Howard High School

Matthew. Hanson

Course Description:
This course designed for visual arts teachers who are teaching entry and/or advanced level photography courses in a
high school setting, and can also be beneficial for teachers across all programs of study who are interested in incorpo-
rating digital camera technologies into their classroom and curriculum. Teachers will focus on information and skills to
facilitate the artistic development of students’ digital photography abilities that will create a strong foundation for up-
per level courses and the creation of a photography portfolio in preparation for the AP Studio Art: 2D Design Exam.
Teachers will develop proficiency with the operation of digital camera, composition, camera controls, exposure, lighting,
file management, visual journaling and basic image enhancement. Participants will learn the basics of Adobe Photo-
shop while manipulating digital images and how to structure lessons in such a way as to facilitate the development of
the beginning students’ abilities and confidence as they develop a digital photography portfolio. This course is based on

the Maryland Essential Learner Outcomes for the Visual Arts and National Arts Standards.
