Layer cages versus floor management

Maandeeq Poultry Farm

Current situation
1. The farm is situated outside from Hargeisa. There are 2 houses 60mx 11.5m houses and
five 80x 12m houses. The birds are livening and laying in floor production. The current
flock is by 30.000 birds.
2. The stock density with 9 birds/m2 is overcrowded on space. We can calculate with
around 20% floor eggs and 6% of eggs broken, picked or with handling damages.
The current layer performance is by 70%.
3. With the current 30.150 birds are 3 houses occupied. For this 3 houses is a rearing
house in need, means for 30.000 birds you need 4 houses on your farm.
4. The health from the birds cannot be controlled or exactly counted but if we take the
performance with 70%, we can resume that you are not making money.
5. The feed consumption with 4200kg/day and 30.150 birds calculated give a result of 140
gr. and bird per day.
6. The situation with the labor on the farm is with over 40 people a bio security problem
and out of control. This issue must be addressed immediately.
7. To increase the flock, you have to build more houses, more houses means more people,
more people means bigger problems in bio security and health from the birds.

Solution
1. Birds in cages are better to control on health, laying performance and feed
consumption. Per example, the disease call “Comboro” you have only on floor true
direct contact with their own manure.
2. In cages you will put 30.000 birds in one house, means you have to build only one house
more and the capacity of the farm will be by 180.000 birds in 6 houses lying and 2
houses with 60.000 birds in rearing.
3. The average laying performance will rise to 85% and the mortality rate in the rearing
houses will drop from 8-10% to 2%.
4. The health condition from the bird will be automatically better because less of people go
in direct contact to the birds. This will result of a better performance and less of drugs
will be wasted.
5. The feed wasting at the moment is a real disaster of costs and sources.
6. Losses on eggs and feed sources
The feed consumption with 140 gr. per bird and day is by far too much. You have losses
true feed spillages and because the birds are on floor, true movements. More
movement means more energy required. A normal layer hen requires a feed
consumption between 110-115gr. per day.
Your waste on feed and performance per year:
30.150x 20gr. X 365 = 220.000kg or 4.400 bags with an cost of a 50 kg bag =22$
96.000 $ loss on feed per year!
In the egg production side we have the same problem
30.150x 70% of performance = 7.700.000 eggs
30.150x 85% of performance = 9.350.000 eggs
Calculated per box and price you have a full loss over more then 200.000 $ per year.

Advice
If you like to remain in the egg production industry you have to change your cost structure,
performance, bird’s health and bio security standards.

1. Rearing
Build a good rearing house (best would be “dark out house”) with a fully controlled
environment for the best growing of the bird, or a semi controlled house with good
heating system and manual controlled curtains.
The existing house with 60x12 m can be easy converted and holding up to 30.000 birds.

2. Production in H frame
In a first step you put 30.000 bird places in the existing house 80x11.5m with manual
feed cart and manual egg collection true a service cart. The longitudinal manure should
be transported true manure belt to the end. Personally I think will be good to have the
cross conveyer for the manure.
In a second step you can convert the house in fully controlled environment and with
automatic feeding and egg collection.

3. Production in A frame
You will have the same benefice like in the H frame system but with a big challenge for
the manure management. The amount of birds will also only 50% related to H frame.
If you consider the cost of land, building and man power you come to the same
conclusion…. H frame is the only way for modern and efficient egg production for large
scale farmer.
