BD VACUTAINER® SST TUBES
Creighton Medical Laboratories (CML) was recently notified by Becton Dickinson (BD) and Company
that some tests may be affected when a blood sample is collected in a plastic or glass BD Vacutainer
gel serum separator (SST) collection tube.  In response to earlier concerns, CML proactively
investigated and confirmed that our test methodologies do not produce the spurious results reported
by BD & Co.  

Following is a summary of our findings:

Total T3 
• No impact to patient care   
• Specimen requirement Red Top Tube with no gel additive
Procedure was reviewed in October 2003 due to reports from analyzer manufacturers that
variable test results with specimens collected in the BD serum separator tubes had been
noted.  After internal review at that time, a change to collection requirements was
implemented (see CML bulletin October 2003).  

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen 
• No impact to patient care   
• Specimen requirement Red Top Tube with no gel additive
Collection of patient sample in BD vacutainer gel serum separator collection tubes can cause
false positive results, but the methodology utilized by CML to confirm positive results is not
affected.  Therefore, we are confident that no incidents false positive patient results have been
reported.  As of October 1, 2004, CML has adjusted specimen collection requirements to a Red
Top Tube with no gel additive in order to eliminate this risk (see CML bulletin October 2004).

Total T4      Cortisol    &    FSH  
• No impact to patient care
• Test methodology not affected by gel serum separator collection tubes
• Specimen requirement SST tube

Folate   &  Vitamin B12  
• No impact to patient care
• Specimen requirement Red Top Tube with no gel additive November 12, 2004
