Re: School Library Media Program

Dear Dr. Brodie,

I want to first express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity you and the entire
administration team granted me to serve as the Media Specialist. Being an
educator, reflection is key. There is always room for growth. With that being
said, I recently evaluated the School Library Media Program of Moore
Elementary. To efficiently assess the program, I used the Judy Serritella
Exemplary Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric. The following are
the six categories included in the rubric: Student Achievement and Instruction;
Technology; Staffing; Facilities, Access, and Resources; Administrative
Support; and Staff Development. Out of the total 21 indicators, I discovered that
the Moore Media Center rated Basic in 3 indicators, Proficient in 12 indicators
and Exemplary in 6 indicators.

The media center is performing Proficient in most areas indicated, and even
Exemplary in other areas such as Facilities, Access, and Resources. However,
with a Basic rating in three of the twenty-one indicators, there is room for
growth/improvement. The areas of improvement are mostly in the category of
Student Achievement and Staffing. Due to COVID, the library has not been able
to host events and activities that appeal to a wide range of interests. However,
there are displays of books and reading material that supports recreational
reading. In reference to staffing, I am the sole representative of the Media
Center and I am required to perform a number of tasks that range outside of the
Media Center, on a daily basis. We lack a part-time/full-time paraprofessional
that would be able to assist teachers and scholars throughout each day. The
Moore Media Center does have flexible scheduling which gives teachers the
opportunity to collaborate with the Media Specialist. Students are also given the
opportunity to come to the Media Center with technology issues. The Media

Center exceeds the minimum square footage, making it large enough to
accommodate large and small groups. As the media specialist, I frequently
communicate with other media specialists and engage in district-level
professional development. I feel our Media Center embodies more glows than
grows, therefore, with a little finetuning we are on our way to being fully
proficient and even a few more exemplary indications.

Best Regards,

Action Plan:
Below you will find suggestions and ideas for implementation to
transition the status of the three areas Moore Elementary School
ranked as Basic.

Student Achievement and Instruction

Basic: Bulletin Boards and displays of books and reading materials

reflect different aspects of the curriculum, holidays, and community
interests to support recreational reading.

Due to COVID-19, the process and procedures of the Moore Media

Center have been modified to ensure safety. In order to improve our
status from Basic to Proficient, post COVID, the media center can host
events such as the Book Fair and other events that appeal to a wide-
range of interests.

Basic: The Library Media Specialist participates in collaborative

planning when initiated by the teacher.

In order to boost our ranking from Basic to Proficient, as the Media

Specialist I could encourage collaborative planning among teachers who
are teaching units on similar content. While searching the Georgia
Standards of Excellence website, I may observe Fourth Grade is on a
Point of View Unit in Reading. A teacher can ask me to pull resources
for this unit and collaborate with them during their planning times to
discuss additional resources.

Staffing

Basic: In compliance with the state board rule, but the Library Media
Specialist may be required to perform other duties on a daily frequent
basis.

Due to the lack of funding our school is provided, we do not have a full, nor
part-time library media paraprofessional. If we did, I do feel I would be able to
offer more programs and resources to our staff and scholars. Some duties that I
am tasked are time consuming and non- related to our library program.
However, being support staff, one must remain flexible. Although we do not
have funding for a paraprofessional, I feel we should invite volunteers to come
in the Media Center to assist with check-outs, poster making, and laminating.

Volunteers could include Mercer students and retired educators. This would
alleviate the Media Specialist getting behind on library tasks while being
responsible for other tasks within the school.
Administrative Support

Proficient: The library media program budget exceeds the minimum

state allocation. Local funding supplements state allocation.

Being placed on the School Improvement List last year, our school has
received a large sum of funding. There are so many resources I know our
Media Center would benefit from. However, the process of placing an
order is a real challenge. Our secretary is very busy, but also very
particular about the process she desires to place orders. To transition to
Exemplary, I feel we would benefit from having a team versus just one
person to make the final decision on orders. With a media advisory
committee and school and district administrators district administrators
in planning the media budget. Long-range strategic planning and
supplemental funding plans are made cooperatively, and can include
bond issues, grants, school fundraising, and business partnerships to
supplement the budget

I am submitting this memo in hopes that you will consider these

evaluation modifications in order to improve our standings from Basic to
Proficient and Proficient to Exemplary.
