Background

Morrelgonj is the second largest upazila of Bagerhat Zila in respect of population

become a police station in 1849 and was upgraded to an upazila on the 7 th November ,
1982. It is learnt from the district gazetters that four English men named Robert More,
Thamas Morel William More came to the place and purchased the estate, then a dense
forest in 1849. The neighborhood was quicly converted from jungle into a prosperous
rice growing tract and on the banks of the Pnguchi River. Messrs Morrels established a
market and named it Morrelgani, 2.5 miles above the confluence of the Pnguchi River
with the Harianghata River. Like other upazilas of Bagerhat Zila the original inhsbitants
of this upazila are admixture of the non-Aryan, the Dravidin and the Mongolian races.

Area and Location

The upazila occupies an area of 1461.22 sq. km of which 1083.00 sq. km of forest area. It is
located between 22o20' and 22°37' north latitudes and between 89°42' and 89°58' east
longitudes. The upazila is bounded on the north by Kachua upazila, on the east by Pirojpur
Sadar upazila, on the South by Sarankhola upazila and on the west by Mongla and Rampal
upazilas.

Union, Mauza and Village Characteristics

The upazila consists of 16 unions, 9 Wards, 120 mauzas, 12 mahallahs and 181 villages. The
average population of each Paurashava, union, Ward, mauza, mahallah and village are
20490, 2413, 2713, 1810 and 1811 respectively.

Housing and Household Characteristics

In the upazia, there are 75472 households. Distribution of households by type shows
that there are 99.14% dwelling, 0.41% institutional and 0.45% others households.

Household Size

The average dwelling household size for the upazila is 4.6persons.For rural area the size

Housing condition of Morrelgonj upzila is predominantly kutcha. It is found in the table

that 23.31% dwelling households live in Jhupri, 73.28% households live in Kutcha houses,
2.50% households live in semi-pucka houses and the remaining 0.91% households live in
pucka houses in the upazila. Housing condition of urban area is slightly improved. In
urban area 3.73% households live in pucka, 7.56% households live in semi-pucka houses,
63.5% households live in Kutcha houses and 25.15% dwelling households live in Jhupri as
against 0.69% in pucka, 2.09% in semi-pucka, 74.06% in Kutcha and the remaining
23.16%live in Jhupri respectively in the rural area.

Source of Drinking Water

In Morrelgonj upazila, 29.10%dwelling households drink tube well water, 2.71% drink
tap water, 64.11% drink pond water, 2.02% deep tube well water and the
remaining 2.06% dwelling households drink water from other sources.

Sanitation

In the upazila 29.48% , of dwelling households have sanitary latrines with 30.57% in
rural area and 16.02% in urban area. A total 64.60% of the households have non-
sanitary latrines with 63.35% in rural area and 79.94% in u r b a n a r e a . I n t h i s
upzila, 5.92% of the households have no toilet facility.

Access to Electricity

All the 16 unions of the upazila have been brought under Rural Electrification Program.
However, a total of 13.85% of the dwelling households reported to have electricity
connection in the entire upazila.

Ownership of Agricultural Land

In Morrelgonj upazila 57.45% of the dwelling households own and 42.55% do not
own agriculture land. Percentage of households owning agriculture land is 39.78%
in urban area as against 58.89% in rural area.

Main Source of Household Income

In the upazila, 56.77% of the dwellings households depend on, agriculture as the
main source of household income with 32.60% on cropping, livestock, forestry and
fishery and 24.17% on selling agricultural labor. Other dwelling households reported earning
main incomes from non-agricultural labor 5.81%, b u s i n e s s 1 5 . 3 2 % , e m p l o y m e n t
8.10%, construction 1.22%, religious service 0.28%, rent and remittance
0.49%,Industry 0.55%,weaving 0.36%, transport and communication 2.13%, and others
8.97%. In urban area dwelling households having main incomes are from employment
16.13%, busin ess 37.04%, weaving 0.73%, cons tru ction 1.85 %, rent and
remittan ce 0. 67%,religio us serv ices 0. 27%, agricu lture 4 6.66%, industry 0.77%,
transport and communication 3.04%, non-agriculture labor 3.27%, and others 36.22%. The rural
dwelling households observed getting main incomes are from agriculture 59.63% of which
cropping, livestock, forestry and fishery 34.26%, agricultural labor 25.37%. Other sources are
non-agricultural labor 6.01%, business 13.55%, employment 7.44%, transport and
communication 2.05%, construction 1.17% , industry 0.53%, ren t an d remittanc e
0.48%,and others 9.14%.

Population Characteristics

In 2001 the upazila has a population of 349551 of which 178676 are males and
170875 are females. The sex ratio of the upazila is 104males per 100 females as
against 102males per 100 females in 1991.

Growth Rate

The decadal population growth rate is 8.84% and annual compound growth rate is
0.85%. The decadal growth rates over the last half century are shown i n T a b l e T 7 . 4

Economic Activity

In the upazila population below 10 years of age is 25. 22%. Among the population of
age 10 y ears and abov e those recorded no t w orking ar e 28.56%, look ing for
work 2.45%, doin g household work 36.34% and employed the remaining 32.65%. The
employed people identified working are in agriculture 19.23%, industry 0.29%, business
5.08%, services 0.65%, construction 0.55%, transport and communication 1.01% and others
5.84%.

Literacy and Education

Literacy: In Morrelgonj upazila, it is found that 62.30% population aged 7 years

and over is literate. Literacy rates by sex and locality of three consecutive censuses are
shown in Table T7.5 below:

The above table shows that the literacy rate of Morrelgonj upazila in 2001 is 62.3% for
both sex, 63.8% for male and 60.8% for female. Considerable increase in the literacy
rate is seen in the upazila over the last decade (1991-2001). Urban literacy rate is
68.9% for both sex, 70.9% for male and 66.7% for female which are considerably higher
as compared to the corresponding rates in rural area of 61.8% for both sex, 63.2% for
male and 60.3%female. The table shows an increase of 12.8, 9.9 and 15.8 percent
point in 2001 over 1991 for both sex, for male and for female respectively. In the
upazila, the literacy is the highest 79.77% in ward no-06and the lowest 53.93% in Morrelgonj
union.

In the upazila the school attendance at the age group 5 to 24 for made is 51.3% and for
female is 44.6%. In urban area the rate is higher 52.2% for male and 47.4% for female.
For rural area the rates is slightly lower i.e.51.2% for male and 44.4% for female.

Urbanization

Morrelgonj Paurashava is the only urban area of the upazila. It consists of only 9 Wards, 12
mahallahs and occupies an area of 13.23 sq. km. The main features are shown in Table T7.7
