk prices in December itself, animal husbandry and
fisheries resources minister had assured that there would be no hike in the near future. However, taking a
U-turn the COMPFED announced a major hike in all the varieties, including other milk products like butter,
ghee and curd. The minister justified the move saying COMPFED, being an independent milk union, could
take any step on its own. The state government can only request for a modification of prices, which was
done in December. As per the revised rates, the one-litre packet of Sudha's "Full Cream" milk will now cost
Rs27.50 as against Rs26 per pouch, whereas the rate of its "standard milk" has been revised from Rs24 to

1.3 CONFECTIONARY

¾ CONFECTIONERY DEMAND SURGES ON RISING INCOMES

GDP per capita, US$ and Confectionery Sales (INR mn)

Source: Central Statistics Organisation, BMI

Sturdy economic growth, rising disposable incomes and the continued spread of mass grocery retail (MGR)
practices will all serve to drive impressive growth in the Indian confectionery sector. At present, per capita
food consumption in India remains at considerably low levels due to low disposable incomes and shopping
baskets are typically filled with food staples and daily essentials. However, over the next five years,
incomes are set to rise steadily, and we foresee an increasing number of higher-spending Indian consumers
loading up their shopping baskets with higher-value products such as chocolates and biscuits. For a
company that remains reliant on the weak US demand story for over half of its revenues, the attractive
growth prospects on offer here should provide a strong boost to PepsiCo's long-term revenues. While
PepsiCo has a clear EM-led agenda, the company's underperformance as compared to EM-focused soft drink
bottlers Coca-Cola Hellenic and Coca-Cola FEMSA suggests that PepsiCo's EM expansion is behind schedule

Information Center - Nielsen - India 12

MARKET BUZZ - FOOD THIS WEEK JANUARY 28 – FEBRUARY 03, 2011

and a deeper footprint in EMs is arguably necessary for stronger growth. A renewed push into the dynamic
Indian confectionery market should therefore move PepsiCo a step closer to achieving its EM ambitions.

1.4 SECTOR BRIEFS

¾ PREMIUM FOOD EXPORTS FALL ON RISING LOCAL DEMAND

Middle India's growing ability to indulge its palate is rapidly pushing up domestic demand for premium
foods, crimping exports of these quality products as traders find it more profitable to sell them in the home
market. The new-found Indian craze for 'export-quality' specialty teas and coffee, premium seafood, dry
fruit, spices and the famed long-grained basmati is posing a new challenge for the food industry that is now
looking at ways to meet the ever-increasing local demand. Prices of several products are equal to and in
certain cases more than what foreign consumers have to pay. And clearly, no one is complaining. Coffee
breaks for the Globalised Indian means beans sourced from a single-estate plantation crop. Yearly domestic
consumption of coffee rose to 94,400 tonne in 2008, even as exports fell by 20.09% to 2.04 lakh tonne in
2009-2010 compared to 2.45 lakh tonne in 1999-2000. And the cuppa that cheers is no longer brewed from
the crush, tear and curl variety. It is green tea, orange pekoe or a muscatel. While exports have not
remained flat, they are projected to grow at a slower pace. Outbound shipments grew by 28% during the
2007-08 to 2009-10 periods. Exports are predicted to grow by 15% by 2011-12. But domestic consumption is
likely to grow at 15% in the medium term.

¾ COFFEE ARITHMETIC LIKELY TO SEE A CHANGE IN INDIA

Coffee consumption India is likely to increase owing to the entry of global coffee retailers into India. These
global retailers will also help in popularising coffee among youngsters in non- traditional areas. Domestic
coffee consumption increased by eight percent to 1,02,000 tonnes in 2008-2009 (94,000 tonnes in 2007-
2008). The entry of private retailers such as Cafe Coffee Day, Italian Barista Lavazza and Costa Coffee has
increased coffee consumption in the last two decades. These retailers have about 1,250 outlets. The
domestic consumption is expected to reach 1,40,000-1,50,000 tonnes in the next five years.
